Teenager Dayle Garlett will miss tomorrow's clash with Peel at Steel Blue Oval after sleeping in and failing to turn up for a compulsory recovery session last Sunday.
Garlett, 18, had kicked four goals when Swans came from 24 points down at half-time to beat Subiaco by 33 points at Medibank Stadium the previous day.
Touted as a top-10 pick at this year's draft, Garlett was one of three WA players named in the All-Australian team picked after this year's national under-18 titles.

Where's Jesse Lonergan likely to go? Would he be around for our second rounder maybe? He would seem a good prospect to develop into an inside midfielder from the sounds of things. Also has a mature body so could get games early in his career.

Yep, highlighted the need for a clearance player.
We nearly got Toby Greene who's a great clearance player, but got Docherty instead.
just need some speed, clearance around stoppages. Please Footy gods, give us someone good!!

Exactly what we need:

another reason to hate GWS

We were going to pick him up until GWS sniped us.

Is there any evidence that we would have picked up Greene anyway?

Emma Q seemed to indicate we were right into him. To be honest with the way he's played this year a 6-8 pick appears to be about the right range for him, so it was unlikely for him to last to 12. He would have been an excellent get, but long term I definitely still support the Longer pick.

A question for Quigley and co; how does Dayle Garlett compare to Harley Bennell in terms of talent at similar stages in their careers?

Harley Bennell won the Larke Medal in his draft year, went pick 2 despite issues over homesickness, defensive game and work rate when tagged. He was a star as a junior and a super prospect, offensively he was a star. Dayle Gartlett is not really at that same level, he is a good prospect but not at the same level offensively as Harley, yet they have similar issues imo. In saying that though Gartlett is a great prospect and likely top 15 draft pick.

From memory Suns announced Sexton as zone selection quite early last year and so he didn't actually attend draft combine (can't remember when they announced Allen but don't think he attended combine either - I think Yagmoor was only Qlder - remainder attended state screening). With letters apparently starting to arrive this week to those invited to combine or state screening, if Suns have decided on anyone already, might get a hint of their intentions if Cameron, Boston or Bourke's name is missing from list. Although, if general announcement is done like last year, AFL will release a few names every week so we won't see the full invite list until a week or two before the actual testing in early Oct even though players will all know this week! (and by then Suns may well have announced their intentions anyway). If they are all on the testing list presumably will suggest they haven't made any decisions.

Allen went to combine, got 2 top ten results.....so would definitely think Boston still under consideration from the suns but must have interest from about 5 other clubs which is good for him

If you wanted to compare Garlett to someone as a junior I would compare him to Cyril. Very very similar. If he falls to us because of off field issues I lick my lips and say thank you very much.

You might say that he is... a delicious prospect?

Apologies - looks like he did go and wasnt announced as suns zone pick till after that. Sexton announced earlier so didnt go. Rumours around that the expected 3 (Boston, Cameron and Bourke)definitely invited to combine, and maybe a couple of other Qld boys. And some to state combine, not clear how many yet. Hopefully the AFL release the lists a bit earlier this year.

With Suns like to be takingonly a few draft picks this year (as detailed previously in thread) will be interesting to see if Lions try to get any Qld boys pre draft by trading with the Suns as they did last year with Zorko

Is this draft still shaping up as the "Super draft" people were raving on about over the past few years? If so we should get a great player with our 1st pick if we dont trade it for either beams or tippett

It's coming to the conclusion that the hype was largely hype. Also, four of the best talents (O'Meara, Crouch, Daniher and Viney) are already locked up.

Wines v Garlett

Interesting decision. On talent Garlett is a long way in front. Wines is the better clearance player by a reasonable margin atm but Garlett has improved a lot in this regard this year. Garlett spreads better although Wines is not too bad in this regard himself. Skills wise and hurt factor are with Garlett by quite a bit. Similarly as a goal scoring threat Garlett is much better.

Wines has a more mature body and should be right to step into AFL football next year. Garlett will start off in the forward line and will move to the midfield as his engine improves. Both need to work on their tanks and I would probably not give an edge to either atm. Garlett has more speed and evasiveness whilst Wines has more strength. Both hold their feet well in the contest and have good awareness of what is happening around them.

As far as risks go the advantage has to be very firmly with Wines. He is much the safer bet with him not having the issues that saw Garlett booted from the AIS and seemingly in trouble a lot. With that said if I was picking between the two I would go with Garlett. I am a bit of a believer in talent winning out and the ceiling for Garlett is much higher I think. Get Garlett into a full time environment with a clean start away from the influences he has at home and we could have a midfield version of Cyril on our hands.

Wines v Greene

The comparison between Wines and Greene is not a terrible one especially the Greene we saw at the end of the year. Toby really worked on his body between the Champs and the Draft and was noticeably bigger and more developed. Greene was certainly the better runner and accumulator but the inside work of both is about the same level. On the outside Greene would have the advantage atm but I am confident that there is plenty of improvement there for Wines. Both lack a little in hurt factor but they do do reasonably well and winning the inside ball adds hurt factor on their own. Wines is probably a little ahead of where Greene was last year in the skills department. As a prospect I would rate Wines pretty similar to where I rated Greene last year.

Wardle is eligible this year (DOB 5/11/94) and he is a guy I took in the recent phantom. Realistically he is a rookie chance at best I think but he showed glimpses that he could be a player. He has nice size (188) and is just a really smooth mover who glides across the ground. His agility is also good. In one of the Qld wins early in the carnival (WA?) I remember him being one of the guys in the last who just stood up and imposed himself on the game. He has nice pace and attacked the ball carrier making some very nice tackles and causing turnovers. His skills were very nice and he set up some nice attacking moves. He had extended periods of invisibility which is the worry but when he is up and going you notice him. I think there is a fair bit of talent there and I would have no trouble at all taking a punt on him for a rookie spot.
