With Griffen re-signing I thought I'd start this thread back up for 2012 as I'm sure there will be a fair bit of action on this front over the coming weeks.
10 players still out of contract at years end. It will be interesting to see how it plays out
assuming Pearce gets upgraded, a possible free agent and 3 draft picks there may only be 5 more contracts given out.

2012
McPhee
Ibbotson
Crichton
Roberton
McPharlin
Faulks
van Berlo
Walters
Crowley
Grover

2013
Broughton
Anthony
Clarke
Mayne
Bradley
Mzungu
Pitt
Morabito
Johnson
Silvagni
Lower
Sheridan
Crozier
Forster
Sutcliffe
Michie

2014
Pavlich
Mundy
Duffield
Ballantyne
Sandilands
Barlow
Fyfe
Dawson
Suban
Griffin
de Boer
Neale
Mellington

2015
Hill

Rookies
Roberts
Spurr
Schloithe
Menegola
King
Pearce
Moeller

McPhee - Back to Vic
Ibbotson - Trade\Resign 1 year
Crichton - Trade\Resign 1 year
Roberton - Trade\Resign 1 year\Delist
McPharlin - Resign 1 year
Faulks - Resign 1 year
van Berlo - Delist - Works hard just not enough skill
Walters - Resign 1 year
Crowley - Resign 1 year
Grover - Retire

This is a super draft and we should have at least 4 picks, although getting a pick in the mini draft would make 3 ok.

I would rather delist Anthony than Crichton who has at least showed something at AFL level. Roberton may be delisted just to make room.

Which players do you think will be traded out?

Who should we delist?

I think we need at least 5 empty spots on the list but should have 6 assuming we are targeting PSD\Free agency.

My 6 players are
Grover
van Berlo
Anthony
McPhee
Ibbotson(Trade)
Roberton(Trade\Delist) or keep Pearce on the rookie list.

2012
McPhee - ?
Ibbotson - Re-sign
Crichton - ?
Roberton - ?
McPharlin - Re-sign (2 years)
Faulks - ?
van Berlo - De-list
Walters - Re-sign
Crowley - Re-Sign
Grover - Retire

McPhee I'm not overly fussed with. If he stays, I'm fine with it. If he leaves, I'm also fine with it. Crowley I would consider moving on if the club is desperate for additional picks.

Crichton, Faulks, Roberton and Walters have the remainder of 2012 to show what they've got. I would certainly be re-signing Walters though. It's strange that it's likely we will be de-listing a couple of promising young kids that have played senior AFL footy - including some finals - whereas Michie already has a contract.

Rookies - I'm unsure how long these guys are contracted...
Roberts - De-list - Too injured, too often.
Spurr - Retain
Schloithe - Retain
Menegola - Retain
King - Retain
Pearce - Upgrade
Moller - Retain

That leaves us with 3 rookie selections (Grover is no longer taking up a spot) and 3-4 national draft selections.

2012

McPhee - I think we would offer a one year deal, from the talk of him saying he'll do what's best for his family, I would anticipate he would ask for and get a two year deal elsewhere.
Ibbotson - Wouldn't expect we'd delist Ibbo, I reckon he'll probably be 'available' for trade without being offered around but will probably get a new deal if not moved on.
Crichton - I wouldnt anticipate we'd get anything of value for him so I expect we will probably re-sign him for another year as Rosco seems to like him for depth, if not to see if he's got another gear.
Roberton - I reckon we'll re-sign Roberton for another two years - I'd be happier if it was one.
McPharlin - McPharlin probably deserves a two-year deal but I expect we will offer him one and he will take it.
Faulks - Re-sign if we are unable to procure better depth for our backline, otherwise de-list.
van Berlo - No brainer. Delist.
Walters - Two year deal should be on the table.
Crowley - Crowls has shown a bit this year and should get another year - I suspect he may be in the same boat as McPhee as wanting to 'cash in' on potentially his last contract so may look elsewhere for a longer-term deal.
Grover - Retire
I would expect one or both of McPhee or Crowley to go, with Van Berlo and Grover going that would open up 3-4 spots on our list.
Anthony is on extremely thin ice but not sure the club will de-list - surely he will be offered up for trade. I think Duffield will definitely be offered up for trade (be interesting to see who is interested), and wouldnt be surprised to see Broughton's name thrown around as well.

Is there a provision for us to delist Mora and then re-rookie him to open up a spot on the main list? Also I'm not sure but is anyone eligible as a veteran when Grover retires?

Rookies -

Roberts - De-list
Spurr - Upgrade if a spot's available
Schloithe - Retain
Menegola - Retain
King - Retain
Pearce - Upgrade if a spot's available
Moller - Trade

I assume Luke will be able to paid partially under the new veterans scheme which will make it easier. I wouldn't think our deals with Pav and Sandy would exclude us.

Sandilands is eligible for the Veterans list, so I would imagine you would want anyone else on it.(With Pav already on it).

There Salaries are going to be larger than anyone else eligible.

I think we have to delist at least 5 players, and there are only 3 easy candidates which means our list is starting to look good.

Van Berlo must go, Grover should retire and McPhee will more than likely leave. The other three will be harder but

Pearce takes one spot, which only leaves four players to draft or 3 and one PSD\Free Agent.

Bond and Lloyd have already shown there potential to find Gem's like Neale and we cant prevent them from doing this for players like Roberton or Ibbotson.

Moller takes up a spot on the rookie list leaving only one rookie spot.

I think this may be the first year in about 5-6 years we dont have 4-5 candidate to delist :)

I wonder if we will look to trade a contracted player to Gold Coast for Charlie Dixon. If a Melbourne club can pull him away, why not a Perth one?

He is a year younger than Clarke, bigger bodied and listed as a forward. Do you think we could fill a hole there while releasing Clarke into the ruck?

GTD there is new veterans payment scheme which comes into play next year.
we've got a handful eligible for the vets list too, which has changed to 100K of a vet's salary can be paid outside of the cap (rather than 50% for a 30+y.o player who'd been at the club 10+ years). they don't have to be 30 with the new rules, just at the club for 10 years. guys like MJ, mundy, pav, sandi, mcpharlin, crowley and groves will be eligible, meaning if they call kick on next year, 700K outside of the cap can go to their salary.

incidentally, we'd have more if the recruiting in the early 2000s wasn't so shithouse and meant we had to recruit mature agers later on.

Why does everyone think Mcphee is going??
I realize he's older, but he's one of our more important players through his hardness at the ball and man.
Who ever reckons crowley should go....for crying out loud!

Fair enough comments, but I don't see you proposing a list of 4-5 players to delist as an alternative. There are 10 un-contracted players. Minus those 2 = 8. MacPharlin a certainty to get a contract, and strangely, Walters probably is also. I think Roberton will get another contract as well.

And posters suggesting trades for players such as Ibbotson may have a difficult time using the picks we would actually get for them. At best I think we would get minor upgrades on picks. We certainly won't jag a 2nd rounder. Maybe a club like Port may take him and our 3rd rounder for their 3rd rounder type of deal.

If we get an free agent, plus national draft three picks, and upgrade Pearce and Spurr , therefore we need to move on 6 players off the main list.

McPhee - he will be moving back to Victoria for family reasons
Ibbotson - sign him up for 2 years on an average wage
Crichton - sign him up for 1 year on a minimum wage
Roberton - sign him up for 2 years on an average wage
McPharlin - sign him up for 1 year at a time
Faulks - delist
van Berlo - delist
Walters - sign him up for 2 years with a small retainer with performanced bonus with a cause on his fitness.
Crowley - sign him up for 2 years on an average wage with performace bonses
Grover - retire
Anthoney - delist
Michie - move him to the rookie list.

Roberts - delist
Spurr - upgrade
Schloithe - keep
Menegola - keep
King - keep
Pearce - upgrade

I'd prefer to keep Spurr on the rookie list and go with another pick in the main draft.

And I am not sure that delisting Grover (who wants another year), Faulks and Anthony makes sense. None of them are best 22, but they are all mature players who add depth. Would make us very thin for tall defender depth and I would like us to keep at least 1 of them, and to be honest it would be a raffle as to who that is, but Anthony is contracted.

I think Crowley would be one to look at if we need the space on the list. He is definitely playing well and worthy of keeping. But we also have a number of players who could play midfield. Neale, Sutcliffe, and Sheriden look like they can push for best 22 status sooner rather than later, Walters transformation has given us more flexibility, Crozier has shown heaps of potential.

They may not be able to shutdown as well as Crowley, but de Boer, Suban, Pearce and even Spurr sit in a similar place to him in my opinion if Lyon needs them to. And we also have players like Mitchie, Melligton and Crighton who do not have locked in roles for us at this point in time.

Apart from de Boer and I guess Pearce, none of those players are currently assured best 22. I am pretty sure a few them will be over the next 2 years though.

McPhee - Trade/Delist
Ibbotson - Trade/Delist
Crichton - Trade/Delist
Roberton - 1 year extension (starting to show good signs)
McPharlin - Give him whatever he wants
Faulks - 1-2 year extension (KPD depth)
van Berlo - Trade/Delist
Walters - 1 year extension (treat him mean, keep him keen)
Crowley - 1 year extension
Grover - Retire

That gives us 4 outs allowing for 1 FA/RFA and 3 draft picks.

And no rookie upgrades. Do we have to upgrade Pearce or can he go around for another year on the rookie list? Surely we would upgrade him if that is the case, which would leave us with only 2 selections in the draft, which would be disappointing.

If our 3rd rounder + eg Ibbotson/Suban could get us a pick upgrade I would take it.

Would rather McPhee, Ibbotson or Crichton on the list ahead of Suban. That is a pretty sad call to have to make, but if it came down to that I would make it.

@gav I forgot about rookie upgrade. Pearce was re-drafted to rookie list last draft (from memory) so we can keep him there for another 2 seasons but he has definitely earned a spot on the senior list.

Its a tough call but I agree that Suban is behind McPhee and Ibbo (I cant agree about Crichton) but I was only using the players that have contracts expiring this season. Suban is still contracted for 2 more seasons.

Yeah them peskie rookie upgrades. If Pearce is the designated rookie then it really won't impact his opportunities or salary I would think. Perhaps he would be ok with staying there. In the end I am going cool on the idea of the FA pickups, and would be happy with 4 picks in the draft, and/or going hard for the GWS U17 pick to snare Martin or Hogan.

Suban contracted until 2014 could come back to bite us if he doesn't start showing some improvement soon.

I think we will probably try to move on a player that is number 15 to 25 on our list looking mainly for a mini draft pick and upgrades on our current picks.

I can see an offer of moeller and silvani (and probably 2nd round pick)for a mini drAft pick.
Then people like Ibbo, duffield, broughton, son son, Kepler, faulks, spurr, lower, Pearce, Clarke, mzungu, Anthony, roberton, Suban will be on the trade table in order to get a player like gumby or wellingham or get picks or upgrade picks.

I myself wouldnt want to trade away players like Clarke, son son, robbo or Pearce but I feel that they might get shopped around if the price was right.

Our trade week will decide the futures of players like McPhee , Grover, chrichton, mitchie, Pitt, Anthony, faulks

Vb is gone
