Football: Nice start to the season with thanks to the AFL with reigning premiers Geelong set to travel to Patersons Stadium. The good news thereafter is that Freo doesn't see the Cats again and of the 2011 finalists, the only team Fremantle will face twice is Carlton outside of regular Derby rivals West Coast. Freo plays five games in Victoria - two at the MCG and three at Etihad Stadium and returns to Aurora Stadium for the first time since former coach Mark Harvey sent a second-string team there in 2010 and lost by 116 points to Hawthorn. It is also Freo's turn to finish the home and away season at home, so the round 23 match will be against Melbourne at Patersons Stadium.

Business: Two Friday night games for Freo with the home game against Carlton in round five the traditional Len Hall Anzac Day commemoration. Geelong, Carlton and Essendon are three Victorian clubs with strong followings in Perth and who each are drawn to play Freo at Patersons Stadium. As per a request from the club, Freo will host the second Western derby for the year against West Coast.

Big game: Clearly, it will be the round four Friday night game at Etihad Stadium that will pit Fremantle coach Ross Lyon against his former club St Kilda for the first time.

The 6 day break into Tassie isn't ideal, but all in all I reckon we've done fairly well. Obviously a couple of extra games against the expansion teams would have been nice.

Get your September flights booked, here we come!

Seriously, pretty good draw, looks like not many night games which I prefer but the teams we have twice should help us eke out enough wins for a spot in te 8 - injuries permitting!

Melbourne is going to be the big improver in my opinion; Mark Neeld, Dave Misson, Neil Craig, Mitch Clark etc. Tough coming across them twice. Richmond also have a habit of beating us no matter what form they are in.

Though i guess you can't complain, we only play against another finalist twice in West Coast.

Prefer to play Melbourne twice than Geelong.

Hilarious, the AFL can't even bother publishing an accurate article about our fixture.

I was under the impression that games in South A would be played @ Adelaide Oval. Anyone have any info?

The AFL is creating a fixture which will have a log jam in the middle of the ladder. Our draw may appear 'easy', but look at North Melbourne, or Adelaide.

West Coast got a ridiculously hard draw. Same with Collingwood and Hawthorn.

I think there will be some massive changes to the top 8 this year.

The general impression of most teams is they got lucky. In essence the goal posts have shifted, getting to play 3x finalists twice is a loss. Getting them twice is drawing even or a slight win.

We have come out ahead nicely with only 1x finalists. Though of the bottom 8 i expect Melbourne to rise from the ashes. They are the toughest bottom 8 competition bar ourselves. In actual fact it becomes a bottom 10 now.

i love the look at that draw,it's about time they gave us a good one. i'll be heading down to the tab to put a $100 on a top 4 finish for sure. bring on 2012

Well I've had a look and despite a couple of bewildering fixtures, I'm reasonably happy

Melb, WC, Adel, Rich and Port twice is not too bad at all

The opening 5 rounds are pretty tough (Geel, Syd @ Syd, Bris, St Kilda @ Scum Stadium, Carlton) but after that the fixture isn't too bad

Only bewilderment I have is a couple of starting times

1:45 on a Sat vs Collingwood (no guarantees of making it out safely)
1:45 on a Sat vs Melbourne (no chance of a big crowd)
3:15 on a Sun vs North (level 3 to be closed)

Overall though, yeah, not too upset really.

Enuf of the use of ther term easy please. Its a jinx waiting to happen. Of the teams outside the eight last year, we lost to Richmond, Melbourne, North and WB when many of us would have pencilled most of them in as certs this time 12 months ago.

You can't jinx a thing.

Reasonably happy with the draw... probably the best we've had for many years.

So many variables tho' including injuries , the game plan under RL, teams from the 8 who will improve etc.

I shall refrain from any wild predictions re finals just yet, but would be massively disappointed if we did't get there.

Very happy with the draw, not playing Pies, Geelong, Hawks etc twice is gold. Round 15-Round 23 is a dream run into the finals.
Happy to have the break mid season.
We also have a fair travel draw.

Where do I sign?
