2013 Draft Discussion

Just a quick question for the draft boffins out there. How's our academy lads shaping up so far this year, specifically Conway, Tckner and Freeman (understandably its early doors)? Especially interested in Freeeman as haven't heard much on him compared to Conway and Tickner.

Depending on how we finish the year is it likely we nominate all three, especially given our more mature talks haven't really set the world alight so far (hence both Freeman & Tickner).

Been watching all Academy players with interest. Both Conway and Tickner are very hard at it. Tickner has had a run of injuries lately but can be aggressive when needed. Freeman on the other hand can take a good grab and is a reasonably good kick but doesn't use his size to advantage. He should be crashing packs but seems to be light on when 2nd efforts are required. Does have plenty of skill though. I would place Tickner and Conway a fair bit ahead of Freeman at this stage. Rutledge is another one to keep an eye on.

Freeman was impressive against Vic Metro, taking 5 marks and kicking 3 goals. He's a big unit too, will be keeping a close eye on him.

Any SA boys on here seen much of matt schraneberg, Could he really play as a on baller, I had him more pegged as defender in the sam gilbert mould.

I wonder how people would feel if we ended up going into the draft with all of our picks pre-allocated to academy f/s equivalents and rookie upgrades.... ie we already know all the names that are going to be read out from our end....

From what I've heard Conway and Tickner are 2nd round picks. If they play well enough for a club to nominate them I have no problem in taking them. If they are a top ten picks we might have to take them with top ten picks.

What do you mean? If he's worthy of a top 5 pick, other clubs will be stupid to not bid for him. I don't understand why 'shit's going to hit the fan'.

I'll take him at pick 2 if a club nominates pick 1 it clearly indicates he is a quality player.

Quite relaxed - just that if we had such a great academy mob that all our pick were taken I would happily trade that for the excitement of wondering who we would pick on draft night - 'though I suspect others would be annoyed that their night was spoiled ....

They might be ranked higher than our second round pick - it really depends on how high a pick we have and how good a championships they have.

Yeah, and even if they are ranked as an early second round pick doesn't mean another club will definitely bid with an early second rounder. The early second round is often full of highly rated sliders (Jack Darling for example) and I reckon most clubs would rather go into draft day with those picks in hand.

I've seen a fair bit of him. He will end up as a midfielder from day one IMO.

As it stands, I have him placed as a mid-late third round pick. With a few more impressive showings in the Champs, his rankings could shoot up.


With people talking about Tickner and Conway, I think Tickner is worthy of a second round pick. Conway on the other hand is someone I don't rate as highly. I have him more of a 3rd-4th round chance.

Beats my guess of Nick Riewoldt (and now kicking myself sideways over missing Jared Brennan!). But that is the type of timeframe we're talking about - none in the last ten years.

The way the academies are set up they really could 'hide' players. Will be interesting to see where other clubs rank them but any club that has an academy could make an agreement to take player x and get them to take it easy for the year.

Hourigan is certainly a top 10 chance, more so if he keeps impressing. But I would rather us try pick up a decent KPF in the trade period and grab guys like Tickner and Freeman.

I don't think you quite understand how the academy selections or the draft for that matter work.
