What's the difference between Dustin Martin off field issue and Garletts?

Martin didn't put what he was doing out on social media.

Although I'm not sure how recruiters view WA talent being drafted to a Victorian club over Victorian talent being drafted to a Victorian club.

Yeah but is he what we desperately lack ATM? we have outside type mids We need to improve our inside clearance work..... Or do we just take the best player available.

He's not big, but he is fast and can be that inside receiver breaking outside or an outside receiver. Once the ball is pushed loose from a pack he would ordinarily be the first one to scoop it up.

Our outside mids aren't like him, he's like Josh Green but with a bigger kick and more agility and better overhead (very similar in footy smarts).

If we drafted him it would be as a small forward for the first year or so which could push Josh Green who is an inside mid further up the field. This would give our midfield more speed around the stoppages. Along with drafting Conway I think this puts a band aid over our inside ball winning ability for a little while, although we may need to add another one either later in the draft or the year after.

Again, there isn't anyone on our list like this guy (Ash McGrath maybe but a much younger and slimmer Ash), I think he'll add to any team that drafts him and the potential is there.

I'd love him to come over and get physical with the opposition.

I don't want us to try any of those tactics, Bert. I suspect the league would frown upon it.

Wouldn't mind if he came across and played quite aggressively against the opposition though ;)

Should have phrased it better, but yes a hard and fearless body would be great.

I think he is an upgrade on Wines.

Sadly I think Dunstan will go top two.

Above the inevitable Aish and Boyd combo?

Dunstan struck me as the type that tends to slide - that Rich/Wines/etc ready-made player that slips a bit because they don't have the "potential". He'd only need to slip to pick 5 or so. :(

I think Aish is a real chance to slide down to pick 3-5.

Dunstan gets on the scoreboard, has good speed and superb skills by hand and foot. Overall, If him and Wines were available in the same draft, I'd take Dunstan comfortably.

I am not entirely convinced at this stage about Boyd as the number 1 pick, Aish is probably still right up there but so too are Scharenberg and Dunstan, with Josh Kelly, Matt Crouch and Dom Sheed not too far off. Where Boyd fits in I am not entirely sure just yet. There is no doubt he is a talented forward and a massive unit, but for mine he is not on the same level as Jonathan Patton from 2 years ago. Boyd plays a fair bit as a lead up forward and has a solid burst of speed, I feel that his contested marking is decent without being spectacular and he relies a lot on his height which he uses to great effect especially on the lead. Not many young defenders can go with him and have his height, which slightly skews his numbers. In saying that you don't kick 5 goals a game by fluke so he is definitely a top prospect. The only thing is will he end up as a Chris Dawes type player or become an elite full forward in the Tom Hawkins mold.

Ok, I'll run through his performances this year (today is the first I've seen) then I'll get to analyzing the game and his game.

Game 1 - Didn't play for some reason?
Game 2 - Same again.
Game 3 - Swan: 14. 17. 101 to Perth 15. 13. 103 - Garlett 2.2 - 13D - 2M - 1T
Game 4 - Swan: 15. 12. 102 to South Freo 12. 9. 81 - Garlett 0.0 - 22D - 9M - 2T
Game 5 - Swan: 12. 12. 84 to Peel 15. 8. 98 - Garlett 2.1 - 16D - 2M - 1T
Game 6 - Swan: 15. 8. 98 to West Perth 9. 16. 70 - Garlett 2.1 - 29D - 13M - 4T
Game 7 - Swan: 11. 17. 83 to East Perth 15. 13. 103 - Garlett 2.2 - 27D - 11M - 2T
Game 8 - Swan: 10. 12. 72 to Subiaco 12. 13. 85 - Garlett 4.1 - 16D - 5M - 0T
Game 9 (TODAY) Swan: 16. 8 104 to Perth 15. 10 100 - Garlett 6.2 - 23D - 8M - 0T

Quite a high quality game with a few ex-AFL and currently listed players. Tony Notte, Brennan Stack, Paul Bevan, Kyle Reimers etc. Swan fought back hard and sealed the game really well. The last quarter was desperate and intense, and the skill level shone through with both teams.

On to Garlett. He was heavily tagged by Perth, when he was playing from the goal line he had one behind him close scragging him and one in front and even with that level of attention he was able to get free and have a few shots on goal. In the first he ran out on a fast lead and snapped without looking on the left and it was never going to miss. He pushed up to half forward then into the centre halfway through the second. He was really noticeable in the centre bounce, read it well and got to the position of inside-breaking outside runner, only his man inside fumbled and missed him. He knew where to go and got space easily even with the attention.

He bobbed up as a get out kick in the back half and didn't disappoint with his disposal from there, he would either hit it flat and hard to he player or place it so they could run onto it. Really creative stuff from him too, with one of his kicks out in from of a man on the wing who moved it forward quickly and it resulted in a badly needed goal.

He knows where to run to get space in the middle or on either flank. He is smart with his disposal and loves to kick. A good mark of the ball where he reads the ball in flight exceptionally well.

Having read all of the "he's a dickhead and doesn't care about footy at all" it was clear to see that he really wanted to be there and to work for his team mates. He was focused which I didn't think would be the case when you have two men on you scragging you at every opportunity. On field he was upbeat, bringing team mates into the game and was listening to, and wanting to do what his coach was telling him. In saying this, I'm only reading him on what I saw today.

His crumbing was first rate and really reminded me of the way Betts or the other Garlett just know where the goals are and snap without looking. His speed when going for the ball, the clean pick up are just traits you see in those two and him. I think one of the Perth defenders was in awe of him on one occasion, just looked shocked when he snapped truly, as was the crowd.

His tank was ok, he ran hard when he needed to and his defensive running was quite good but if he is going to the AFL that is something they will work on. He ran out the 4 quarters, although a bit of each quarter he was sitting in the forward 50 having a bit of a rest. He ran out the last quarter really well setting up and creating with his disposal. Perth thought the best way to expose him in the last was to run off him but he was wise to it and did what he had to.

After the Swans hit the front right near the end of the game he was one out in forward 50 because the Swans flooded the Perth forward line. Swans got the ball out of congestion in their back flank and kicked as far wide as they could and Garlett lit up, he burned off two guys with one only able to stay with him and try to body him, he kept either tapping the ball to his advantage or taking possession and hand balling in front of him to keep it alive and wearing the attention of the defender. He gathered the ball on the boundary line and on the wrong side for a left footy he shot and it faded for a point. It would've been something you'd see from the rarest of footballers in the AFL.

A really good day for his side and for him - a come from behind win and 6 goals with 23 disposals rotating to most parts of the ground.

If drafted I think he'd start as a small forward but he wouldn't stay there too long once his engine is managed and increased. If his off field issues are quieter then I see no reason not to draft him. He was the best player on the ground (although Bevan was a close 2nd).

Again, it was amazing that he broke the tag and the constant attention. If you were looking for someone with A-Grader potential then I think he could be your man.

A lot of water to go under the bridge from here to then but from what I read from him today I think he is well worth getting him into the system...and I hope we get him.

If you guys have any questions please let me know, I'm happy to answer them.

Yeah I saw that, I was just surprised he was relegated to the seconds. I assume there was some issues as to why he wasn't playing.
