On this Forrester chap, what's the procedure? Is it a Lachlan Keeffe situation where a team would put him straight on their list without going through the draft?

Yup, I believe so. Same as Hunt and Folau.

Personally I rate Boyd as a better prospect than Patton. I think there is little doubt that Boyd will go at 1 when all is said and done.
If GWS finish bottom what would we need to do to get our hands on pick 1? Would Karnezis to a Melbourne club and Polec to Adelaide in return for two experienced players to GWS have any chance? Maybe our first round pick as well.

That's trade talk my friend. Probably best to raise it in the applicable thread.

just watched a video of Forrester playing league. The kid has some pace and a massive don't argue, a fast moving tank by the look of him. Just what our list needs now and in a couple of years.

Also, am i correct in thinking like Hunt and Izzy the AFL would contribute to his wage outside the salary cap?

their wages outside salary cap were for marketing purposes etc this would be a different situation

I just thought I vaguely remembered the AFL offering the same deal to everyone, which is partly why Essendon got super keen on Inglis. May just be my shoddy memory though.

I might be wrong but my understanding is its for high profile recruits for marketing rather than just any code hopper, it would be like a myke pike like situation id say

He may qualify under the alternative talent program, as Wallace (North Melbourne), Richmond (Collingwood) and Dowdell (Adelaide) did. In that case we could just pop him on the rookie list outside of the standard rookie scenario. Not 100% sure but I think they become similar to zone selections, in that they get added on top of your other rookie selections in the rookie draft. Like an international such as McKeever, you have already signed them and no one else can.

It still becomes a game of list spots though, there are clear rules about how many and of what type of rookie we can have. Others will be able to articulate this point more clearly than I have no doubt.

Apologies, it is late and i have just smashed an essay. I hope it reads more fluently than thiso_O

^Makes sense fine HH :thumbsu:

If he's not asking for too much money, I'd definitely be up for putting him on the list for a year to see how he goes. Seems like a real prospect and obviously knows how to play footy at a high level. My only concern would be if he's fair dinkum about wanting to play in the AFL - it seems a little odd, perhaps at 20 he feels like he should be playing seniors for the Broncos and isn't too pleased?

yeah broncos have some good depth in the outside backs and second rowers department which is the position his size and attributes fit in for mostly and he doesn't see himself cracking a spot their so might want to have a crack in the afl

These two are 100% correct. ;) We can sign him directly assuming he hasn't been registered with an AFL club in the last three years. We can then put him directly on to our rookie list at the end of the year without him nominating for the draft. We won't get any special top-ups from the AFL, as that was purely for high profile converts from other elite codes.

I read the Forrester article yesterday and it raised queries for me. We've got a 20yo who left his original club due to homesickness and is now talking about now leaving the club that presumably gave him the chance to return home. If it wasn't for the fact that (a) he is talking about switching codes, and (b) our club was named as one that was interested, then this would actually be looking more like a tale of a bloke who has achieved nothing and has shown little loyalty or capacity to work through adversity.

That's obviously on the basis of one crappy Sunday paper article so is really unfair to judge him on this. But I'd want to be very clear on his motivations.

would we consider grabbing someone like peter yagmoor, reading collingwoods board it seems like he is on his way out (delisting) end of the year, I understand he played as a top up player for our reserves a few times was he just not rated by us? Also Sam Dwyers made a pretty good transition from the VFL to the AFL maybe we should consider some mature agers from there, we've done ok with zorko and bewick who we've got as mature agers in the past

Should get him on the jumper.

Rob Kerr's face instead of the lion's face? I can see that.

If I had more inclination, I'd even make it happen. :D

Where will he fit in a forward line of Cameron, Patton & Franklin? Would have thought there has to be some doubt if the Giants snag Buddy.

He plays like Simon Black

Originally from Kalgoorlie, Sheed has already played seven senior matches in the WAFL for Subiaco.

The smooth-moving, left-footed midfielder said being the senior player within the side came with some added expectation.

"There's a bit of pressure that comes with it, but it's a really good opportunity. I'm looking forward to it."

Sheed has been likened to Simon Black, and has averaged 15 disposals and kicked two goals in his senior WAFL appearances.

Just a quick question for the draft boffins out there. How's our academy lads shaping up so far this year, specifically Conway, Tckner and Freeman (understandably its early doors)? Especially interested in Freeeman as haven't heard much on him compared to Conway and Tickner.

Depending on how we finish the year is it likely we nominate all three, especially given our more mature talks haven't really set the world alight so far (hence both Freeman & Tickner).

Recruiters Insight: Part 1
6 June 2013
Sam Lord

While players and coaches are generally focussed on taking things ‘one week at a time’, the same can’t be said for the Club’s recruiting staff.

Talent identification is a never-ending process, and the Brisbane Lions’ recruiting team maintain a long-term approach in scouring the country to find the future stars of the AFL. For instance, many of the players that will be eligible to nominate for the 2013 AFL National Draft have already been heavily scrutinised over the past few years. So almost as soon as the final name was read out at the Rookie Draft last December, the Lions’ recruiting staff began looking towards the next crop of potential draftees.

“We started to formulate our list for 2013 at the end of last year,” Lions Senior Recruiting Manager Stephen Conole told lions.com.au. “We meet all the key stakeholders at the SANFL, WAFL and TAC Cup as well as the Division Two competitions to gauge to discuss players’ aptitude, family life, and their demands for 2013. It helps us paint a better all-round picture.

The Club’s ‘priority list’ is subject to change throughout the season as lesser-known players inevitably emerge as legitimate draft candidates, while some of the more highly-rated prospects from 12 months earlier can just as quickly drop off the recruiting radar.

“As for our three selections, Sam Mayes we regarded very highly as an U17 and maintained a strong interest throughout his final year. “We certainly knew about Marco Paparone and Michael Close, but both showed an enormous amount of improvement in their top-age year to shoot up our ranks.”
