I think it will depend on how he goes at the Champs and what improvement there is over the rest of the year. Its hard to see anyone using a ND pick on him atm but if he goes well from here on it is possible.

From what I've heard, he's improving at every outing. I don't even think he needs to play really well at the Champs - if he does one or two "special" things in each game, I think he'll be in demand.

Mind you, I did say the same about Aliir early last year but Smith obviously has a size advantage and, from what I've heard, is a bit more singleminded about his footy than Aliir was at stages of last season.

Edit: when you think about the likes of Merrett, Moran, Tippett - Smith shares a lot of those attributes - athletically gifted, a great size and an assumption that there is significant scope for improvement due to a delayed start to footy.

Mmm wouldn't mind Dunstan after watching today's game. Reminds me of Wines a bit.

Did Aish play? Any other standouts?

Smith is perfect for us. With Bergs and Longer in the team, and Martin as a 3rd back up there is no pressure on the kid. He will probably get some good game time in the seconds as the primary ruckman the first few years and can be left to develop. By the time he has a good 4 years to develop and add size, about she 22, there will probably be a spot in the team for him.

Bates and Karpany are popping up a lot around half forward, Bates looking better. Aish pretty quiet but it's his first game back. Scharenberg bringing himself more into in the third, but started slow.

Really wish I could watch the games of the national champs, even if it was streamed. You would think in today's day and age it could be done.

Dayle Garlett- Perth v Swan Districts - He's kicked 2.2 or 3.2 in almost a half of football - playing as a full forward with the forward 50 to himself then rotating half forward to the centre. Beautiful snapped goal on the left charging from the goal line. And as I'm typing another one. Great crumbling skills, really knows where the goals are. When pushing centre he sets up really well and reads extremely well. Still a little light so is pushed off a bit. Field kicking really good, creative and allows his team mates to run onto well placed kicks. Looks fitter and willing to run. Heavily tag too. Had two on him when playing forward. More to come.

If he's well behave do people think Garlett is a first round lock?

I wouldn't think so but I would like to think that a team in our current situation (low on the ladder for a number of years) would take a gamble. Second round pick possibly.

Just out of curiousity but who are people's favourites? All the communication is second hand and it will be great to see them play but who are your front runner for our first pick?

Ok, I'll run through his performances this year (today is the first I've seen) then I'll get to analyzing the game and his game.

Game 1 - Didn't play for some reason?
Game 2 - Same again.
Game 3 - Swan: 14. 17. 101 to Perth 15. 13. 103 - Garlett 2.2 - 13D - 2M - 1T
Game 4 - Swan: 15. 12. 102 to South Freo 12. 9. 81 - Garlett 0.0 - 22D - 9M - 2T
Game 5 - Swan: 12. 12. 84 to Peel 15. 8. 98 - Garlett 2.1 - 16D - 2M - 1T
Game 6 - Swan: 15. 8. 98 to West Perth 9. 16. 70 - Garlett 2.1 - 29D - 13M - 4T
Game 7 - Swan: 11. 17. 83 to East Perth 15. 13. 103 - Garlett 2.2 - 27D - 11M - 2T
Game 8 - Swan: 10. 12. 72 to Subiaco 12. 13. 85 - Garlett 4.1 - 16D - 5M - 0T
Game 9 (TODAY) Swan: 16. 8 104 to Perth 15. 10 100 - Garlett 6.2 - 23D - 8M - 0T

Quite a high quality game with a few ex-AFL and currently listed players. Tony Notte, Brennan Stack, Paul Bevan, Kyle Reimers etc. Swan fought back hard and sealed the game really well. The last quarter was desperate and intense, and the skill level shone through with both teams.

On to Garlett. He was heavily tagged by Perth, when he was playing from the goal line he had one behind him close scragging him and one in front and even with that level of attention he was able to get free and have a few shots on goal. In the first he ran out on a fast lead and snapped without looking on the left and it was never going to miss. He pushed up to half forward then into the centre halfway through the second. He was really noticeable in the centre bounce, read it well and got to the position of inside-breaking outside runner, only his man inside fumbled and missed him. He knew where to go and got space easily even with the attention.

He bobbed up as a get out kick in the back half and didn't disappoint with his disposal from there, he would either hit it flat and hard to he player or place it so they could run onto it. Really creative stuff from him too, with one of his kicks out in from of a man on the wing who moved it forward quickly and it resulted in a badly needed goal.

He knows where to run to get space in the middle or on either flank. He is smart with his disposal and loves to kick. A good mark of the ball where he reads the ball in flight exceptionally well.

Having read all of the "he's a dickhead and doesn't care about footy at all" it was clear to see that he really wanted to be there and to work for his team mates. He was focused which I didn't think would be the case when you have two men on you scragging you at every opportunity. On field he was upbeat, bringing team mates into the game and was listening to, and wanting to do what his coach was telling him. In saying this, I'm only reading him on what I saw today.

His crumbing was first rate and really reminded me of the way Betts or the other Garlett just know where the goals are and snap without looking. His speed when going for the ball, the clean pick up are just traits you see in those two and him. I think one of the Perth defenders was in awe of him on one occasion, just looked shocked when he snapped truly, as was the crowd.

His tank was ok, he ran hard when he needed to and his defensive running was quite good but if he is going to the AFL that is something they will work on. He ran out the 4 quarters, although a bit of each quarter he was sitting in the forward 50 having a bit of a rest. He ran out the last quarter really well setting up and creating with his disposal. Perth thought the best way to expose him in the last was to run off him but he was wise to it and did what he had to.

After the Swans hit the front right near the end of the game he was one out in forward 50 because the Swans flooded the Perth forward line. Swans got the ball out of congestion in their back flank and kicked as far wide as they could and Garlett lit up, he burned off two guys with one only able to stay with him and try to body him, he kept either tapping the ball to his advantage or taking possession and hand balling in front of him to keep it alive and wearing the attention of the defender. He gathered the ball on the boundary line and on the wrong side for a left footy he shot and it faded for a point. It would've been something you'd see from the rarest of footballers in the AFL.

A really good day for his side and for him - a come from behind win and 6 goals with 23 disposals rotating to most parts of the ground.

If drafted I think he'd start as a small forward but he wouldn't stay there too long once his engine is managed and increased. If his off field issues are quieter then I see no reason not to draft him. He was the best player on the ground (although Bevan was a close 2nd).

Again, it was amazing that he broke the tag and the constant attention. If you were looking for someone with A-Grader potential then I think he could be your man.

A lot of water to go under the bridge from here to then but from what I read from him today I think he is well worth getting him into the system...and I hope we get him.

If you guys have any questions please let me know, I'm happy to answer them.

He had the talent to go first round last year and wasn't drafted. It all comes down to his behaviour - if he's good, he probably is a first rounder. If he's not, it just reaffirms the clubs' evaluation and he'll be undrafted again.

Awesome Tripple R thank you!!

Great read. I think he'll go first round if he behaves himself based on the stats you presented. If we got him with a second round pick that would be awesome.

How was his clearance work?

How was his clearance work?

He knows where it is going and gets into good position. In the forward line he was getting to that position and standing a bit flat footed in some occasions (because he knows how to snap fast and accurately), at others he was running into the space in front of the man picking up the ball. In the AFL if he is just waiting for it by standing there he will get exposed if his opponent is wise to him. He is the type that knows where the ball is going and if you're defending against him you'd follow him very closely because if he doesn't get it, you will.

He looked great in the centre bounce although he only got to do that 2-3 times. Each time he either got into the right position ready to run on and they stuffed the disposal or the other ruck won it clear down to a mid.

Around the ground he was more outside running on or sweeping behind to release a kick.

Again, he's the type that knows where the ball is going, he has the speed and skill to execute what he wants to do. It's up to him now to continue what he is doing and make a name for himself and if he does that then whoever gets him will be extremely pleased. He just looked a class above all others today and that includes current and ex-AFL footballers.

Yeah but is he what we desperately lack ATM? we have outside type mids We need to improve our inside clearance work..... Or do we just take the best player available.

Im surprised a club didnt rookie list Garlett last year and leave him home to sort out his issues...similar to what the crows did with Dangerfield (all be it his 1st year off was for school).

Dangerfield didn't come with the same 'baggage' as Garlett, he was finishing school. Dangerfield did a commendable thing by finishing school and not playing footy. Garlett on the other hand doesn't seem like the person who brings a good culture to the club like Dangerfield.

umm...thought I said that in short?? I understand that Garlett brings baggage, which is why using just a rookie spot to secure him then leave him back and work with a Wafl club to support him while he grows up and hopefully sorts out his issues...which it looks like he is making head ways into

If a club were to rookie him I would expect them to make him leave WA and live a fairly sheltered life if he really wants it.

I
I know...my point was that clubs should think outside the box every now and then...especially when it is just a rookie spot you are risking

I suspect that young Dayle needed the ego bitchslap of being utterly rejected in a whole draft. Coud be the making of him.

Your plan has merit but I reckon the AFLPA would have had a different view.

You're absolutely right, I think the rejection that was handed to him could've gone two ways. 1 - the path of self destruction which seeing him not playing in the first two WAFL games of the year I suspected the worst. 2 - what he seems to be doing now.

ABC TV interviewed him after the game yesterday and little kids were running up and getting his autograph, he didn't stay outside to do this it was as he was walking in with the team celebrating with them. He played for his team, not himself yesterday. I was worried going to the games with the numbers he has been producing that it would all be about him and I was relieved it wasn't.
