List Mgmt. 2013 Draft /PSD/Rookie draft discussion

Apologies in advance, I was going to make a post specifically for it but I don't have the privileges. All the fuss about Jaeger O'Maera and Jack Martin made me wonder if we have been out drafted/strategised by the Suns so I investigated further. Again using the AFL official players ratings it seems the current difference between us is only Gary Ablett. I've made a chart comparing there player positioning with ours. I've added our excellent offseason trades (in bold)
Our respective draft choices have been italicised. Our respective franchise salary players have been underlined.Happy to report we seem to have nailed it. It was made easy coming a year after GCS and stealing their first rounders away in 2011, then dominating the next 2 years drafts as well has us in good stead.

There are some interesting groupings. Ablett aside it's even for the first 150 or so. Then we have a bunch poised to breakthrough between 160 and 240.
With the bulk of our squad a year younger, you wouldn't be out of line to expect us to overtake them this year. The chart would say our core is already more elite overall than them and with time on our side, more upside still. Obviously stats aren't everything but this does give an interesting overview. With Boyd and Patton bringing goals who knows what could happen? The pieces are in place.

Sorry I had a table that had the two lists side by side it was more effective visually but you can still see our dominance.
A good draft today will only enhance that.

Nice speech by Boyd, I can see why he's earmarked as a future captain

McCarthy is 194cm and grew 15cm in the past year. I know nothing about him as a footballer but that smells like versatility to me, can't imagine he played too 'tall' at 179cm.

Liked a comment on the main board thread "You must be This tall to ride with GWS"

Also just noticed Simon Tunbridge was elevated from the rookie list at the Weagles. One of the few to walk out on us for homesickness reasons. Good luck to him.

Thoughts on draft -

Boyd - Always the stand out player and looks to be a thorough professional...can't miss
Kelly - The worker, this kid will get every ounce of ability from himself, he is on a mission to make it and he will
McCarthy - Love him from what I've seen as a player but shocked we selected him. Just not sure where he fits in with Cameron/Patton/Boyd/Tomlinson/Jaksch already there. Has incredible raw talent and will be a WA alumni for Lobb and Cogs
Lobb - Rapped with this selection, has genuine height and athleticism. Now with Mumford/Phillips/Downie and Lobb we have some nice ruck depth

All in all pretty happy. Even though McCarthy was a surprise he was really a top 10 selection on talent. Perhaps he can learn down back as he is very raw. Would have liked a Taylor as he would have injected some speed but obviously his lack of height turned a few people off.

I reckon on face value Brisbane, GWS and Collingwood were the big winners with St Kilda also doing pretty well but we will only really know in about 5 years!!

So on monday we have another list lodgement and it seems that Downie and Whiley are still unsigned so they might have something to worry about. Also on Monday we can prelist any nsw zoned rookies so hopefully we will give guys like Gibbons & Ellis a shot. Then on Wednesday we have the psd (lamb), and the full rookie draft - then were all done!

I can see why Downie should be worried, but Whiley played well enough as a stopper that he was worth his list spot IMO.
