I know the National Draft is yet to take place, but with the Rookie Draft occurring this year only one week after the National draft I thought it might be worthwhile throwing out a few speculative names you think the club should look at.

We should have the full four selections available this year with Riley being taken by Melb and Tambling apparently not interested in a rookie position.

Who are your four selections?

Ben Cavarra – Eastern Ranges / 173cm / 70kg / ‘95

Only three players have won the Eastern Ranges B&F twice - Sam Mitchell, Rory Sloane and Ben Cavarra. Pretty elite company. Interestingly, Mitchell and Sloane were both overlooked in their first draft year, and it appears Cavarrra is likely too as well. His height seems to be counting against him, meaning at AFL level he's only likely role would be as a small forward. A quality small forward is now not a pressing need with Betts, which will provide some time to see if this kid can make the step up to SANFL level and then hopefully AFL level against bigger bodies. He was also captain of Eastern Ranges, so appears to have leadership.

Amazing this kid not asked to the Draft Combine. Won the Ranges B&F last year as a bottom ager playing out of the fwd pkt and then the midfield and then went onto perform very strongly during the TAC season this year as well as the Champs. Finishes off with terrific GF performance where he absolutely dominated. Hard at it type, who is under every pack and who makes every possession count. Quick, agile and an elite foot on him gives recruiters plenty of reasons to look at him rather than ignore him because he is sub 175cm. This kid knows how to get the footy and make the other team hurt when he uses it.

Josh Glenn – Centrals / 180cm / 77kg / ‘94

It appears Glenn is not certain whether he wants to pursue an AFL career, but has the talent to if he has the desire. Be happy to offer a rookie position to give him a taste of it, as if he wants to grab the opportunity we've done well. I can't imagine any interstate club taking the gamble unless he has indicated he wants to commit.

Been a revelation in the seniors this year where he has really come to prominence as a running HB type. Only 19 and is very similar to Luke Brown from last year in how goes about it. Will go 1:1 but he can really hurt you on the outside with run and ball use. Will rack up big numbers if left unchecked, uses it an elite level, and he attacks the lines with really good pace. He is a weapon. Not sure how keen to be drafted but lets hope he has a crack. Saw him play a couple games in crappy conditions and he was a standout which I rate highly.

Range: 30-rookie
Profile: Back flanker with some real pace to him. Glenn has some real penetration on his kick over 60m and is an excellent user of the footy hitting his targets by foot over a variety of ranges. Shows real composure and never seems phased. Very strong mark overhead and can take marks 1v1 as well as come off his man at times for some intercept marks.

Do people remember Paul Marschall? Last year, was touted as a National Draft selection and arguably the most promising of the 19/20 year olds in the SANFL. But he said no to the AFL and has since quit even the SANFL. Well, Josh Glenn is the opposite. Last year, he quit the SANFL after playing a handful of games in the U18s and instead played Division 4 football. But a change of heart has seen him want to make the most out of his footballing, and he made a return to the SANFL and Central Districts. Not only is he back, but he has played every game in the league side and has been one of the better players. Glenn is a hard at defender, who can also play further up the field. He shuts down his man, rebounds well and in the last few games has shown he can have a real impact on the scoreboard. Strong mark and has no problems with running into the packs. Is also a long and accurate kick. The only question is whether he will nominate for the draft, and quite a few AFL teams are doing their best to make sure he does.

Last I read he hasn't nominated for the draft. If he had he might be a 20-30 pick. Certainly not available to rookie.

Matt Fuller would be worth a look should he be around. Not sure he will be available. I think a mature, ready to go ruckman would be handy and I wouldn't be adverse to rookie list Tambling.

I believe Tambling was told by the AFC he'd be offered a rookie contract and he replied thanks but no thanks.

I'm pretty happy about that. I didn't really want Tambling back for a sympathy pick.

Jesse OBrien (Bris) - Quick, Long Kicking Wingman
Nick Favretto (WAFC) - Strong bodied midfielder/half back. Left Footer
Josh Waldhuter (CDFC) - Hard as nails small defender. Great skills and elite Tackler
Peter Steefe (SAFC) - Jack the Giant ruckman. Very good tap ruck

EDIT:
I totally forgot Cameron Conlon - Athletic Ruck/Forward if it wasnt for injuries wouldve been gone by pick 25 in this draft. Swap him and Steefe over for me.

Wouldn't mind us having a serious look at Louis Herbert from the local Ballarat Rebels for a Rookie spot if he again misses out in the main draft, goes alright this lad and importantly has the speed and versatility to fill a number of roles, very, very good all round skill set as well. Team-mate of Matty Crouch. Can't have too many Rangas in your side!! :D

Louis Herbert (North Ballarat Rebels)

Height: 187 cm
Weight: 75 kg
Position: Utility player- rotates between wing, half-back
Player comparison: Kyle Hardingham
Strengths: Skills, versatility, marking
Weaknesses: Impact across four quarters

Being overlooked in last year’s national draft is an unfortunate experience, however for North Ballarat Rebels’ Louis Herbert, his head has remained in the game throughout the 2013 TAC Cup season in a bid to seek redemption. The incredibly self-aware, top-age player has recognized the importance of his own development and has sought to improve his game throughout the year.

The fiery redhead is well adapted to the modern game, where in the cutthroat world of AFL one needs to offer an array of skills and benefits to the team. Herbert’s versatility is a significant standout: once considered comfortable in the one position, his rotation to the wing this season has proven an advantageous strategic choice. Consequently, Herbert’s flexibility across both a forward and defensive position will be a handy addition to any club. Whilst he may not quite have the height to be considered a key tall player to the side, what he lacks in height he makes up for in skills.

His kicking is rarely inaccurate and has the strength behind it to be smoothly cleared from defence or added to the chain of scoring assists. As well, his quick hands are imperative to the speed of the game, helping Herbert in the endeavor to clear the ball and contribute to the flow. Solid marks are a common occurrence in his performance, another skill that has been fine-tuned over the course of his playing career and could edge him above the rest.

In contests, Herbert more often than not comes out on top despite his slim-built frame. Often given the task of closing down key players when in a defensive position, his ability to win the contested ball both- from the ground and in the air- and efficiently dispose of it reflects why he can be depended upon with confidence. Averaging around 25 touches a game throughout the TAC Cup season, it isn’t difficult to fathom his effect on the North Ballarat Rebels. His surprisingly quick pace is another of his handy assets and will be well suited to the big stage in whichever position he is best suited to.

His weaknesses lie in the fact that whilst he contributes to stellar passages of play in each game, he sometimes lapses in consistently making an impact across all four quarters. This is reminiscent of a few other potential draftees this year, thus they must all seek to overshadow this limitation in order to differentiate themselves from the rest. However, Herbert’s maturity combined with his hardworking and intelligent approach to the game and his own development means he has the capability of fixing this up if given the opportunity.

In the Bound For Glory News Rising Stars Phantom Draft, Herbert was selected by Collingwood with pick 48 to play a utility role similar to Tyson Goldsack and plug holes where ever required.

The bright, hardworking utility player faces an integral challenge up against the cream of the crop of this year’s players, yet his personal development thus far has demonstrated that he is more than capable. Whilst he may not be among the highest picks, it would be a shame to see his talents overlooked yet again.

Rebels Louis Herbert, Matt Crouch in TAC Cup team of the year

    Rebel Louis Herbert
THE VERSATILE Louis Herbert has received the TAC Cup coaches' award as the most influential opposition player each week.
Herbert claimed the honour in the TAC Cup's Morrish Medal count at Etihad Stadium last night.

He also caught the attention of selectors to be named in the TAC Cup Team of the Year at half-back.
Rebels captain Matt Crouch was named in the centre.
A South Warrnambool export, Herbert plays with the Rebels under the 19-year-old rule and proved a handy, consistent addition Vic Country's under-18 national campaign.
Crouch, from Beaufort Football Club, worked his way back on field from a broken hand to make a strong impact for Vic Country and the Rebels late in the season.
In a tough season, the Rebels won two games this season mostly sporting an inexperienced and largely bottom-age playing group.

Callum Bartlett - updated highlights 2013 with Brisbane Lions - hope the link works I'm not good at this

I wonder if we would take a risk on Marlon Pickett, just got out of jail but done pretty well in the wafl apparently has a young family so hopefully he'll change his ways, could be another krakour story except marlons alot younger.

I think a lot of what happens in the rookie draft will depend on which rated players slide through draft. From what I can tell the crows and port both tend to stick with local talent in the rookie draft. Perhaps the offer to Tambling and Riley was a sign of the lack of draft depth more then sympathy!

With Ben Rutten probably in his last year, a KPD would have to be high on the clubs list. If someone like Cameron Giles somehow got through to Adelaide's 2nd pick or missed out altogether, they would be silly not to grab him straight away as a rookie.

True, i want to see Johnston played at CHB this year however. So he could take Talias role, with Talia moving to the lockdown full back from Rutten. Still leaving us Hartigan, CEY, Siggins and Shaw in the Magoos

Why as a key defender rather then a third tall? I haven't seen him in defense at all but I thought with him not being that tall, fast or strong he wouldn't really be suited as a KP defender.

Agree - I'm an advocate of LJ in defence but he can't be a KPD to take on a gorilla forward.

Sounds a bit too much like Lucas Herbert for my liking.
