These buggers are coming up soon, so I thought we'd better get a bit of discussion about it and maybe help each other out with some strategy. They seem a lot easier to navigate this year, but will still catch a few out. I suppose just let everyone know whether you are playing for leagues or overall and then give your advice

For myself, I'm going for overall but I'm not going to focus too heavily on the byes.
- I plan to keep my team balanced as much as possible and aim for a 10/10/10 split. This may not be even possible, particulary trying to get 20 playing each week. eg I need more round 12 bye players, so will look to get Priddis and JPK and oust some round 11 bye rookies.
- I will not sideways trade any premiums during this time, but if trades are plentiful I may trade to avoid a doughnut.
- Where possible my rookies will be traded out during their bye week.

Sucks that Gold Coast, Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon are on the same week. I'm just going to accepts like 5 donuts. :(

yep, rd 13 is a disaster in the making - people will rise and fall 1500 spots easily

5 donuts would mean you had 17 players from those 6 teams - man that's a bizarre balance (assumes all 30 are playing)

I'm still in a strong spot for overall but my focus is on cash leagues, so I'm just going to target two bye rounds hard and accept a loss on the other. I'm thinking I'll still be undefeated in both cash leagues at that stage so it's an ideal point to conserve trades.

It was an exaggeration. :p But still, look at the players that will be out round 13. Ablett, Pendles, Swan, Watson, Murphy, O'Meara (if any still have him by rd 13), Goddard, Gibbs, H. Shaw etc.

I spose the key is have a bit of depth in the side and hope for the best. Stock up on DPPs.

round 12 and 13 rookies and midpricers are the key for mine.

have some cash left over and upgrade or downgrade to players that have just had their bye.

For example I intend on holding jaeger until round 12, then he goes for a rookie or a premo that has already had their bye.

It's tough because most of the better rookies are round 11 bye ones, ideally you would want mostly round 13 bye rookies (or even round 12 for round 11 premium upgrades prior to round 12) and once round 13 comes along, upgrade these round 13 rookies who are about to have their bye to round 11 or 12 premiums who have just completed theirs. One of the reasons I'll be downgrading to Lonergan this week is exactly that, he is a round 13 bye rookie who will hopefully max out come round 13, ready for an upgrade to a round 11 or 12 premium, or at worst, a downgrade to a round 11/12 bye rookie on the bubble.

Having 1-2 M/F's & 1-2 B/M's in your midfield is the easiest way of avoiding 0's during the MBR's. Worked well for me last year.

Where would you start them in the midfield or in the fwd/def. I've got no DPP in the mid they're all in there other posi.

I currently have SJ & Rocky in my mids. Have had them as my M5 & M6 for a few weeks. Regardless of trades I want to keep 2 M/F links in the mids and adding a B/M link in the mids this week...maybe another one when I bring Goodes back in for a maxed out Dwyer/Neade next week. It make life so much easier having 3-4 DPP's in the mids, especially this year with an extra 2 spots in the mids...

You traded Goodes out and are trading him back in?

Yep. Brought in another premo Def. Then will bring Goodes back in at the expense of a maxed out rook. Not as silly as it seems, especially since Goodes still has a very low B/E but averaging 94. With so many defenders out, I still need points coming in while he serves his suspension. I suppose I could have done the same thing and traded Gibbs out then back in, but since Goodes was a confirmed out for 2 weeks and Gibbs half a chance to play this week, I'll stand by that decision. Should be a straight swap Neade > Goodes next week. Move Vlastuin to M10 and Goodes back to B6.

I actually traded out Wines this week for Vlastuin and then upgraded Heath to H.Shaw this week.

I put Goodes on my mid bench but will swap Goodes back up to the backline via Vlastuin next week.

Will keep Vlastuin around till after the byes have finished to help deal with them.

I don't have a mid/forward DPP in my midfield yet but not sure whether I should pick up a rookie one or a premium one?

You'll be needing an M/F in your mids very soon. Preferably a premo.

Yeah I might do that actually.

Out of the mid/forward permos I don't have Stevie J. I have Bartel, Rockcliff and Martin.

Is there any other mid/forward premo that I should look at besides Stevie J? o_O

Edit -

Just remembered that Andrew Walkers a mid/forward too. He could be my man. :thumbsu:

the DPP has no bearing on bye scores i think (Isn't it simply your best 18 scores regardless if they are on the field or on the bench???)

I might have that wrong as have not and will never read the actual SC rules

NEW IN 2013 - to better-reflect the actual competition, you'll score from your best 18 players only in any position, from your selected, on-field Starting 22. You'll still need to ensure that your best available players are in your starting 22 line-up.

Doing something similar. Goodes to Hanley and Stevenson to Birchall (I know they're both going down in price but avoids doughnuts)

Then next week Wines to Goodes for 50k and better scoring. Will throw him back into the backline as I reckon Goodes is a keeper and then I can put that terrible terrible trade in Saunders on my mid bench.
