I tend to agree with him. I recall a time past where StKilda had by far the best full forward, but it still didn't get us anywhere.
I would have thought that had a lot more to do with the fact that we had been a basket-case of a club for a couple of decades and had little idea of what it took to win a premiership, not to mention that we didn't bat anywhere near deep enough in our 20, rather than having Tony in our team costing us a premiership.

In fact, I would have thought that actually having him in the team was the major factor in us actually losing our basket-caseness and getting within cooee of a premiership. We probably would have just continued to suck in a huge way had we not had him, but we've now learned from that whole experience and know that you aren't going to get by on the back of one or two, even someone as good as Lockett, but that you need to bat deep and be strong in all areas, which is what I'm suggesting we do by getting Boyd and then looking to build our midfield and key defence posts from there.

If you were going to make that argument you did about Lockett you could counter that we had someone that was widely considered to be the best "mid" in the AFL in the late 90's (particularly in '97/98, when he won back to back Brownlow's), plus a couple of handy offsiders in Winmar and Burke and that that didn't get us a premiership either, so lets not bother going after "mids", because that didn't work out for us.

I don't think anyone that is suggesting we go after Boyd is suggesting that we just get him and then don't bother to look to build our future midfield after that, but more that we take this rare opportunity to get someone like Boyd and then continue to build the midfield after that, so that we have a balanced list and future team, with the aim of being strong in all areas, not just one or two.

Think of all the teams that have won the premiership since say 1998 and the strong tall options they had up forward on GF day and throughout that year:

1999: North- Carey, McKernan, Longmire
2000: Essendon- Lloyd, Lucas, Hird
2001: Brisbane- Brown, Lynch, Bradshaw
2002: Brisbane- Brown, Lynch
2003: Brisbane- Brown, Lynch, Bradshaw
2004: Port- Tredrea, Lade
2005: Sydney: Hall, Goodes
2006: West Coast: Lynch, Hansen
2007: Geelong: Mooney, Ottens, N Ablett
2008: Hawthorn- Franklin, Roughead
2009: Geelong- Hawkins, Mooney, Ottens
2010: Collingwood- Cloke, Dawes, Leigh Brown
2011: Geelong- Hawkins, Podsiadly, Ottens
2012: Sydney- Reid, Goodes, Pyke

As much as I like the prospects of White and Lee, I'd still absolutely love a huge "power forward" to go with them, rather than having a Hickey or Mac trying to play forward for the majority of the time long-term.

Then I think we'd have a huge chance at a premiership in a few years time, once we've added more high-end quality to our midfield group and hopefully a couple of really good options for the key defensive posts. That's what I think it's going to take to win a premiership any time in the near future, especially if GWS or Gold Coast happen to become the juggernaut's their lists suggest they could become.

It's not like we've only got this year, or our first pick this year, to rebuild our list. We're maybe half way through our list rebuild, perhaps not even that, so we'll have plenty of opportunities to fill all the gaps we have.

Jaegar o'Meara has been re-signed by the Suns. Saints fans, post your tears here. :(

i dont think our tears will compared to the flood thats probably happening on the west coast board right now

You can build a premiership side around a power forward, complimented with a good midfield, & a dour defence..

And real talented power forwards only come around every two or three years..

One look at the Hawks or Cats reflects this, highlighted by aussierules post..

If we're at least three years off from challenging for top 8, i like to see us chase the no 1 pick without paying overs..!!

A forward line trio of Boyd, Lee & White could be the most exciting forward line going around with Markworth & Saady..!

With young talent like Newnes, Roberton, Hickey, Ross, Steven, Saunders, Murdoch, Wright, Webster, Curren, Pierce, Siposs, & Simpkin, guaranteed to be part of the Saints future we're more than halfway to building a team worthy of challenging for the top 8 in 2016..

We can then develop our own KD' plus more midfield talent over the next few drafts, with the sole aim of long term sustained success..!!

By focusing on stockpiling talent similiar to GC & GWS, maybe us long suffering supporters will finally see a St.Kilda premiership..

You're all starting to get to me I think. Boyd-White-Lee could be unlike anything we've ever seen before. Throw Stanley back to play on the third tall or resting ruckmen and he can provide the chop out in the ruck.

White Lee Siposs/Markworth
Saad Boyd Minchington

Where do I sign?

If we're realistic that finals is out of the equation for the next few years, logic tells you that Boyd would be one major piece of the puzzle sorted for the future..

He's going a to be a match winner like Hogan, Cameron, Dixon, & i don't want to see us regret missing out..

And he's a Victorian..!!

Like ARR said we're most likely going to have the next couple of years to load up on mids and there's plenty of examples of good ones being taken outside the top 20 let alone top 5. I think we've got a pretty good young group of mids anyway, just need one or two elite prospects in there and we're set.

I think there is a chance this draft could turn out like the 2007 one. Cotchin/Aish are both elite level players and pure footballers. Boyd/Kreuzer are big men that can dominate the underage but might struggle in the higher league. I'm Not suggesting Boyd won't be an A-grade player, but Aish certainly isn't significantly worse.

It's the way Boyd presents, his ability to position his body & easily clunk them..
Very tough to play on him physically now, let alone in a few more years..
Also has the smarts to time his leads & is a proven goal kicker..
After seeing the talent of Joe Daniher & Jesse Hogan, the prospect of a unit like Tom Boyd at full forward for the Saints is exciting..
Aish will be a star, & with a famous SA name like Aish the pull to head back to S.A to the Crows or Port in a few years could be a concern...
One last attribute re Boyd, from all reports has an excellent attitude to succeed & the desire to fulfill his talent..
What more could you want from a NO 1 draft pick..!

Hey guys, the bell for wake up time has just rung, there is a 1 per cent chance we land Boyd. We do not own, nor will we own the number one pick.

So lets get excited about all of Kelly, Aish, Billings and Scharenerg, we should be debating them a lot more than hoping we win tattslotto.

Our talls look good, Lee will become a nice player and we still have Rooey for another 3 years.

We need the best talent at our pick, for the next 3 years.

There are a lot of things going for us, but the big prize IMO is Hugh Goddard, lets get him the legitimate way by stinking all year long next year!

So do we swap Macca for pick 1 to get the deal done..?
Like most i admire Ben McEvoy the St.Kilda footballer, & respect the way he goes about it every time when he runs out on the ground knowing he'll be giving every contest his all..!
On the flip side Macca could be part of a package deal, with another player for a return pick..
After seeing Pierce last week, Hickey's tap work & we know Stanley is ultimately a ruckman/forward..
Therefore our ruck stocks are in a healthy state, & there's no reason we can't rookie-list Shepheard..
To prise the No 1 pick from GWS will have to involve trading McEvoy, there's no other alternative to realistically getting the trade done..
No doubt Bains,Pelchen & co will be entertaining the notion..
Seems we had a decent crack at Lachie Henderson in the last few weeks, but he's sticking with the Blues..

A lot can happen between now & fifteen months, with at least pick 3 this year in our hand, we have more pull than 1% to nab Boyd.. Time will tell..

I'm looking at this year's opportunities to load up on talent, next year is a long way off..

If we can trade for another first rounder, that's another outcome i'm sure we'll be looking at leaving us with 3 picks inside the first 22..

From what you know, is there pretty much no way we will looking to trade to get this pick?

15. Sydney – Darcy Gardiner (192cm, 84kg defender – Geelong)
Extremely good one-on-one and can play at either end, but projects best as a key defender at AFL level. A great user of the ball.

The more I read about this kid, the more I hope we try for GWS' pick #10 as well as our single figure pick. A comment that stood out was 'hates getting beaten'; perfect for a KPD. Imagine Boyd and Gardiner together down the track. As Bruuuuce would say, "Delicious"...

Get two ready KPD in this year's drafts, in addition to Boyd or Aish, Gardiner and a host of mids and we're going a long way to setting ourselves up for a flag tilt sooner rather than later.

I agree with everything else from this post. His attitude to improvement is great, but he is easily annoyed and an angry Boyd is an easily beaten Boyd. That said, he is improving in this field as well. When provoked, he reacts, and not in a positive manner.

Congrats mate.

I think we'd all love that pick 10 but how are we going to get it?
