Np more Ruck with the first pick. Lions basically passed up Selwood for Luey, and that hasn't worked out. While I believe ruck is important, its never worth the first round pick. They should use first round pick for a pure forward, or gun midfielder.
No one's arguing in favour of taking a ruckman. Just discussing whether or not Wright projects as a forward.

Again, I am not conceding that he is merely a pure ruckman. If he was, I'd definitely agree that we shouldn't use a first rounder on him.

I just think too many people are getting carried away with the word "ruck" in ruck/forward.

Drew Petrie is a forward/ruckman and I'd happily take a Drew Petrie clone in our forward line for the next decade.

Still trying to get a good read on Wright, and as always at this time of year, it's hard to separate the facts from the regurgitated second hand opinions from the Drafts and Trading board.

No thanks, Drew Petrie is very inconsistent, i wouldn't want that type of player. We need pure forward or midfielder, Wright is not a pure forward and never will be.

I think TBD was referring to the mould that is Drew Petrie.

Not the player.

Who would you take if McCartin, Petracca, Wright and Brayshaw are taken?

I understand, but that mould of player is not worth a top 5 selection. Most of those players go around second round pick, I think Drew himself was early 20s.

This is only assumption. I would take the safest option. If those are taken, I would take the next best midfielder. Let Browny develop Close, Freeman and Hammelman.

Similar to last year, Aish was the safest.

Harder to spot the clear safe options in the 5-12 range in this draft. Things may be clearer closer to the draft but it's a funny one this year.

I think Wright is more like Jaryd Roughhead. Is he ok to draft at pick 5?

If he's like Roughhead then he's more of a pure forward, so Yes, it would be worth it.

But I have not seen Wright as a pure forward from what I have seen.

Brisbane need a pure forward who can kick 50 goals a season, if he's that player, then select him. But we don't need a player who plays ruck, and kicks 25 goals a season

This is what has to be ascertained. If our recruiters take him, it will be because they rate his forward potential.

Don't even know what Wright looks like, let alone how he plays but based on the discussion here (ruck/forward vs forward/ruck, extra height, athleticism), would Charlie Dixon be an apt comparison?

Lets hope he has forward potential rather than our recruiters hopes he has forward potential.

There is a big difference here.

Yes, I like it when our recruiters are right instead of wrong too. They do watch a hell of a lot of footy though and track these guys a long way out.

I think there is a clear top four and then quite a gap after them and also quite even. If we stay at pick 4 we take the best option be it Wright, Brayshaw or even McCartin as a definite long shot. Petracca has really firmed as that no1 pick and even though Saints need a KPF I think you take best available. If we had pick 1 I would go with him. All in all who ever we pick should add to our team irrespective of where they play. IMO you pick the best player when you're right at the top of the pointy end. Let's just all hope that when Frawley leaves Melb only get an end of first round compo or even mid first round.

Not sure I agree with that totally. When you have heaps of holes like the Saints, then I agree. When you have good young team balance like the lions, I would take McCartin as he is the best pure forward. Its more difficult to get quality tall forwards then midfielders. In my eyes, Lions only need 1 quality Tall forward and they are set. Depth midfielders and depth across the 22 can come with later selections.

Saints will be on the bottom for years to come, they can be more strategic when they eliminate the gaps in their lust, which I see as a long journey.

I dunno. Can't remember the last ruck we had who could kick 25. Have a look at Hale and you will see the value that type can add to a side. Better than getting the midfielder leftovers and having someone who can't truly influence a game.

I'll throw my two cents in with Wright. What is his set shot like from 55m? Looks to struggle outside of 50m. If he is more of a 45m or less goal kicker than it is a pass for me (as a earlier first rounder). I can see him sliding a bit.

Checkout Ben McEvoy's 2007 TAC season for Murray Bushrangers - was listed as 200cms & 95kgs, played 18 games around half of them as a roaming ruck then in the second half played predominantly as a key forward kicking 28 goals 13 behinds - Saints used pick 9 for Ben back in 2007.

I have see a lot of parallels between McEvoy and Wright - and believe he will have a fine career but it's my opinion that we might look at local 'talls' and either trade out our 1st rounder or as I've suggested before hope we look at a big utility/mid.

One of his biggest plus's is his long distance accurate shots for goal apparently

First time I've head anyone say that about his goal kicking.

I doubt we'll have a free late pick with our academy and father son prospects but if we did or he lasts to the rookie draft I'd love to get Caleb Daniel on the list and use him as that pacy small defender. probably not a position that really utilizes all of his strengths but I think he could excel there and we certainly need one. Probably excel anywhere on the field if he had a few more inches.
