I'm leaning more to the side of stacking the midfield. We need a bit of *shudder* X-factor (I hate the term), and I think that Pickett and Laverde are the two that really scream that in this year's draft once Petracca is gone. Ahern is probably the other because of his sheer pace.Gotta be Durdin right?

Rahul, I respect your opinion in such matters. Why all the doom and gloom? We have a robust process in place, do we not?Pick 4 without Wright or McCartin is a disaster.

)I dont disagree at all, but the comment was predicated on Wright and McCartin being gone already. None of Goddard, Lever, Marchbank or Durdin is arguably a forward, which is what we need. All seem better suited to CHB at this stage, with Durdin probably the best forward of that lot. Most clubs manage to stack their midfield all the time. Only StKilda under Lyon ( he seems to like Barlow fine now ) didn't.
Geelong - Selwood at pick 7.
Adelaide - Dangerfield at pick 10 ( Cotchin was pick 2 ).
2008 - multiple good players - a bit hard to put the early ones ( Hill, Yarran, Rich ) ahead of the others ( Sidebottom, Beams , Zharakis, Suban )
2009 - Dustin Martin was overlooked in favour of Scully and Trengove, but Fyfe was pick 20.
2010 - Heppel pick 8.
2011 - Tyson at 3, Wingard at 6.
2012 - Wines -pick 7
My point? The mids that are most highly regarded at the time of draft are not usually those that go the best ( oh but this year will be different ...... again)
Also , you can get a pretty good mid even if you aren't at the bottom of the ladder.
Now talls.
The goalkicking leaders:
Schulz, traded for Mitch Farmer lol, you can almost imagine that Beau Maister would go just as well with that midfield feeding him.
Franklin : traded for a million bucks tying up their salary cap for the foreseeable future, even with their bullshit cola. Originally an early pick.
Hawkins : F/S
Jack Riewoldt : late first rounder.
Jarryd Roughead : pick 2
Nick Riewoldt : Pick 1
Josh Kennedy" massive trade, originally pick 4. (mark murphy, daisy and xavier ellis ... lol ).
Josh Jenkins : Rookie.
Cloke : F/s
Petrie : Pick 23
Cameron : presumably would have been an early pick.
So no-one knows where to get the next big forward from. But unless you are brilliant at spotting untapped talent, ( Schulz ) or want to sell the family farm in a trade , or have a handy F/S the players that stand out for me among that lot are Franklin, Roughead, Nick Riewoldt, Jeremy Cameron and Josh Kennedy . Early picks.
"IF" our recruiters rate Wright and McCartin ( not as the best in this draft, but as good players in their own right ) we should give them a shot.
Gun midfielders just keep happening.
No offense to Mark Murphy, but it would be easier to replace him, than to get a Josh Kennedy.
Had never heard of him, so I went and looked up Inside Football... Wahey! He's had a fair old season (yes, yes, I know its only the NEAFL). 23 year old 187cm 84kg mid. Anyone know anything about him? Skills, pace, etc....Must say that Sydney Swans should be ripe for player poaching too, especially with Isaac Heeney being a preselection & being arguably the best mid in the draft. Surely that would make blokes like Shane Biggs, Tom Mitchell, Zac Jones, Brandon Jack more likely to consider a move, as they would most likely fall even further down the pecking order (if Heeney lives up to his ability/talent he's shown at U-18 level)

Don't know too much about him other than he averages about the same amount of touches as O'Keefe & Mitchell, not as many tackles or clearances, but a lot of rebound & inside 50s... Shame, he's just another back flanker thoughHad never heard of him, so I went and looked up Inside Football... Wahey! Rookie contract runs out at the end of the year, so if we saw something we liked we would get him for nothing. Moooooneyballlllllll.![]()
according to the review site below. Is a midfield type however with those sorts of numbers I wonder?History will also tell us that Pick 4 is generally doesn't have the career Pick 1 has, and a 6-16 year is not that much better than a 4-18 year. It's not worth the two wins.History tells us it's extremely rare for pick 1 to be the best player from their draft. As much as it sounds awesome to get McCartin or Petracca chances are neither will be the best in the draft.
Give me wins and pick 4 instead of losses and pick 1. Winning culture is good culture.
IMO this year there is Petracca, then Wright & McCartin, then the rest (very even after that). I want Petracca or Boyd, and I'd much rather have one of them than a couple of wins and Brayshaw or Durdin.Rahul, I respect your opinion in such matters. Why all the doom and gloom? We have a robust process in place, do we not?
Why throw the baby out with the bath water?
Agree Rors, we need to poach Jones, Jack or T Mitch. They also have Callum Mills coming through next year (I think he's better than Heeney, have fun with this Eddie) along with potential (read: extremely likely) father-son prospect Josh Dunkley, who would have been in the top bracket of mids. The time is now, invade the northern clubs.Must say that Sydney Swans should be ripe for player poaching too, especially with Isaac Heeney being a preselection & being arguably the best mid in the draft. Not him but they're the type we should target, those stuck behind very good players at the good sides not those stuck behind spuds at shit sides.Don't know too much about him other than he averages about the same amount of touches as O'Keefe & Mitchell, not as many tackles or clearances, but a lot of rebound & inside 50s... I think he's a mid though, probably can't crack into the Swans reserves midfield because of Mitchell, O'Keefe & Jack, so they play him off half-back in rotation & he still kills it
He played HB in his AFL games last year so not what we need, pass....![]()

He's a half back flanker...Jordan Kelly...?![]()

Then good side + stuck behind very good players = ..... Josh Walker....He's a half back flanker...![]()

*I'm so sorry......
There is my point a few others have mentioned it before as well.Look what our recruiting and player management group did last year, I feel pretty confident we're headed in the right direction. Anyone want to complain about any of Billings, Dunstan, Acres, Templeton, Weller, Savage, Delaney, Bruce or Longer..?

That one was for you.... xo
