A bit different when it's last years number one pick. I think the AFL might seriously reprimand the players abandoning ship before seeing out their initial contract if this continues. They will do an on the fly patch up job on the laws. The AFL are about to have some massive head aches with FA and it's associated player power. Contracts might as well be scrapped. Someone will make a stand against the players and not indulge them otherwise.

Given what the AFL did to Sydney last week, wouldn't rule out anything from a league perspective, which is kind of terrifying. But regarding players, the horse bolted the minute free agency was implemented - players were immediately empowered, and we're seeing the result now.

I hope the Dogs get a straight swap of Griffin for Boyd. Can't expect to throw bags of money at other clubs players and not expect people to target you as well. I want to see them lose Boyd, Cameron, Whitfield after targeting some relatively small fry (Jed Lamb, Shane Mumford, Callan Ward).
I don't. If GWS can get something more than Griffen then that gives us more chance of screwing them down to a better deal for #1.

Eg Boyd <------> Griffen, #26

Jaksch, #19, #40 <------> #7 (Carlton)

#1, #22 <-----> #4, #7, #26

Does anyone think that Pelchen's quote in that earlier article, about knowing that clubs are working to get more picks to deal for #1, is related to this Boyd news? By this, I mean that GWS will have obviously had enquiries about Boyd from WB even before this Griffen news, and have seen an opportunity to walk away with Griffen and pick 6 for Boyd (and maybe something else), which they would be keen to do, as they've since made progressions in their talks with Carlton to secure pick 7 from Jaksch, pick 19, and Whiley.

This would leave them with 4, 6, 7, and I feel this is the most logical "answer" to Pelchen's reference. Now, what we might get from them for pick 1 is still another question altogether. I'm not convinced that GWS have to go after a KPF this draft if Boyd leaves, since they still have Patton, Cameron, McCarthy, Stewart, and Tomlinson, with space needed for the resting ruckman, too.

If we could walk away with two, or even all three of those pick (not gonna happen, but hey, we can dream) and sort out a deal along the lines of Steven for 3 + 12 (with something else possibly added in from us, if need be), then having 3, 4, 6, 7, 12, and 22 (if we keep it) would be nothing short of incredible for our rebuild.

Obvious to us that AFL players care more about $$$ than loyalty these days. He's been in the AFL For 1 F****** year and thinks he can request a trade to a particular club. Money hungry flog

I would let Boyd go. Call up Shiel right now and put an offer in front of him. Try and force the 1 for 4 + Shiel trade now while GWS is weak.

Where there is smoke there is fire. All year people have been saying Boyd wants out... they have said the same about Shiel.

I ranted about contracted players wanting to leave the other day, but this takes the cake. Boyd has been there for a year. I don't like it.

Regardless, it might mean GWS are more likely to hang on to Pick 4, so that they can land McCartin as a replacement and thus meaning their interest in Pick 1 is not as strong. I'm happy to take Petracca, but I would love to get my hands on multiple top 10 picks.

I hope Dogs stay firm since Griffen is under contract too...

Either way that brings us into picture

I will be very happy to part with pick 1 for

4, 6 & tomlinson

or

4, 7 & tomlinson

Huh? If you just started a job and were offered 4 times the salary that you were on to move would you turn it down?

I really hate this. Draft means nothing now. Why bother keeping Pick 1 and nabbing Petracca when he can just turn around next season and say 'send me to Sydney?'

May as well turn pick 1 until mulitple picks, increases the chances that someone will actually stay.

Ok, for those that would know.....
How does Petracca stack up against Boyd in value? Who would be pick 1 if they were both in this draft?
Boyd

Key position types always tend to have greater value because you generally need a really high pick to get your hands on one (unless you get lucky and nab one through the F/S rule, or similar) whereas you can get good "mids" and so-on anywhere in the draft.

It would also depend on clubs needs. If they were flush for "talls" they would probably value Petracca more highly and vice versa.

What are the chances teams have been calling Jeremy Cameron today?

This could thrown yet another spanner in the works for us trading pick 1 and especially having a bidding war over it, because if WB get Boyd then they no longer have any need for it, as they won't need a McCartin/Wright any more and if GWS lose Boyd they may become a lot more keen to nab a McCartin/Wright, who they know they'll be able to get without pick 1 and won't be able to get if they pick Petracca at 1 and no longer have a top 6 pick. Getting Petracca may become much less of a priority, especially if they've just landed Griffen.
