List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

I don't know why the AFL rule that a club must go into the draft with three pics to fill.

I personally don't want to delist any players on the list. The only one being Josh Simpson with a view to rookie him.
The annoying thing is we are very unlikely to get anyone anywhere near as good as Simpson with our third pick.

So why would we rookie list Simpson. We just can't send him to the rookie list. He has to be delisted and than drafted as a rookie. You could do that by redrafting him to the main list. On the rookie list he can't play. If he's right you want him on the main list so he can be available for games. He's a third year player with amazing ability. I just don't see what we would gain by having Simpson on the rookie list. Delist and redraft at 54.

Because only positive actions and time will prove he has matured and totally committed to an AFL career.
The doubt about him will remain until he proves otherwise.
His behaviour was very serious and when there are other young players who want the same opportunity he has been given, it is up to him demonstrate he desperately wants it.
The rookie list is less risk for the club.

Pick 14: Adelaide – Caleb Marchbank

Position: Defender/forward
Height: 193 cm, Weight: 85 kg, DOB: 7/12/1996
Club: Murray Bushrangers
Projected draft range: 5-20
Plays like: Harry Taylor

The key position swingman has caught the eye of many teams to find his draft stocks rapidly rising. Arguably the best intercept mark in the TAC Cup competition, Marchbank’s performances at the National Championships were scintillating, whilst his TAC Cup form was consistent. He plays predominantly in defence, where his ability to read the ball in flight whether under pressure or not is exceptional. Meanwhile, his eagerness to rebound from the back half makes him a real playmaker on the counter attack. Marchbank could best be described as not too dissimilar to Jarrad Waite: he backs himself to win a contested mark, he can mark over his head when he’s expecting contact, and uses his strength in his kicking to set up further afield. He keeps opposition forwards quiet, whilst also having a big influence on the game himself – something not many key defenders have luck doing. Given his athleticism, Marchbank could really develop into a prototype utility, playing on a wing, half-forward or half-back to fill any need required: by the same token, he does look most settled in defence.

19. Caleb Marchbank (VIC – KPD)
Height: 193cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 12/07/1996
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers
Draft range: 5-20
Best position/role: Full back.
Strengths: 1v1 ability - 1v1 Marchbank is excellent displaying strong ability in the contest and ability to hold his position. He has strong ability to read and protect the drop zone and is capable either marking 1v1 or getting the spoil in as appropriate.
Intercept marking – Marchbank is a very good intercept mark with his ability to read the flight of the ball, get to the drop zone and take the intercept mark. He seems to read it earlier off the opposition’s boot. He has a good natural awareness for when he can and cannot leave his direct opponent. He has strong hands overhead and does not often drop his marks. Shutdown ability – Marchbank is an effective stopper and has the strength to contain or beat stronger forwards but also has the closing speed, agility and ability in the air to compete with those more athletic types. He has had success through the U18 Championships and TAC Cup containing some dominant key forwards and preventing them from having their usual influence on the outcome.
Strength and athleticism –Marchbank has excellent closing speed and the ability to shutdown opposition key forwards, he moves fluidly in general play and moves well with ball in hand occasionally showing he can take on the game, has a good leap and good endurance by position. He also has the strength to match and mostly beat his opponents 1v1 in the contest.
Versatility – In addition to playing key defence Marchbank can also be used up forward and prove an effective marking target with his work on the lead particularly impressive, timing his leads well and read the flight of the ball well. Marchbank is also not limited to playing deep in defence and also looks capable when pushing up the ground.Weaknesses:Footskills –Footskills overall are below average but not unworkable. His kicks are relatively imprecise and at times lacks consistency. His kicks are not overly penetrating or damaging either. His vision is limited mostly failing to identify damaging options out of the back half by foot. His decision making ability also is lacking and he can pick the wrong and sometimes unsound options coming out of the back half.

Lack of x-factor – Not that it is a problem but Marchbank is not a highlight reel player who will do anything overly eye-catching offensively that will catch your eye.
Injury prone? - Marchbank while he played all six U18 Championships games this season has only played the four TAC Cup games this year and two in 2013 due to injury. What I expect will improve:I anticipate Marchbank in the most part to improve both as a shutdown key defender but also offensively I expect he continues to improve as a 1v1 and intercept marking defender. Footskills while likely never brilliant can be ironed out.
Who he can become?I see Marchbank as a similar level talent to Ted Richards and similarly a key defender who can beat his direct opponent but also take some intercept marks. When will he be ready to play?Marchbank has the ability from season two to start to get a taste for it but by season three I see him pushing for regular senior selection. How to best utilise him?Marchbank is best used at full back.
Interpretation of his numbers: Strong numbers for a key defender through the U18 Championships particularly where he did an excellent job limiting the impact of his direct opponents and keeping them from achieving their usual numbers while also achieving strong numbers himself. Disposal and mark numbers are very good by position suggesting he is also getting involved as a rebounder. The primary query is disposal efficiency and specifically kicking efficiency which should be higher given he is not overly damaging by foot.
Pick 15 - Gold Coast: Caleb Marchbank (Vic Country, Intelligent key defender)

193 cm, 85 kg, 7/12/96
Range: Top 20
Style: Brian Lake
Comparison: Jarrad Waite (as a defender)

Off the back of an excellent championships, Marchbank has bolted up the order. A key position defender who can swing forward, his one on one ability is the best in the draft. His positioning within a contested and ability to move away his direct opponent and take the grab is elite. If he cannot win he more often than not neutralises. He's also got a good read of the ball in flight which allows him to be a genuine intercept option and picks the right time to zone off. He has the runs on the board with his opponents often shut out of games and his numbers read well.

While he does have those runs on the board I can't help but worry about what kind of defender he'll be at the top level. At 193cm he's likely not going to be a #1 defender yet athletically he is average at best. His agility is ordinary and could well lead to him losing ground contests and his acceleration and pace are okay at best. An athletic forward could create real separation on him. His disposal does the job but he's not someone who's going to create real drive out of defence. While his disposals are rarely terrible, they also are rarely noteworthy.

Right now Marchbank is a bit of a one trick pony with his intercept and one on one game excellent but the jury is still out on the other aspects of his defensive game. Offensively he isn't a weapon. He projects as a poor man's Brian Lake with his intercept and one on one ability not dissimilar and he too can swing forward and have an impact. He just seems to lake the x-factor and ability to really be that wall that Lake can be in defence and is also a little less athletic. He could be ready in season two but it will be three to four seasons before he really imposes himself.

Twomey
Back injuries have curtailed some of Marchbank's development in previous years, but he has shown exciting signs through the year. The mobile key position prospect is at his best as a defender but can be used in attack as well, where his marking on the lead is a trait. A knee injury has kept him out in recent weeks.

Has had injuries in the past but can run at the ball, lead and mark and do it at both ends of the ground. Looked more natural early in the championships as a versatile defender, but showed he was comfortable enough with a move forward later on. Is competitive, mobile and reads the ball well in the air.

10: Caleb Marchbank (193cm, Murray Bushrangers): Hasn’t done his chances any harm in the championships and is athletic enough to play most positions.

Sorry if I'm a bit slow, but the fact that the cats now have the crows pick, and suddenly have a plethora of talls, is it most likely we will now get a choice of KPP if we so chose?

Looks like one of Durdin, Goddard (sounds like we will take either of those) or Marchbank will fall to us. Just depends on whether they consider Marchbank best available if he is the only one left.

I wonder if that move was to get above West Coast and us, with a view to perhaps getting Pickett.

Personally I hope Durdin slips, he seems to be the better forward out of Durdin/Marchbank/Goddard.

Im not professing to know better, but I liked the write up on Goddard and his confidence/arrogance. I sometimes feel we have a few too many itnroverts at our club.

I think that Wingard comes across as the most arrogant self conceited piece of shit, but I think it also makes him such a great player, because he clearly has so much self belief.

Oh, for sure. I love supreme arrogance; if you are a star, say so.
If there was an Aker in the draft nobody would overlook him.

True we may not delist him. I doubt Freo would get someone better as a third round. I still don't understand why clubs need to delist three players.

De listing 1 player to go to the draft should be fine. A team with strong depth basically has to cull someone because two players retired that year and they couldn't land a free agent or complete a decent trade with another club.
