To be fair the player you see tonight is a far different "beast" to the skinny, undeveloped player that we originally drafted, and he was certainly being developed nicely by the AFC when he up and decided he didn't like the person he was becoming away from his family and friends.

Jack played 2 games in his first season, Sam Reid a similar player in build and from the same draft played 1 game.

Jack played 12 games in his 2nd year.

Jake Carlisle also from the same draft played 3 games in his first season and 7 in his second season.

John Butcher from the same draft played 0 games in his first season and 4 in his second.

Aaron Black from the same draft played 0 games in his first season and 1 in his second.

Not much the AFC could do about that in all fairness with the system the way it was set up, came down to a "draft" amongst the SANFL clubs was my understanding......though I doubt in Gunston's case even if we had the "current" system with a side in the SANFL I seriously doubt he would have stayed given his privileged background I believe he was always leaving as soon as he could.

Why would you compare him with the players you have listed. He's much better than all the players you mentioned. Blind Freddie could tell from day one the kid had enormous talent.

Half his games came after Neil got sacked and suddenly he was in the team.

What I think is that he'd already decided he wanted to leave by that stage.

Are we the only club to drop a youngster (Davis) the week after he received the weekly rising star nomination.

That still does not excuse the one size fits all attitude. Might as well had someone screaming at him " you're in the Army now son"

We could request transfers - he should have been sent to Norwood or Sturt and we might have had a slim chance of retaining him.

Sorry I agree with Bicks here. Guston was always going, like Anthony Rocca before him they spent their time as required and left.

People need to stop trying to make shit up to rationalise their position on it.

You are entitled to your opinions as why he left as am I, personally I think he was leaving as soon as he had met his draft obligations come what may.

Nowhere has he stated the reason he left was because of anything the AFC did, but I guess it just suits some to blame the club for everything.

Watching tonight makes me realise how far away we are from a flag. Really like both teams but Geelong more so. Still think they will be around the mark for a few more years

There are always those special cases, for whatever reason don't or won't change.

There are always those special cases, for whatever reason don't or won't change.
It happens in real life so why wouldn't it happen in AFL?

It might be a coincidence that we have lost three young 10 year key position players while other clubs haven't.

Tippett I can stomach losing. I don't mean the fall out but obviously we did all we could there to keep him, and then some...

With Davis and Gunston though, I think at key times when these players should have been falling in love with the club, becoming part of the furniture and deciding that they wanted to be Adelaide footballers for life they were instead yoyo-ing in and out of a losing team

The downside of having a pitiful year is, clearly, the pitiful year. The upside is that you get to invest games in the future more heavily. Because obviously the present doesn't matter. Instead we worried ONLY about the present. Obsessed by it. Fixated only on the next weekend. Davis dropped after a rising star nomination so that Scott Stevens could play in a season where we were out of the top eight... If you deliberately tried to come up with the stupidest, most club destroying, backwards, blatant sabotage of a club you'd be hard pressed to come up with something better than that.

The list of names we had playing ahead of Davis and Gunston in 2010/2011 makes for some embarrassing reading. I know Davis ended up getting injured but that only highlights the missed opportunity. Oh... and you were just about to become a regular player too. Just typical Adelaide speak - when we don't have to back it up with actions we're fine. Next season they'll get plenty of games. All he knew was that when he was available he didn't play.
