Fairly sure Cunningham is another product of the NSW academies.

Hence why I believe there is an advantage that Sydney has. However I still think their list management is the largest factor in it all, along with their culture, gameplan and probably the relative anonymity for the lesser known players creating less external pressure.

It wasn't McKay, it was Rogers et al. in the recruiting department. They took his fitness pedigree (national level middle distance runner) and one really good game against Whitfield (as a defensive tagger, most u/18's struggle with a tag) and extrapolated that into him becoming a quality player. I remember being surprised at the pick at the time as there was still some good talent available that had a better sample size, better disposal and more strings in their bow. He was an athletic small defender who wasn't worth a 2nd round pick, could have picked up a similar type later on or even in the rookie draft.
Very wrong about that, they are experienced. Hard tags are very common from U-14s upwards at club level and mandatory at rep level.

Assuming the rumour mill is right and we will be trading away Lucas, Robinson and possibly Garlett, that is 10 list changes right there, which is a pretty high number in AFL circles these days.

Add to fact that i am sure Waite is out and joining North, that is practically a quarter of the list gone.

Although i feel bad for the lads who were delisted, pleased Mick is following through on his promise to make sweeping changes through the list.

Definitely would retain Watson, big question marks over Armfield and Warnock (think Mick loves Ellard so i assume he is safe)

I don't think we'll get rid of Robinson FWIW

I'm getting very frustrated with either our recruiting and/or development (hard to tell which it is, but I pray to god that the club knows). Mclean and Warnock have been horrible mistakes as well.

The thing that p1sses me off the most is that posters on our bigfooty board are seemingly getting right it ahead of our paid recruiters.

I recall the posters in the know screaming out for Talia - we took Lucas. Then Everyone was crossing their fingers Membrey or Graham would make it to pick 35 and we took Temay. It's not clear if they will become consistent AFL players yet but they look a hell of a lot more likely than Temay.

The McLean/Lucas picks IMO were a car crash...It's like there was such disdain for how others viewed our club that we actually forgot that we did in fact need a good KPP. This pick alone had a flow on effect that I won't go into because it will melt your brain but that was an old recruiting team and the new one has been pretty damn good aside from Temay.

Experience doesn't necessarily equate to proficiency. I still maintain the belief that U/18 players struggle with hard tags as a general rule. There are still plenty of decent AFL players who struggle with them. There is also a distinct difference between being tagged at local club level than there is at national level. Furthermore in this particular instance Whitfield struggled because Temay was a 3000m runner and was able to keep up with him.

I'm not saying that players DON'T get tagged, I'm simply saying that many struggle to perform at their peak when they are.

Assuming Wood and Sheehan get promoted and Johnson stays on Rookie List (just guesses btw) that means we have 36 on senior list and just 2 rookies

I'd say there's a fair of water to go under bridge

I'm not sure of contract status' but I would imagine the club would be floating the following names at trade week ... Robinson, Lucas, Casboult, Warnock, Garlett ... That's a lot of players to potentially be traded out for players/picks. Not all will go though. Some won't get a decent return. Some maybe the club simply plan to retain. Etc.

But either way I can't recall a time where there are so many players who conceivably could be traded out. All of them with maybe the exception of Lucas have some sort of currency and even Lucas could have some currency as he's a mid and a high pick originally.

None of these guys will deliver CFC a high high pick but in a year where the draft is supposed to be even it mightn't be a bad thing to have a plethora of picks in the 25-50 range.

I think you'll find Armfield and Ellard are also being prepared for sale. Watson and Warnock will be offered up for the right price.

Ellard may be delisted but Armfield has another year to run on his contract. Warnock should be traded out too, may have to take a hit salary-wise to see him go, also has another year to run on his contract.

To be fair no one picked after Temay has announced themselves as serious AFL quality, Membrey included, though this may change with time.

Bit to like in the pre-season and rookie draft though. Freo did well with Hannath and Taberner. Credit to whoever at Hawthorn saw something in Ceglar.

Genuinely excited to see the transformation of our team in 2015 and beyond. So many new faces already and Mick has only had 1 trade/draft period.

We can't keep guys into their 20's who are stagnating. List needs to be turned over constantly and Mick knows who should be trade bait, delist and keep material.

Mick is an Ellard fan

Armfield will be the first cut end of 2015 maybe with CarraZzo joining him out the door

He may be a fan of Ellard but it's only because we're so desperately lacking small forwards. He has actually looked OK as a forward, plenty of effort to be had from him. Unless he is in the elite bracket for forward pressure and tackles inside 50 next year or kicks 25+ goals, he'll be gone.

Right now we have picks

6
24
42
60

In an 'even' draft it's good to already have 3 picks in top 42

If we can add 2-3 more in that range it could be a handy hail for the club

It's about time we got some value with later picks !!!

Melbourne may very well get pick 3 as compensation for Frawley so it could be 7, 25, 43, 61 if that eventuates.

Reckon there's a good chance 25 & 43 will be offered up for trades like last year, worked well for us.

Mick on 5AA - says he feels most sorry for Reynolds. Stiffest to get chopped. Victim of a side who didn't have a lot of senior players to play with him in VFL because of injury & left to own devices. But these days you just don't have the opportunity to keep players too long because you have to keep regenerating your list. We just needed places. In 2 or 3 year Reynolds could be very good, but we just don't have time anymore to wait.

Temmay was a 2nd rounder wasn't he?

Is it just me, or have we gotten way too many of those wrong

Correct, this remains to be seen as Rogers hasn't been there long but maybe you're right. Will see how these turn out and what we have missed out on in the next few years.

They don't all make it, pretty much agree with the delistings, must be close to our quote by now.

So if Mick is saying that Reynolds is stiff but we really need the list spots it's going to be a very very interesting off-season. We already have 7 spots available plus you'd imagine we'd have a fair few on the trade table, you'd think we'll see up to 10 new names on the list.

How many do we have to take in the draft ? Is it 3 meaning probably 2 rookie upgrades and a net 2 trades coming in minimum ?

Yeah you have to pick up 3 players from the national draft every year minimum, but I'm pretty sure you can take as many as you like.

So assuming we don't delist anymore it could look something this

National draft
Pick - 6
Pick - 25ish
Pick - 45ish
Pick - 65ish

Rookie draft
2 picks

Free Agency - Higgins?

But I've got a feeling there will be some heavy trading as well.

Also if Waite leaves thats 8 spots!!!!
