Interesting development.

From a Gold Coast perspective, it is the straw that broke the camel's back. They have sponsors that are getting a very rough deal and they have a culture (or a perception of their culture) that doesn't sit well in a professional landscape. This latest indiscretion is effectively the end of Bennell's career at the Gold Coast Suns, as he has run out of his last chance for the last time.

From another club's perspective, does this latest indiscretion actually change the situation? There are still details to come to hand but my understanding is that he was intoxicated, acting disorderly and got in an argument with a security guard (slapping the cigarette out of his hand). In the grand scheme of things, this is a minor incident. Other clubs looking at Bennell already knew of the difficulties associated with recruiting him. They already knew of the capacity for these incidents to occur. They would already have considered the ability of their environment to get the best results from an individual prone to these sorts of incidents.

My summary of this situation is that this will change nothing (or very little) for clubs interested in Bennell, but it changes A LOT for the Suns. The Suns will be forced to act, here, and that may mean they sacrifice a little in terms of what they get in return.

As such, IF we were interested in Bennell and IF we were willing to back our environment to get him right then this incident only means we are a better chance of getting him a little cheaper.

IMO we could potentially look at Bennell and GCS' end of first round pick for our first pick.

I get what all the posters have posted before this re Bennell. Yes he is a quality player on his day and yes he has some serious issues and yes the Suns will have to trade him now and probably at a loss too.

However, I don't think we as a club are in a position to take a risk on a player like Harley. We still have so many players that we need and we can't afford to lose even a second round pick on a player who clearly likes to have a good time, (don't we all). We need to nail all our draft picks to ensure that we continue on our upward trajectory. We need to recruit players that will not fill news headlines in the wrong way.

I have heard stories from people inside the AFL profession who have actually witnessed Harley in this condition before. It is very sad and I hope he gets the help that he needs otherwise he will be screwed post AFL, (and penniless too unfortunately).

A big fat resounding No from me, (although I do hope that the Suns at least get him the help he needs)...

I think the clubs Mad Monday approach highlights that we are ready to take the risk on someone like Harley. As a club, we aren't going to provide opportunities for players to play up and I really think we're one of the only clubs who would have the capability of curbing his ways.

I can't disagree with your logic, however it is still a no from me. I guess it comes down to whether the club wants to take a risk or not....

Really? I see the exact opposite. What I feel that the Club is saying very clearly to the players is off-field behaviour (as demonstrated by Bennell) will not be tolerated any more. If anyone makes a mistake in public they are history. Final warning.

No way should pick 5 be used on Bennell. He mightn't even get onto the field.

Benell needs to be out of gold coast and in melbourne with good role models around him like at StKilda. Could be a top 5 best midfielder in the comp once a club straightens him out
I'm almost certain that St Kilda used this same reasoning when they gave up their 1st round pick for Lovett.
Never again.

I can't see our club still being interested in Harley after this. Saints have been clear about drafting good characters and improving the club's culture. IMO HB's character is questionable at best. He's a great player but I feel the club will see the risk as being too big.
Very true.

Heh. Hehehehehe.

While Ray wouldn't be the worst pick for Gold Coast, they could get him for near enough nothing, and nobody will want Spencer unless it's as a rookie or a late DFA.

Bennell and both of their 20ish picks for 6, Ray and our 3rd could probably work.

I know its only scenarios but there is no way we use pick 5 in any trade for someone like Bennell. Don't know why people are even considering it. Pick 5 would only be used on a guaranteed player WITH NO BAGGAGE. That is not Bennell.

Kelly yes, Treloar yes and so on, (and no I'm not saying Treloar is coming I am using him as an example), but not Bennell...
