Surely he has been told he has to lift his work rate? Try to get him going give him a couple of late games to improve his value then trade him. Get something for him at least!

I agree with that point entirely.. But I think it's much harder to play ruck / back than other way around

Given the lack of players to do it I think you are right. Doesn't mean you shouldn't aim for one if you think they can do it

Michael Johnson should be doing it, if freo had some half decent talls

I'd like a Hartung

Very good pace. Would be nice on the outside for us!

From memory we were going to take Billy but Acres slipped to us and so we had to take him - well that is what i was told anyway. I remember there was a delay after we called Lukey Dunstan's name at 18. the brains trust had a good chat and ultimately decided on Blake Acres.

Interesting if we had taken Hartung - he would have played a lot as his pace is what we've been crying out for....

Just my opinion but dont think rice will nominate the saints because

Hes a blues supporter
His dad was dubioulsly traded by us to carlton
His dad played in a premiership with carlton
He played with sos now carlton list manager

Would be surprised he nominated us thats all
See, my reasons are more pragmatic.

He'll play from day 1 for the Blues.

He might never play for the Saints. Behind too many.

One trick pony.
Give me Acres any day of the week.

One year contract to keep him motivated. The plan was if he got off to a good start they'd look at a new deal and obviously that hasn't happened. Source: Ameet himself.

To add to this I know someone who has semi-regular contact with Spence and he says he doesn't have the personality type/drive to succeed in the AFL.

He said it was the same situation with Winmar.

there will be more of him over the years. just bad timing, i think our approach has been to build a solid foundation of contested ball winning types and then add the outside speed/flash after that

I just think our approach was and is to get the best available, and we've gotten some serious sliders over the past three year. We've drafted/traded in a decent mix of inside, key position, outside, small forward, ruck over the last couple. Just look at the mix that DMac, Hugh, Paddy, Sinclair, Payne and Lonie gives us in this past year. Year before, Billings and Templeton matched with Lukey and Mav (with Blake being both inside and out).

I think we've just been very good at identifying talent (character, potential and skill) and it was the way the cards have fallen to an extent.

I would expect/hope that Parish will fall our way at the end of this year though, partly because it adds speed and class but moreso because he is yet another best available pick with the skills and character that we've been targeting.

what if the Backman is basically tagging the ruck. E.g. Plays deep on hale in defense, and then when hale goes into the ruck, the KPD follows him into the ruck. Goddard would be perfect, I think he would destroy the 2nd ruck resting fwd and could go grow to compete in the ruck.
Ideally I'd want Goddard on the 1st/2nd forward eventually.
Just helping out with the idea of playing a def/ruck

Also if the sub rule gets abolished. Holmes could be a seriously elite centre bounce ruckman with his leap.

On Spence, I certainly get the feeling he's on borrowed time. Just hasn't progressed at all since basically his first few games for Sandy in his first year with us and I don't think Richo would have a lot of patience for those who aren't wiling to put in the GREAT EFFORT that he demands all game every game.

I posted this in the resurrected thread, but this one gets more traffic and I'd be interested to see others' thoughts...

Realistically, delistings are forecast a bit - you don't get too many shocks - so anyone OOC this year and the oldies are the ones in the gun. Let's look at them;

Joe Baker-Thomas: potentially a rookie contract, but is still a fair way off. Gone.

Sean Dempster: has previously indicated this will be his last year. Borderline.

Sam Fisher: form excellent, body still an issue. Safe if he wants to be.

Sam Gilbert: still useful. Maybe trade bait, but likely to stay on. Safe.

Jason Holmes: has shown plenty at Sandringham. Will be formally listed IMO. Safe as houses.

Dan Markworth: talented but cursed. May be saved by age and the apparent shallowness of the draft. Safe.

Darren Minchington: showed enough against the Dees to earn a new deal. Safe IMO.

Brenton Payne: will be given another year as a rookie. Has talent. Safe.

Lewis Pierce: still very young and has shown a bit, but behind three others. Potentially rookie re-list. Borderline.

Farren Ray: you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Safe.

Ahmed Saad: will survive comfortably, only question is on which list. Safe.

Adam Schneider: form is solid but has openly said this is his last year. Gone.

Tom Simpkin: made it 30 years too late. Willing, but has been superseded. Gone.

Jack Sinclair: upgrade guaranteed. safer than safe with a safety vest and a cup full of safe sauce. Did I say safe?

Arryn Siposs: has plenty of talent, but injury-prone and apparently lazy. Will he survive? Borderline.

Spencer White: I hope the penny drops, but the jungle drums are beating. Gone.

So for those keeping score, that's one gone from the Rookie list - they don't 'count' as far as the draft goes - two definitely gone IMO from the main List and another three more on the precipice, though for different reasons.

We're obligated to take 3 picks in the ND (I think), and that's all I think we'll do. A bit will probably depend on whether we trade someone in again.

Thoughts?

Oh I don't disagree with you, just a sliding doors moment I guess. Acres more skillful

Someone once told mean interesting what if, Bartel v one of the Clarkes (was it X?) and Ball v Judd. Had we taken the other bloke each time - those two switches would have netted us 3 or 4 premierships easily in the noughties I have no doubt. Intersting but ultimately redundant as we grabbed who we grabbed but still....

If we were giving our delistings as of next week I would have to go: Spencer, Simpkin, Siposs, Markworth, Schneider.

If I had to pick which order I feel most comfortable with delisting first I would go: Simpkin, Schneider, Siposs, Markworth, Spencer.

No doubt Spencer is talented but FFS it is not nearly enough in high level sport!

Schneider is only in the rookie list so won't open up any spots on the list. What we could so though is use the rookie spots left by Schneider and Sinclair to move a couple of guys from our main list.

Hence 'at this point'...

I know it's four years and yet to debut but it'd be one hell of a cruel call to give Dan Markworth the flick. A very intelligent kid who is desperate to make it, I hope he finishes off year well at Sandringham.
He's a 191cm, lightning quick wingman, if his body holds up I'd like to think he gets one last shot in 2016.

Yup. Can play a Gunston-like role too, as evidenced by being played at CHF in the intraclub.

Really hope he gets a shot.

He was showing some really good signs in match simulation as a high half forward over pre season.
I think if he ever gets some luck with his body he can really be a player for us.

I still think it'll only be:

3 drafted, 1 traded and 1 upgraded at this stage.

of course, as Defacto says, that is without us trading out anybody. Even if this was the case, it would make sense to move up the draft order or bring in another quality young player via trade.

could also be re-rookied...a shallow draft might also mean a very weak rookie draft.

To me the guys in the most danger are Simpkin, Siposs and Markworth. Then Curren, Saunders and Spencer probably in the next line of fire. Fisher and Gilbert both one major injury from Judding. Same with Rooey.
