The comparison a couple of draftees available @ 5 have to Luke Hodge is concerning.

As Hodge holds onto his 4th premiership cup, remember his selection got to Hawthorn via a trade involving key position players.

Freo recruiting staff then wouldn't have compared to ours now, but it's even more incentive to do anything to keep our hands on pick 5.

Thats why the Ryder comparison is stupid. Port only had pick 17 - you can't give what you don't have.

Thanks, most have been constructive. Except Joffa - Dude you need to chill out a little

Bullshit. They had other currency that they could have given. Players. But they were ruled out in much the same way pick 5 will be.

He was the AA U/18 ruckman yeah?
Sounds like he is very athletic.
How good is he?

Love this kid. I hope he gets to us. He will be very exciting, probably a project player but the rewards will be huge, the Sudanese kids have a pretty special athleticism if you were to generalise and Goch has plenty of that. Great hands and great below his knees for his height.

Thoughts on be brave and drafting Wayne Milera at pick 5. He's a draft bolter who would fit our needs perfectly IMO.

He's good but you would have to have balls like boulders to call him out at 5.

No. Most people say 'we need to keep pick 5 regardless'. I'm curious what THEY think they'll give up.
I've read the downgrade picks but that requires another club and is far from a done thing.

I've said it before and I'll ask it again. What would you want from the saints if Carlisle was:
- contracted
- border line all australian
- came close to winning your B&F
You blokes would want picks 1 and 2!!
That is why you won't get pick 5. He simply isn't worth it given the current array of circumstances. Even Dangerfield may go for a group of picks outside the top 10.

Carlisle is not Chris Judd, he's not Dayne Beams, you will not get a top 10 pick for him.

Any ITK's able to give us an idea of how far into negotiations we are for JC? Would we hope for it to resolve this week, or will it drag into next week? Would be nice to put it to bed early

I can see it dragging into the second last to last day. Hopefully the Freeman deal will be done a bit quicker though.

I agree with a lot of people on this board that 5 is too much for JC and 24 won't cut it, so we need to find a pick in the teens or 5 will go.

The most ideal, and somewhat realistic scenario from a Saints perspective is this:

1) Carlisle > 2015 & 2016 2nd Round Picks
2) Freeman > 2015 3rd Round Pick (after we have done the Carlisle trade so we dont have a 2nd Round Pick to give)

Draft:
1st Round: Mathieson/Francis/Parish
4th Round: Rice
5th Round: Sinclair upgrade

In: Carlisle, Freeman, Mathieson/Francis/Parish, Rice, Sinclair

Out: White, Simpkin, Siposs, Markworth, Ray (Rookie?)

If we go into deficit with Rice it only impacts the same rounds pick the next year so wont have a huge effect on us. Likewise if Ray finds a new home, hopefully that pick will allow us to have no deficit.

Some tough calls will need to be made next year on our young players again - Saunders, Ross, Murdoch, Curren, etc.

I can see it dragging into the second last to last day. Hopefully the Freeman deal will be done a bit quicker though.

Thanks mg. hope you're wrong but I sense you're probably right

I don't really get this line of thought. That might be what he's worth in total value, but there are other ways to make up the value than finding pick worth exactly that amount.

Forgive me if I dont take the advice of an Essendon troll on the St.Kilda board.

Explain to me one thing I said that was not factually correct.

I will take your silence as an admission that you cant.

Well then you have to give up something to get him, and I've not heard one person say that a second round would or should be enough - except in here.
You guys are funny. Every single media commentator has said it has to involve pick 5 and yet in here you s****** away as if we're delusional for thinking the same.
You can't think you'll pick up 2 high quality players, both of which you really want and need, and think you'll give up nothing to get them.
We're s******ing at your supporters believing you will have your hands on Pick 5. If Pick 5 is utilised to get the deal done, it sure as hell won't be going to you.

- He's out of contract
- Nominated a club
- Laments your club
- Failed to finish in your top 10 B'n'F, in fact only achieved this once - 2 YEARS AGO
- Never been an AA

On what planet is he worth pick 5 straight? Keep in mind it is your list manager who has been quoted as saying he's not interested in any deal that doesn't end up with 5 to your club. Unreasonable, no?

I think most of this board has accepted that Pick 5 may have to be used in someway using a downgrade of picks, possibly with teams like Adelaide or Fremantle. But with this being a discussion forum and zero action happening of course we're looking at ways to create the ideal situation - keep 5 and get Carlisle, which will almost certainly involve trading Hickey - something media simpletons have not clued onto.

And on Freeman, Collingwood are in the weakest position of them all.
Nathan has already walked out. Nominated a club. Played 2 hours of football in 2 seasons, and will have a $300k price on his head. With him most likely refusing to do medicals at any other club, why should Collingwood be getting anything more than a 3rd rounder? 2nd rounder would be a gesture of our good will and future trading relations as we could easily offer a take it or leave low ball offer and walk him to the PSD. Freeman is irrelevant to the Carlisle situation, we do not need help to get that deal done, so why Bombers posters are bringing him into the equation i have no idea.

Yes and maybe not.
Interesting comment! What do you rate more important- getting someone like Matho or getting Carlisle?

Even if trades involving 5 happen, what do you think the chances are we still get Matho?

Hopefully that makes sense.

I'd only say yes if we shed some rucks in the trade period, can't carry to many of them on the list

Just watched his highlights on youtube. Looks absolutely unbelievable. Does it all. Inside outside. Kicks goals. Lays tackles.

Kicked 5 in a senior SANFL match. Not many 17yo midfielders (he was 17 at the time) have done that ever. Probably in 100 years.

You would want to make sure he wasn't one that ran home at the first opportunity. Terry was promising too but couldn't handle being along way from home. Wayne's skills are sublime though.

I've got a feeling Rice is going to pick the Saints as his number one option. The fact that he is even considering us is a pat on the back for the club and embarrassing for the Blues considering his old man won a flag there and he's been a Blues supporter his whole life.

Might be a good cheap pick up if we do land him.

Because you are getting back 7 and keeping your other picks.
What is the incentive for the filth to trade up 2 places when that pick will be sent to GWS anyway?

If they were keeping it & there was a player they specifically wanted who would only be available in the top 5 them maybe....

We need to get Carlisle, if we believe that our window opens in say 3 years then he just sets us up. You lock him in and develop Hugh and Paddy and things are looking good.
The whole Carlisle trade is up in the air in regards to what we give up, we won't be ripped off but we will trade for him, unless negotiations totally break down the PSD is not an option (unfortunately IMO).
There's a small chance that IF we trade out 5 we could still get who we want at 5 a little later on in draft.

I think a bit of a comparison from outside the square is needed to bring in some perspective.
If we use the analogy of Essendon's position re: Carlisle as someone facing sentencing for a crime they've admitted guilt, one that attracts a sentence of 10-15 yrs
The judge (StK.) doesn't have too much room to move and must apply a hefty sentence in that range but can take some consideration they pleaded guilty. (Say us giving 24 & a player)
The judge could give the maximum just because they're in a bad mood (us offering 3rd rounder)
As sentencing begins, if the defendant (Ess) says "I can dob in some of my co conspirators and you must give me a reduction" the judge says "Too late".
That's Ess demanding pick 5.
True to form, at that point the defendant will bang the dock with their fist and demand a retrial.
The appeal court (AFL mediation) will produce the same result.
I guess it's at that point the brown paper bags from dodgy circles appear!

Over 40 years on this earth.......Just once Saints......PLEASE!
