Reading the O'Meara situation, someone reckons that Hawks traded into 10 so they can draft O'Maera with it if they have to in the national draft.

The thing about the national draft strategy is that a player can nominate their contract, but if a club is able and willing to match what he puts on the table, he is bound by the AFL to go there and play out his contract.

Remember midway in the year when someone said that Hinkley was up on the Gold Coast? I said you wouldn't make that trip during the season unless you were wanting to talk to a gun player like O'Maera.

What if O'Maera just wants out of Queensland, and nominated Melbourne to please his girlfriend, but if a deal can't be done in trade week he is quite happy to come to Port and reunite with Dixon and Hinkley and the girlfriend will have to deal with it because those are the AFL rules?

Not saying a deal won't be done (it will be), but hypothetically: would we select him with 9?

You would hate yourself for doing it but it's to good a deal to pass up. If it's done for 9 and not future picks it's a deal

I still have no issues with what we paid for Dixon.

The shemozzle which is our list has blame elsewhere.
Agree with the first part and minor difference with the second.

I don't think our list is a shemozzle, but the way we've utilised it is.

Afl site says we are out of the 'race for vardy'. Or the race to the bottom of the sea.

Yippee!

Don't get too excited, that's based on Rucci's reporting and he has the batting average of Chris Martin when it comes to trade talk.

I'm not sure what makes Hawthorn's trading so good, other than they've been really active.

They've moved on Sam Mitchell effectively for pick 88, traded themselves out of the first and second round this year and next year's first (when they hand over 10 for O'Meara), unsettled Jordan Lewis by offering him for trade them backflipping. O'Meara's a walking sick note and T Mitchell is unproven as a lead midfielder. Oh and picked up flaky Vickery as a free agent.
Yeah there's a hubris there, or an ongoing desire to challenge the footy gods.
They keep rehabilitating/reinvigorating players brought in from other clubs and seem to think it will work forever. I acknowledge they've done it better than anybody and should receive a Moneyball award for clever, cheap, strategic trades. But look at Collingwood who seem to be trying the same bold approach but apart from Treloar seem to be slowly burning their list.

Don't upset me. I was happy with no Vardy.

If for some reason we aren't interested in nankervis r downie, I am working on some exchange involving ah chee and dan Currie. Think Gold Coast are getting Witts? Currie would be real and cheap backup for Ryder. just need to find a home for Lobbe. busy times. hmmm. If Goldstein leaves North then Lobbe and Hartlett would fit their list.

This Goldstein talk is very interesting. Not because I want us to trade for him (Goldstein + Ryder is overkill), but because if he moves elsewhere, suddenly there's a club out there desperate enough for a ruckman to chase Matt Lobbe.

There's a reason we've got 13 available players with zero currency. The lack of creativity over the past 4 years has been a **** up.

Having said that, I still feel we've drafted well enough. List manoeuvring has been shizen tho.

Odd, until yesterday I'd have had issues with that.

That's it :thumbsu:

Not sure how we'll end up after the trade and draft period this year but not moving on guys that were so, so types in the past few years when there was an interest in them is now hurting bad.

We really need to stop this 'feel good Club' stuff and start acting and behaving like an elite level sporting organisation that is continually striving to improve at every possible opportunity. Not hugging everybody because everyone is a good guy.

Agree, why not keep the list the same - and just work harder.:p
True, cushy contracts and a head coach who is more of a mate doesn't help. Why work harder when you can do **** all and get paid the same. Save the hard work for the final year of the contract.

Club is a ****en mess.

Wonder why we pulled out of Vardy interest
1. Failed medical
2. Matthew F@#$*@# Lobbe
3. Chris Davies offered 5 yr deal he only wants 2

This. There is no finer example of list cloggers. There's no development coming from them, they've proven they are depth at best. No doubt they'll get a two year extension each though
Even with people that would argue from the point of view of "we need mature depth may as well keep them" I'd rather give a fresh chance to two mature age state league players than keep persisting with same old regular disappointments.

I can see Wines eventually being our Dangerfield. No knowledge, just a hunch.

Most of our players have had currency at one time or another, however by playing them in the SANFL and occasionally in the AFL but in the wrong position their currency will decrease.

DBJ has currency. If it wasn't for injuries he would have been stuck in the SANFL with zero currency.

If he doesn't get games next year, once we have a full list to choose from, his currency will drop. Keep him in the SANFL for the next two years and it will go back to next to nothing.
