I reckon Fagan and Noble might come to the conclusion that we have enough draft picks in the top 25 and now we are desperately in need of some leaders. You never know, Hanley might just get us a couple of real role model footballers, I would be happy to take the Poppy and another pick in the mid to late teens for Hanley. Our club need some standard setters! Just to repeat myself again and again!
We don't have the list spots for the picks we've got without recruiting a 29 year old small forward (at least, turns 29 in Dec).

Afl.com.au has us trading for Hartung now - slightly more reasonable, but seems to me another B grader who isn't first 22 for his own club.

Sneezing at a 23rd player in the Hawthorn team of the last couple of years? He reads okay to me looking at our our elite 40 odd.

who will be the hawks gut runners for their run and spread game if Hartung goes out along with Hill to the dockers? Isaac Smith will have to cover a lot of ground in 2017.

He did play 18 games this year and 20 in 2015, if he's not best 22 he must be close? Not sure if he was injured at any point.

Might be the change of game plan and personnel that Clarkson has apparently brainstorming since his team has been beaten all year by the teams that are elite in contested situations (GWS, WB, Swans, Cats...) Might not see a spot for blokes that are permanent outside mids. His game plan has been found out. Not sure if it's the case but sounds good to me.

I think this question would be answered best by Voss the boss who knows Ainsworth personally.

Further to what tbd said earlier Biggies he is a competitive beast who plays the game hard and wants to win. His four weeks were as a result of a sloppy raised arm - technique thing. I can say he prepares himself immaculately and wants to succeed - his results in the combine with sprint and beep test are pb's. With benny there is no plan b at this stage - it is footy. He will make the most of this gift he has - he won't stuff it up.

I'm really struggling to see how we can pick up Allison or Watson this year. We currently have 5 spots with one comitted to Archie and another to Frost. Which leaves three.
Assuming we trade Hanley and 21 for 8 and put Green on the rookie list maybe? Even then, that only leaves 4 free list spots with 2 top ten and 3 top 20 picks. So we can take Allison or Watson but not both unless one slips to the rookie draft (unlikely imo).
Not sure what else we can do to get another list spot. Maybe trade Lester/Bewick for a future 4th?

I think Green is more likely gone than to accept a place on the rookie list. We could move someone like Skinner onto the rookie list given his long term injury.

We currently have 5 list spots. Green is likely gone, Hanley for a trade like you suggested and Skinner (or someone else) moved onto the rookie list makes 8 spots. Archie, Frost, pick 2, 8, 16, 19, Watson and Allison makes 8.

Taranto would be my first pic now we go at 3. I have just behind McCluggage and on par with McGrath. So my wish list with our current picks is 3: Taranto, 16: Simpkin, 19: Witherden and 21: Florent. If Simpkin is gone before our second at 16 then one of Bolton or Hayward with our pick 21 instead, 16 on Witherden and 19 for Florent. Also don't mind SPP if one of the others is gone by our picks.

really like all those picks except what about Jarrod Berry for Witherden? by all reports Berry is a great leader (something we need in spades) or do you think wouldn't be available at 19?

I would expect he would be gone before our pick 16 even. If we were to get another top pick for Hanley like 8 then maybe. Say we traded 3 and Hanley for 4 and 8 then I would go someone like scrimshaw, berry or logue. Or if we believed Taranto would be there at 8 still grab a Ainsworth or Brodie at 4.

I like Berry seems like a leader and he killed it at the combine too.
I think 3 is a bit higj for Taranto, maybe if we get a 2nd pick in the top 10 wr would entertain him.

Yeah - maybe I shouldn't try maths at 3am lol. Losing 21, Hanley and Green for a top ten gives exactly the number of spots we need for Allison, Watson and the 3 first-rounders .
Pretty sure we can't delist and re-rookie a second year player though.

The second half of the first round could go any way.

I believe Fremantle at 7 will really shape picks 9 through to 25. If Freo do not draft English, I can see English and Marshall sliding a fair bit, and this will have a domino effect on a lot of the players in our 16 to 21 draft range.

It has been mentioned by multiple posters on here that we are crying out for a superstar/franchise player. Hopefully Schache and/or Hipwood can become those guys for us but god we have lacked one since we had Browny in his prime. Akermanis was the epitome of a superstar who pulls the fans through the gates back in the glory days. We desperately need a young superstar because not only does it help on field but it helps generate buzz and excitement off field and bring fans through the gates.

Some teams with franchise players:

Suns Ablett
Dockers Fyfe
Bulldogs Bontempelli
Cats Dangerfield
Eagles Naitanui
GWS probably Cameron
Swans Buddy
Demons Hogan
Hawks Rioli

Perhaps more questionable options but players like Wingard for Port, Dusty for the Tigers, Cripps for the Blues, Betts for the Crows are all guys who contribute A grade performances on field and bring fans through the gates. I think the Saints and North are probably lacking that "franchise player" like us. If we were a better side Zorko might belong in this conversation.

Anyway we need a player who oozes star factor. Ben Ainsworth is that man in my opinion.

"Andy McGrath just ran 10.95 over 100 metres at school athletics meet. Elite pace. No.1 contender." - Cal Twomey

I'm a huge fan of Ainsworth but I really hope the recruiters know what they're doing, thats Gary Rohan pace. There are probably less than 10 players in the AFL that can run at that pace.

Also won the 110 hurdles in about 13.94.

As far as getting bums through the gates and pure star qualities.
I would probably nearly put "Eddie Betts" at the top of that list.

I'd be absolutely astounded if there were more than 3-4 AFL players who could run sub-11 for 100m without specifically training for it, and quite possibly none.
