Usually I rate Brett Anderson's draft analysis really highly (probably only second to Emma Quayle) but this year he seems a bit off...

Anderson has gotten pretty good mail the last couple of year for who was going to do what.

I have never really rated his player assessment skills. Twomey has improved. I am not sure Anderson has.

One reason why I am putting a bit of less store in these guys this year is that they do not have nearly as good information for non-Victorian teams and the Victorian teams have very few first round picks. There will be more guessing than usual as seen by their obsession with Bowes getting bid on at 2 or 3 nws it was never happening.

i seriously think its very very unlikely we will take someone like shai bolton, would think we are going for safer picks (ps lets not start a debate about indigenous talent etc etc )

Hawks during Fagan's time did pretty well with Indigenous talent.. Also think the agility, creativity and natural fast twitch athletes that Indigenous boys tend to be, is exactly what we need. I would be more than happy to use 21/22 on Cedric Cox and Shai Bolton.

I agree with Brett Anderson with Scrimshaw. He has massive up side. Looks really classy and at 194cm he has the x factor like the Bont. Obviously he has to put some weight on and overcome injuries but any side that gets this kid could have a jet in a few years.

If McCluggage some how fell to us at pick 3 that would be a massive win. The kid is going to be an A grader. Ainsworth will be a star as well and plays round 1 next year for whoever selects him. Think McCluggage has a higher ceiling but either players gets you a star in the making.

Also did anyone notice that Cal Twomey's updated Phantom Draft today he mentioned Witherden is a chance to go to the Lions with their second pick at 15. That pick actually belongs to the GWS. We have the next pick. Did he let out a little secret by accident? When do we find out about any potential Giants punishment?

Club could do with a potential 'excitement machine' as well,it's been a while..

Really want Battle at the Lions. Would be amazing as a third tall behind Schache and Hipwood IMO and will allow our three talls to all have different game styles to complement each other. I wonder if Hipwood could be groomed for that forward-ruck role?
Respectfully disagree - every year I have a look for players that I actually think won't make it (acknowledging I am far from a draft expert!!) and he is on that list along with Scrimshaw.
I just don't think he has the right combo of attributes to compensate for his lack of size. I am always wary of a player that played either KPD or KPF as a junior but is undersize to play that role at AFL level. Lower successful transition rate IMO.

Of course he could go on to have a glittering career but I just don't see it myself (but I guess that is what we have recruiters for!)

Really? Elite endurance, great kick, excellent leading patterns, strong grab, ground skills good for a taller bloke... I think he will be a perfect third tall that works up the ground in the mould of Gunston and Lynch (Crows). His only knock on him is that he isn't Key position height which is why almost everyone ha him earmarked for a third tall role instead.

Harsh on Scrimshaw. I wrote earlier about knowing someone who plays for sandringham dragons, he said Scrimshaw is probably their best player along with McGrath and Setterfield, rates Scrimshaw and Setterfield higher than McGrath. Reckons his lack of exposure due to injuries hurt him, but reckons he's an absolute jet and that if anyone wins a brownlow from Sandy it's Scrimshaw or Setterfield.

More than happy to acknowledge with Scrimshaw that I haven't seen a particularly significant body of his work, I guess I just haven't seen what the majority of others obviously have! What I have seen has left me very much underwhelmed.

If we draft either Scrimshaw (unlikely given his projected draft range) or Battle I will be more than happy to be proven wrong though!

Yeah I rate Scrimshaw highly from what I've heard and what I've seen. Mock drafts have had him around that 10-15 mark for most o the year but I think he should be around 5 mark. Question marks on his ability to play midfield but if he can improve his contested ability and gain some size I think we could possibly have the best player from the draft. I've heard he is a bit mentally fragile though whatever that may mean.

this is a compilation of a lot of phantom drafts, some BF and some not.

Recruitment Manager Stephen Conole previews the 2016 Draft. Here are the questions he answers:

  • 0:30 - What’s on at the moment?
  • 0:50 - What happens between now and the draft?
  • 1:30 - Is your ranking locked in or still a work in progress?
  • 1:50 - What are the key attributes that we’re after at this year's draft?
  • 2:30 - What was the brief at the start of the year, and has it changed throughout the year?
  • 3:40 - Has the change within the footy department changed our recruitment strategy at all?
  • 4:20 - Where do you see the balance between drafting to fill a need and drafting for talent?
  • 5:15 - Is our Draft focus on what we need or on talent?
  • 5:50 - Are draftees more ready for AFL these days? And does that mean we look to fill short term needs?
  • 7:00 - The potential go home risk, how important is that to our planning?
  • 8:30 - Where is the line between talent and character?
  • 9:45 - Do you ever consider relationships draftees have with current players?
  • 10:55 - Is the current intention to fill all six spots on Draft night?
  • 11:25 - How many Rookie spots are there currently on the Club’s list?
  • 12:00 - What are the home visits like?
  • 13:00 - What’s your approach for draft interviews?
  • 14:33 - How do you rate this year’s draft class?
  • 16:20 - Will there be many surprises in the top 30?
  • 18:00 - How is the pace of draft night?
  • 19:45 - Last year’s draftees, how are they developing?
  • 21:03 - What’s Stephen’s involvement with the draftees after draft night?
  • 21:55 - How many Hyundai Help for Kids Academy players are possibilities of being picked up in this year’s draft?
  • 24:40 - How much does what we have in our Academy next year, impact our draft this year?

I'm really hoping for a slider and a more speculative pick for our second round picks. Ainsworth, Berry and Witherden would be great allowing us to use our 4th pick on someone like Bolton or Parfitt.

half way through, very interesting when Conole was asked by Fay - (not Verbatim) there are a lot of PD out there but there seems to be a top 30 or so consensus, will our top 4 picks more than likely come from that 30?

answer- pick 3 and 16 will more than likely be in there, although picks 21/22 could be a surprise, there are a couple we are interested in that don't seem to get much of a mention.

was sheepish, a surprise definitely coming, it will be a fascinating week of speculation on BF. can't wait for next friday.

my current possibilities as the smokie- Brandan Parfitt, Jordan Ridley, Isaac Cumming, Zac Fisher.

I can't remember the exact wording but Brett Anderson said in a tweet that he'd heard Jack Graham mentioned in relation to us.

If Fagan is looking to bring in some "Hawthorn type" players (in this instance - Half-Back with goods skills) .... then Ridley fits the bill.
He is definitely in my thinking around the two 2nd Rnd picks ...(FWIW).

ps I have 3 of the 4 as better than "Smokies" at 21/22 - for me, Fisher would be the smokie if taken here.

Just had a read of this live draft chat with Twomey. Nothing really new but a few noteworthy things in regards to the Lions was that he doesn't think Florent will be coming to us and he reckons we'll rate some prospects higher than Cedric Cox in that 16-22 range. He thinks we'd go McCluggage over Ainsworth if presented with a choice and he thinks Daniel Venables is on our radar.

Re: him being mentally fragile- the bloke who I was talking to reckons he's quite up himself.

Okay my rankings are up on the Drafting and Trading board for anyone with a couple of hours to kill.

I note the conversations on Battle and Scrimshaw. Anyone interested in why they might not make it should have a look at my write ups. I am in the doubtful category and have them at 46 and 31 from memory.

Rolls, Dennis and Bertolli-Simmonds onto the rookie list would be a good result then.
