The thing is, Knightmare doesn't hide his rating the academy kids higher. He's explained this in the past and why.

His ratings are also how he rates kids and he explains they are mix of how he see the kids and what he hears from recruiters and other draft watchers such as Emma Quayle and Twomey. His last rating is where he usually tries to predict the draft.

Right now he's just rating the kids on how he sees them and from what he hears from other recruiters. He's said as much, because he hasn't seen all the kids play yet. He's even said he hasn't seen all the div two games on tape/you tube yet, so if he's got a lot of northern academy kids rated high, I bet it's from what he's hearing from (club) recruiters who have watched the div two games.

I've missed that. What's the rationale?

I personally dont agree with that. Whats the point in gaining yet another forward (Hammelman, Hipwood, Close, Freeman, Schache, Walker and next year Ballenden) when we don't have enough space in the forward lines as it is. Our reserves team is too tall as well.

We need to draft an elite midfielder which we need. Even if Marshall is 1 or 2 spots ahead of the others.

Yup I agree. If there was a tall defender rated similar to Weitering, That's who I would be championing. But there isn't a defender like that in this years draft. Also Ballenden is supposedly rated higher than any of the KPF's in this years draft. I'd definitely be targeting a midfielder with SPS and McGluggage at the top of my wish list. There isn't a highly rated ball winning bull midfielder so it's a choice between two classy midfielders who can impact the score board.

I've missed that. What's the rationale?

They've had more professional coaching, often times played in the NEAFL against men and proven themselves somewhat more than kids who have just played in TAC. And they're often further along in their development.

It was reading this that I asked the question in the past how much involvement with the club do our academy kids get, especially the 18 year olds. Because up here in QLD most kids finish school at 17 years of age, so most of our draft eligible kids should be playing for the Lions NEAFL side all season, except for their involvement in the div one and two championships.

I would personally probably prefer a midfielder but in my opinion you don't muck around with a top 5 draft pick. You simply have to go best available. Imagine if we passed on Todd Marshall to select a midfielder on a needs basis and Marshall ends up being a Jeremy Cameron tier talent and the midfielder we draft turns out to be a Toby Greene tier talent? Anyway it is all a moot point at this stage. Still a long way too go until the draft and at this very early stage the number 1 player on my wish list is still Sam Petrevski-Seton.

I like the post. From what I haven seen of Todd Marshall,I think he could be something special, hence GWS trying to get him,in their academy. He may or may not turn out to be a star but if he turns out to be a star what a tantalising forward line with schache and Marshall.sps is also from what I have seen a super talent. It would be nice to see Brisbane trade aggressively to get as many early picks as possible. If thru trade ,we end up with SPS and Marshall before any other any other picks, I would personally see that as not only a win for the club and a badly needed injection of hope for its supporters but most importantly a look to the future and the building towards something special for the club and ultimately its goal, finals / grand finals.

Don't forget we are poised to pick up Ballenden next year and have Hipwood and Skinner in the wings. GWS could afford to pick whoever they wanted as they had so much draft resource at their disposal. We don't. If we over spend on key positions (which are important but take up no more than 1/3 of the team), our other areas will be deficient and our list will continue to be unbalanced.

Our top pick should be able to land someone like SPS, McCluggage or Brodie. Our list could do with any one of them.

Marshall is a good kid but he is not a supreme talent that we should consider taking. It does not make sense for our list.

The next 6 weeks (Nationals) will tell us more I guess - but agree, not a massive need for us with Ballenden likely to come in and compliment Schache, Hipwood, Freeman, McStay (when required) and Hammelmann all in the mix moving forward :thumbsu:

Our greatest needs for mine are 1. Quality half back 2. Medium sized forward goalkicker 3. Lock down small defender

Best available is probably the go but I wouldn't want to take a small forward at pick 2 or 3. We need elite midfield or halfback.

I'm dreaming we can snatch a sliding Jy Simpkin (possible), or a sliding Parfitt (less likely) with a later pick, after nabbing an elite talent with our top pick, and amassing enough points for our academy kids :)

He seems to have jumped way up the peoples order all of a sudden. Thought he was considered in the teens by most people a few weeks back.

Has a beautiful kick, is agile and moves remarkably well for a guy his size, so people are noticing. Wondering if his frame is a bit slight though?

unless we end up with pick 1 and todd marshall is regarded as the consensus number 1 talent in the draft, i would be going for the best mid in the draft ie. SPS/McGluggage/brodie. if we did end up with pick 1 i would also be bidding on other clubs academy talent eg. bowes/setterfield as long as they are rated that high, that way it makes the points required for allison/rolls/watson a bit less and we may be able to grab another slider ah la beast mode.

with ballenden the following year very highly rated we should have the key forwards covered for the future.

Allies team for the weekend named - Watson, Himmelberg, Rolls in defence. Allison and Ballenden on the bench

How is Josh Battle going as the other top rated forward Quigley? I'm interested to hear your appraisal on him, and if he is a 'surer' thing than say Marshall

Understand where u r coming from.ballenden is still to early to call.let,s see his progress next year.hipwood I would like playing down back.l know there will be people, who will say what the f..k,but I would be prepared for the right offers to let freeman go for the right price and that includes hammelmann. Up forward I would want guys who can mark well and hit the scoreboard,I feel Schache and Marshall r the two . In terms of Marshall, I am basing my opinion on what I have seen of him. I really like his marking ability and his kicking.its a no brainer as to why , gsw wanted in him in their academy going by the footage.i also agree with 13 beast regards jy Simpkin another player I really like who may slide due to injury.

I would have Marshall higher atm but both would be around the 10 mark. Wait and see how they go at the Champs but I am not breaking the bank to take either of them.

Can I ask, what do you think the right price would be?

I have a long term view.players who will be around when Schache unlocks his full potential .if Fremantle finish last, a hypothetical scenario I know .Freeman I would package with another player (remember this is pick 1 as it stands )Rocky or green or Hanley and swap of latter picks.A package is the only way freeman would get us anything decent.i would be open minded in any trade thou.if this did pan out that would leave us with picks 1 and 3 based on current standings

Parfitt and Spargo not getting picked for the first game seems odd to me.
Spargo, in particular. Is a gun. Must be injury surely.

I had not even noticed that Settlefield was also missing. Anyway just found out that Spargo, Settlefield and Long are all missing the first few games due to school commitments. Maybe they actually take their schooling seriously. Heaven forfend.

Did you just suggest we trade Rocky or Hanley?

How many players from that Allies side are likely to be drafted to their respective academy clubs?
Not all the academy kids are tied to the academy they are part of. As has been mentioned many times, Marshall and Himmelberg can be drafted by anyone as they haven't spent enough time in their academy.

The top kids will get picked by their respective academy team. All depends where they are bid on, if the club has enough points, if the club rates them at that spot or believes there is a better kid available at their next pick.

Yes, aware of all that, was interested in which if those Allies players are in the mix to be drafted by their respective AFL club.
