Dennis, Mason and Perry-Warren are three who might be late ND or rookie draft chances.
thanks out of those 6, which ones should make the allies squad and which ones might make it

So what will the Allies side look like? The vast majority will pick itself, the question marks are over the small defenders and small forwards. It will likely be the remaining midfielders who are rotating through those spots. Also, whether they pick many underaged players or if they focus solely on those eligible this year. And it'll be interesting to see how generous the selectors are, particularly towards the Tasmanians. Realistically, none deserve to be picked. Their MVP was a 16 year old, and I'm not sure they'll be selecting Tarryn Thomas simply because he'll be playing in the U16 Carnival later this year too.

b: Hamish Macdonald (NSW) - Declan Watson (QLD) - Jake Brown (NSW)
hb: Harry Perryman (NSW) - Harrison Macreadie (NSW) - Jamie Hampton (NT)
c: Will Setterfield (NSW) - Brad Scheer (QLD) - Josh Williams (QLD)
hf: Jacob Allison (QLD) - Zac Sproule (NSW) - Brandon Parfitt (NT)
f: Benjamin Davis (NSW) - Todd Marshall (NSW) - Mitch Maguire (NSW)
r: Max Lynch (NSW) - Jack Bowes (QLD) - Kobe Mutch (NSW)
i: Elliot Himmelberg (QLD) - Connor Byrne (NSW) - Jack Rolls (QLD) - Joel Perry Warren (QLD)

The last two spots came down to Maguire and Perry-Warren, but I can see them sneaking in. Both had good tournaments, Maguire was one of the leading goal kickers while Perry-Warren offers versatility. I went with Himmelberg in the 22 because he can play both up forward and down back, while Marshall and Sproule can rotate through the ruck to rest Lynch. They could go with a more specialist small defender ahead of Brown too, sneak a smaller name into the side in that role. Macdonald is a bit of a roughie, but he was solid as a defender and could play that more dour position.

With the 22 dominated by Queensland and NSW/ACT, the squad (I've gone with 35) could be filled out largely by the NT...

Ezekiel Frank (NT) - Ben Long (NT) - Rohan Armstrong (NT) - Lachlan McKenzie (NT) - Tony Olango (NT) - Dominic Grant (NT) - Nick Dodge (TAS) - Tarryn Thomas (TAS) - Angus Baker (NSW) - Fletcher Carroll (NSW) - Nate Dennis (QLD) - Curtis Marsden (QLD) - Daniel Charlesworth (QLD)

who are the players that are part of our academy that could be drafted this year
allison
rolls
watson
are those the only 3 or are there more

Like last year, it will come down to how many points we have to match offers on our Academy kids early on. If Allson, Rolls and Watson are all bid on inside the top 25 or 30 draft picks, that's going to chew through a lot of points, even with the 20% discount.

It's not actually too much of a problem. Assuming current draft order (and disregarding any free agency compo picks and pick movement, which won't collectively make much difference), we have picks 3, 21, 24 (St Kilda), 54 (North), 57 (our fourth) which are worth points. Assuming we use our first rounder live, that gives us the ability to match 2581 points, which would cover for example 12+28+30, 14+26+28, 16+24+26, or 18+23+24. That's assuming we don't trade down the order, which is an easy way to increase our points value. Or trade anyone out. And we can take a debt - if we take a debt matching a second round pick, it only degrades our future second rounder, so our 2017 first would still be safe.

Good to see Ballenden in. From the AFL website.

I guess it frees up the rest of the academy to play in our reserves. Probably not the worst result.

Parfitt to the lions likely?

It doesn't seem obvious how - I don't think he'll be a top 5 pick at this stage (could be wrong), and our later picks are going to be monopolized by academy guys.

This is the pitfalls of Academy selections, with All eggs in one basket. It is fine when you are pumping out Heeney, Mills, Hopper types. But when they are the next tier talent or less down I see some issues. And a great bonus for footy state teams as they get less competition for kids from their state. Lions will likely trade down picks for more lower picks again to acquire more points. They run the risk of seeing guys rated high on their board be available (slide) at original picks we had

I'm worried about lopsided teams as well. If your academy produces a bunch of skilled talls or none at all, how do you maintain balance in your list without having to use later picks and hope they work out?

I can envisage that might be a problem down the track but we're a hell of a long way from that scenario at the moment. Just getting talent of the required level is the main issue at the moment

You don't draft all the academy prospects like we did last year leaving Wagner out because he didn't suit our list.

when we could really use a Wagner type. He looks to be excelling down back for the Dees.

I don't really see much of a problem. The AFL isn't saying we have to draft our academy kids. It will always be, draft best available talent.

Sydney don't have any highly rated kids this year, so they can draft who they want.

no but it looks like the trend will be to trade down picks (ie picks in the teens to 20s for later picks)

You only look to trade down if you know you need the points because you have high end academy talent. No point trading down if there's not a need.

Aren't we going about these academy boys all wrong? We don't we do what the rest of the comp does to us, let these boys go to other sides, then once the baby sitting has been done we'll poach them back if they are decent. This approach seems to work for other clubs why not us ((:

Great comment. Play the game. We may be missing out on better talent outside Queensland because of our fear.we are recruiting based upon division 2 competition.this is where the allies team is fantastic, because we then seeing how our talent compares against the best talent from the traditional footy states.talent should be benchmarked against other talent to see the true worth.i think 3 or 4 years ago I stated the lions academy have a team in the tac cup so we could see and assess our progress in terms of talent.

Are there any mature KPD floating around the state leagues doing a good job that we could draft on the cheap while our young talls develop?
