AFL.com.au highlights of Declan Watson's game v Tas

We're going to have a serious wealth of intercept defenders - Harris, Hipwood, McStay & Watson.

His skills look pretty good! While he wasn't under a heap of pressure, that kick looked to be weighted brilliantly and his handballs were flat and precise. Pretty encouraging.

we traded down for hipwood & keays who were below what I rate as the high end talent

Traded down from where? You really need to look in to the whole dynamics of the Academy bidding system, where the kids are rated, where our picks are, and when are other clubs likely to put a bid in for our kids.

If the club had the chance to keep it's number two pick, and trade back in to the first round round, say inside the the first 10 selections, it would have. And it would still have been able to trade back in the draft for multiple lower picks to accumulate enough points to draft Keays and Hipwood. Seriously, we didn't give up anything.

I don't like getting snarky, but are you deliberately try to make some thing out of nothing? And do you have a full grasp of the bidding and points system and how it impacts early and later picks?

We kept our first round pick which we used to draft Schache. Keays and Hipwood were always highly rated with a bid expected in the early teens and another in the late teens. It didn't make sense to hold on to any pick in the second round when we knew one or two bids were coming in long before then for our academy kids, and we'd have to use those points from the second round pick to match an early bid.

We didn't lose the chance to draft a better player. And as academies use picks to match bids, the position of draft picks behind academy picks positions actually improve as the draft is now fluid. Pick number forty three doesn't remain forty three if other academy clubs have draft picks above us and have to use them to match bids.

Look at GWS this year. They are likely going to have 5 kids bid on in the first round, and will match. How many first and second round draft picks do they have? And are they likely to keep these picks or trade them for multiple later picks? Each draft pick has a points value attached to it. It makes more sense to trade early picks for multiple third round picks because they will give you more points.

When you have academy kids you want to retain, it's all about the math and the accumulation of picks behind where they are rated. As I keep saying, you don't trade draft picks that are higher than your academy kids are rated, you keep these and draft the highly rated kid from Country Victoria or where ever, and then you get a second bite of the cherry matching bids to keep your top academy kids.

Have you followed the recent discussion around Gold Coast academy prospect, Jack Bowes. He's rated as the top talent in the draft, and which ever team has the number one pick will likely bid on him. Unless GC trade up to the number one pick. Then GC can draft which ever top prospect they want. And the benefit from this, is that it pushes back the bid a team will place on Bowes which means less points GC have to use to match the bid.

Any Scott Pendlebury/Simon Black/Bob Murphy type of players coming through the draft this year? We need a bloke who just has time to spare.

We just take best available player. Whether it is an inside beast or classy user, we could use one.

I like the sound of Will Brodie or Hugh McCluggage for our first pick. Both country Victorian boys too.

If McGuane is looking for a job, he could get together with McStay and McCluggage to start a travel agency for any homesick players.

I believe we have Sam Mayes, who'd be that in a midfield role. Hasn't looked like that since he shifted down back.

Best avilable mid this year for me. Inside grunt as well as outside class is needed. Wouldnt mind a SPS type despite me banging on about needing a Wines type. Keays, Matho, Rolls, Allison and a SPS would be a good group of 5 young mids coming through.

just had a look at Knightmares latest draft power rankings on ESPN, points of note-

he now has rolls rated higher than allison, rolls at 16, allison 17. watson not mentioned in the top 30.

3 of his first 5 are GWS academy players ie. setterfield 2, perryman 4, macreadie5.

the suns have 2 in the top 8 ie. bowes 1, scheer 8.

It'a s shame but I tend to ignore his draft now because of his obvious bias in ranking academy players so high up.

Things can still change. Rolls and Allison might push top 10 after the Allies clean up with WA, SA and Vic.

Um, yeah not sure how I would feel about that with the cost/point factor to take into consideration plus can't see it happening.

You have to take into consideration that Div 2 has just finished and that is what has swayed his thinking but I do agree with you. Keays was 2/3rd in his power rankings around this time last year.

What I took most out of it is the rise of Marshall and he just might go to Freo due to their never ending need for a KPF. Might just be good enough to come to us but I'm still leaning towards mid, hello SPS!

agree on SPS although i am basing my opinions on various phantom drafters description of his playing style (elite disposal on both sides, pace to burn and x factor) and a few short highlight videos. i did ask knighmare the question today re who should we draft with our first pick before the bids come in and he said todd marshall 1st but if we would rather a mid McGluggage would be his choice.

He's done that in the past, but I don't believe he can afford to now with his new gig on ESPN. IMO, Watson not in the top 30 is hugely surprising. I've got him in my top 20. He'll be in my top 10 if he can continue with his form.

Best available with our 1st pick for sure. Whether that is a KPF in Todd Marshall or a midfielder like SPS or McCluggage wouldn't bother me.
I personally dont agree with that. Whats the point in gaining yet another forward (Hammelman, Hipwood, Close, Freeman, Schache, Walker and next year Ballenden) when we don't have enough space in the forward lines as it is. Our reserves team is too tall as well.

We need to draft an elite midfielder which we need. Even if Marshall is 1 or 2 spots ahead of the others.

The thing is, Knightmare doesn't hide his rating the academy kids higher. He's explained this in the past and why.

His ratings are also how he rates kids and he explains they are mix of how he see the kids and what he hears from recruiters and other draft watchers such as Emma Quayle and Twomey. His last rating is where he usually tries to predict the draft.

Right now he's just rating the kids on how he sees them and from what he hears from other recruiters. He's said as much, because he hasn't seen all the kids play yet. He's even said he hasn't seen all the div two games on tape/you tube yet, so if he's got a lot of northern academy kids rated high, I bet it's from what he's hearing from (club) recruiters who have watched the div two games.
