If that's the case then why would GWS essentially give us a free pick 16? Is it just the extra points they get from the trade? I suppose pick 16 would have been used up by them anyway I guess.

Probably because we wanted another pick in the first round and they wanted points, yeah.

Pick 16 and the rest of the picks are basically identical draft value in points. I think it just meant GWS don't have to worry about someone else trading pick 2 off us.

I think it shows that we don't think our academy kids will be bid very high this year unlike GWS. I wouldn't be surprised if we get picks next year for Hanley and keep Rocky and worse case get more picks next year as well, four inside 21 seems job done for me.

The names the Hawks have offered us are Langford and Poppy from my understanding.

To form part of a three way deal resulting in O'Meara to Hawthorn and Hanley to the Gold Coast?

Yuk. We better be getting a pick upgraded if we are settling for a player. 16 better become 8 at the very least.
Yeah, after we made such a deal about getting pick 16, hard to see us giving it up just for a player. Hawthorn would be robbers under that deal.

Suns have been talking up how they want players. Someone like poppy might go alright for them. Jom turned into Hanley and poppy probaby isnt bad for them. But what pick moves are needed to balance it all out im not sure.

Perhaps something like;
Hawks
Out - Poppy, 23
In - JOM

Suns
Out - JOM, 8
In - Poppy, Hanley, 16

Lions
Out - Hanley, 16
In - 8, 23.

Don't mind that although I can see the Suns hanging on to 23 and possibly giving us 30, if anything.

If Tigers are playing hard with Prestia and 6, then maybe the 16 helps that. Suns get 6 and give up 16, or maybe an early 20s pick.

Would leave us with 3 8 19 21 23. Would then hope we try package 2 of 19 21 23 up for a pick in teens. Maybe even Tigers would bite at 19 and 23 for 16.

Gets us back to 4 picks in the top 21 like we are now, but better positioned. Still dont think we will need more than 4 picks, so we could afford to pay 'overs' with that 5th pick to get the first 4 better positioned.

Teams like North, Sydney, Dogs all might bite at getting an extra pick.

I standto be corrected as often happens but at least 2 of the picks gws took off us were future trades from last year meaning they were grandfathered under the must have list spots = elligible draft picks. So i assume they can use them for points matching (ie more picks than spots) which they need this year but we dont.
The question is does the grandfathering still apply if ontraded?

If yes great deal for them as they will have 2 x top 10 bids to match.

On the trade its pretty hard to tell if it was genius or stupid, if youre not involved in the interviewing of players you dont know who would fit in well at bris - id assume the resilience testing for homesickess would be a key aspect of selection where as the draft lists we see from experts are solely talent based.

Its clearly a calculated risk by the club. Obviously in 2-3 years time it will be a hindsight job cos everyone makes the right decision now when theyve got 3 more years of info.

so everyone may as well record their opinions now for our future arguments. Lol

Port as well might be desperate to turn 9 into multiples. They havent had top end draft picks for years

It was McCluggage last week. Seriously don't get the humungous boner our board has for Ainsworth.
Really? Can play, same size as McGrath but more explosive. Fills a hole that we have with a small fwd. Dont know if it is a humongous boner, but a few of us are walking around with semis.

If we pulled the same move in some previous drafts...

2001 - we trade Luke Ball for Chris Judd and Rick Ladson (massive win)

2006 - we trade Scott Gumbleton for Lachie Hanson and Mitch Brown (moderate win)

2008 - Naitanui for Stephen Hill and Ryan Schoenmakers (loss - Naitanui a franchise player)

2009 - we trade Jack Trengove for Dustin Martin and Jasper Pittard (solid win)

There is risk but I think it's one worth taking. Whoever you take at 2 could get a navicular injury and retire after 40 games. I'll take the insurance of a second player.
