I believe you don't judge a player on one game.every player has a bad game. You have to be fair and put his performances into context, that being the fact he was injured. He screams X factor. If one player represents the struggles the lions have been thru over the years and the spirit to triumph over adversity, it is SPS. If it is true Simon Black was his favourite player and we drafted him ,I would be more than happy for the young kid to be given S Black number. Hopefully it would be an immense source of inspiration.
His style,or work rate doesn't bear any resemblance to Black ! He was not injured in that game, and he capitulated.Like the rest of the W.A team, should be carefully scrutinised. Lots of players have x factors, and they are usually no more than potential unfulfilled . There were several outstanding midfielders on show in that game and in the TAC cup final, and deservedly they have moved up the rankings.

Quigley drafted Shai Bolton with pick 21 in the BF Phantom Draft. It would be handy to add some serious pace to our team. I look at players like Johannisen and Jarman Impey and they have some serious deficiencies as footballers and yet simply due to their speed they can break games wide open in the space of 5 minutes. Late in games when the game is in the balance and we are stuck at our half back flank with the opposition players flooding the contest resulting in stoppage after stoppage having a player like Bolton who can get the ball in space and just run and break the lines would be so valuable. We really only have Zorko and Cutler on our list with that ability and even they don't quite have that top line speed that the likes of Johannisen, Impey and even Lewis Jetta have.

It's a good call. Johannisen's disposal in his Norm Smith-winning GF was absolute crap, but he definitely had an impact with his sheer line-breaking/ball carrying ability as you said. I think Cutler can have this impact for us but another line-breaker from the backhalf would be excellent for us.

Quigley went- Ainsworth, Florent, Bolton and Parfitt(smokey) and i like his rationale for all the selections. the only one at a quick glance who is still available i would like is Witherden.

I know its all a bit of fun (BigFooty Draft) but I would very underwhelmed if those were the names we called out on the actual night.
What names would satisfy or gratify you being called on the night?

Pace is just what our side needs.

Black, Akermanis, Mattthews, Dunstall.
There could be a F/S possibility on at least two of those names, however I'm sure if we dig deep enough in the draft registrations we can find some random guys with those names and call them out on the night?

I am not sure what is going on with my inability to post my write ups but I am still having issues. I managed to get the write for Florent up but not any of the others.

Anyway my rationale for what I have done is that this year is a very deep one for mids and given our need in that area I thought I would take advantage of that. At 16 I had envisaged going with Berry or SPP to add a bit of size but both were gone so I have ended up with a contingent of short guys. There is a lot of genuine quality there though and we definitely need that. On the picks:

Pick 3 - Ainsworth - we have no true small forwards and the guys we have playing up there lack genuine pace. Ainsworth is very quick and an excellent lead and good when the ball hits the ground. He will start in the forward line and as the likes of Rocky, Beams etc transition out he will pick up more and more midfield time. He is very explosive, has very clean hands and makes things happen with the ball. We need all of that in a big way.

Pick 16 - Florent - do not expect Florent to be there at this pick on draft day. Showed significant improvement over the year and his work onball at the end of the year was excellent. Short but powerful with nice ball winning ability in tight. He does not have the pace that my other picks do but he is still slippery and has good endurance which allows him to make the most of the pace he does have. He moves through traffic really nicely and is very much on a steep upward trend development wise. Think Zach Merrett.

Pick 22 - Bolton - the kid is magic and when he is around the ball things happen. Crazy agility, very clean and a real line breaker. His production has been below what you would like and he needs to improve his endurance but it is all there for him if he is willing to put in the work. Think Lewis Jetta with better ability to go into a pack and come away with the ball. He will be an impact player with a chance to be much more than that.

Pick 23 - Parfitt - has had injury issues which have inhibited him this year but he has top 5 potential. When his confidence is up he can take over a game and dominate like few others in this draft. The clips from the Champs don't do him justice. I think he will need a year in the ressies to build his game and confidence but once he does I think he will be one of the steals of this draft. He is good defensively and unlike many in our current team he does not mind a chase down. At the Champs it is worth noting that two he ran down were Rotham and Piper both of whom are considered to have close to elite speed. His disposal has been a little untidy this year but there is nothing inherently broken with his kicking and I think it is fine with a little work.

I would also be going into deficit for both Allison and Watson. Watson is just the kind of CHF we need and would be another very good intercept marking defender for us. Allison had a poor year but the upside for him is huge and his mix of size, speed and leg is the kind of think that we need to inject into our side.

Why do people get overly invested in what players are selected in what amounts to make believe? It's all a bit of fun I know, but every year I see people (and I'm not necessarily talking about people from our board) get agitated about various mock and phantom drafts. It's a curious thing.

tbh, I'm not sure why people get worked up about the real thing. Number 1 could do his ACL in his first training session and pick 50 could turn out to be a gun. The whole draft thing is completely unscientific (yet to see a peer published paper on the subject) and speculative and subjective and 'crossfingers'. It's a curious thing.

And all of the 'experts'? If you're not getting paid for your expertise then your opinion carries less weight than zero (esp journos and to a lesser extent ex-footy 'commentators. Clubs hope they have employed and paid the right experts.

That's pretty dismissive. I don't get excited by the draft either (particularly) but for those with a keener interest, it's an important part of building.

Not sure how you'd define 'scientific' but like many things, there is there is an element of probability. Like odds on a horse race, some have a better chance of success than others. Sure, any horse could break its leg at the start of a race, or find that it runs worse on city tracks than it might in the country (don't know if that's possible, but think you get the point), the point being that there is no guarantee but odds are that a super star 18 year old could be very handy as a 24 year old.
As for 'experts', there are plenty of footy fans who take a very close interest in junior footy and are quite familiar with the up & comers. Many of the amateur punters would have a better idea than a lot of what pass themselves off as "professional commentators". Some will have a very good grasp on who to watch for and others just regurgitate others' opinions, but to dismiss everyone's opinion based on whether they make a living from it is pretty ignorant.

I don't put uninformed opinions forward on players I don't know. I've seen Ainsworth play. He plays in the town I work in. I wouldn't offer my opinion on him as an AFL prospect because I don't have the expertise to assess him and don't know what is required to succeed at AFL level. Do You or anybody else on this board? Leave that to guys like...?

Even then they're much less than 100% sure. Ignorant? Okay, I don't mind that. Yourself?

I think some of the commentary on the draft lacks perspective, but none of us are professional analysts of the seniors either and yet here we are year after year discussing them. It seems arbitrary that only draftees require professional expertise to evaluate.

Well done mate.

If we get Ainsworth, Florent & Bolton - we should be happy.
However, I would go for Witherden over Parfitt. Parfitt is similar in size to Ainsworth and Bolton and I would assume the club only takes one of Bolton/Parfitt.
Kobe Mutch is probably another to look at for pick 22

I still think we're a chance for Berry as Freo would most likely draft English at pick 7

His disposal improved as the game went on and after haf time he was brilliant.

Tbh, I don't see why you're getting worked up about this. Presumably you're an expert.

Uhh...I may not be getting paid but judging from the number of times the clique has banned me, my opinion carries a lot of weight around this corner of the internet.

Always enjoy reading your write ups Quigley. If you've got a bit of spare time I'd love to read your thoughts on Jy Simpkin.
