Worth a listen - Emma Quayle Podcast

Gave me reinforced belief in the guy in charge of our Player Recruitment & Retention (especially so close to the BF Brisbane Board meltdown 2016 Draft)

Seems to be a lot more experts on bf than last year. Unless you're out there watching more than 1 or 2 games, it's a bit much to throw around statements that it won't be good enough if we get one player instead of another.

I haven't seen either of them play, but looking at the mock drafts & stat reports, Ainsworth physically seems good to go where as the other young bloke looks a bit lanky & might need a couple of seasons in the gym.

Can anyone remember what Nige Lappin's physique was like back when he got drafted? Was he a similar build to McCLuggage? Granted he's a tad taller but I'd be surprised if he was that much more developed at the same point.

I agree and disagree. Clug vs Ains - whatever. We can't lose. My concern is if we, as Console intimated, reach for one at 21 and 22. Players like Jack Graham or Tom Stewart, who most pundits have far below our picks. If the club rates them, sure, but I'd have preferred if they'd traded down rather than overpaying with an early 2nd rounder for guys who'd otherwise fall mid 3rd onwards.

Reaching for players is a concern. Would rather use those picks for players that slide. I know there were a few players around our pick that we used on Matho that we most were hopeful for and then we called out Rhys's name and it was a great way to add to our crop. Sliders not Smokies

But Weitering isn't the other option. Oliver, Parish or Francis are your other options.

Oh, I thought we were talking about a mooted no 1 pick falling to us because Carlton picked differently to what everyone expected. It's not at all the same as last year, unless you're purely talking about the stated willingness to play for us.

Skinnier would be my recollection.

Yep. I don't mind us taking a couple of risks... 4 early picks means that if we go for a high-risk, high-reward type, it may be a good move. But the ones we've been linked to at 21/22 haven't really been that...

Dodoro says Bombers will be a strong side in 2 to 3 years. Suggesting they want someone who will also be ready then. Does this make McGrath more likely than McCl.? Don't know.

yep. first 3 go for who you consider best available and the last you can take that risk/reward type. definitely don't use both 21 and 22 on the risk/reward or smokie selections IMO.

pick 3- Ainsworth/McCluggage/Taranto
pick 16- Simpkin/Berry/Florent
pick 21- Witherden/Venables/Powell-Pepper/Bolton

pick 22- Ridley/Cumming (bid)/Parfitt/Drew/Fisher

Have a look at photos of Sam Mayes at the 2012 draft. He was skinnier then McCluggage is now and he's had no trouble adding muscle to his frame. I really don't see McCluggage's size as an issue. Some rumours starting to reappear that McCluggage is the Bombers man with pick 1 again as opposed to McGrath so tomorrow night will be very interesting. McCluggage or Ainsworth it is a win win situation.

Apparently Port are very keen on Witherden with one of their 2 picks in teens, if he is there at our pick 16 we may have to take him there if we want him as I don't think he will make it to 21.

maybe, although would rather Simpkin, Berry or Florent in that order if one of them is there over Witherden, would be happy to take him though if those 3 are gone.

Yeah Port is the key to our second, third & fourth picks. What they do with 15 will make or break us. They will be confident of passing on Marshall or English at 15 and picking one of them up at 17, simply cause it's not what we need, which (should) leave them with a choice between Berry, Witherden, Gallucci, Venables, Hayward, Powell-Pepper & Graham. Best case result for us is if they look to go local with either Hayward or Graham.

Can't say I know much about Florent, but I really like Berry and Simpkin although I think they might be gone by our pick

The rookie draft is Monday. I'd love for Goddard to get through to give us another developing ruck. If he doesn't then giving Nate Dennis a year or 2 as a professional footballer might be worth a shot.
