Whatever your biases, there's little doubt we've turned into a very ordinary team in the last 2 years. Much of it can be blamed on coaching/player management but our 2016 draftees should be coming along this year or next, and that's just not happening

These are our draft pick ups from 2016

Main draft
Gallucci - on the outer
Poholke - being kind he's a solid player
Himmelburg - a tease now and then
Signorello - who?
Davis - 1 or 2 glimpses at best

Rookies
Shaw - retained for medical reasons
pass
Jarman - sentimental choice only

Losses
Lyons
Henderson

If any of the drafted players had been delisted this year it would have come at no surprise apart from Gallucci, and only because of his 1st round status not form

Compare this to our notable pickups from draft/trades in our our dark 2012/13 Tippett sanction years
Atkins, Hartigan, Callinan, Betts, Podsiadly, M Crouch, Knight, Laird (elevation), Cameron, Kelly, Graham (notable for its sh!tness). Maybe add Jenkins in 2011 if they knew Tippett was leaving the following year.

2016 is not one of Hamish's better years. I know he wanted English and Pyke asked for a fast mid rather than a ruck (not an unreasonable request) but Hamish picked the wrong guy. would English have been a much better choice than O'Brien anyway?

ED: I forgot Signorello (easily done) Have added him now

English is far more skillful footballer than O'Brien no doubt, in fact English is one of the most skillful for his height to play AFL but as a Ruckman ROB shits all over him with his follow up work, tap work, endeavour, attack on the football and contest. I don't think I'd swap especially where we're at currently.

I'm also led to believe Patrick Lipinski was our target with the Poholke pick but that cunning old fox Simon Dalrymple had other ideas pouncing far earlier than was expected.

What were our picks again? Let's put into context as to who we missed out on
Standard 1st - 4th rounds starting at 15, slightly modified by the Lyons trade. We should have got someone of substance at least.

Brodie Grundy had 58 ruck taps to 6 by English last year.
Ormond-Allen territory.

English plays like a 6ft 10" wingman not a No.1 Ruckman is the point I was trying to make.

And would be better off as a 6'10" wingman imo. At least until he ends up being 100kg or so, which he may very well not do, he would be a great POD wingman.

Yep looking like a bad year for Hamish and his team.

Yes there’s the issue of Pykes pace request - but Hamish still picks.

I still have some hope they will all push through and we can’t blame Hamish for some poor development

Unfortunately we missed some real talent at the Gallucci pick, there’s no guarantees we would have developed them any better, as I feel Gallucci should have been given more game time in the past 3 seasons, but we definitely missed the mark!

Jarrad Berry shouldve been picked ahead of Galluci. But the plethora of inside miss would have meant he wouldn’t have played much anyway and we’d be getting a player without any experience starting the 2020 season.

I honestly thought it would be Berry or SA boy Hayward with some chance Powell-Pepper but the no dickheads policy probably put the line through him and Alex Witherden's broken leg and no football in his draft year probably stymied that.

This is Ogilvie's take on Jordan post-draft

Selection No.15 – Jordan Gallucci
Hamish Ogilvie says: "I think they made a decision to play volleyball because it was going to help his footy. He's also trained in a martial art."

Not exactly a glowing endorsement. Martial arts - really? I'm surprised he didn't say he was punctual!
He was more excited about Signorello

Selection No.62 – Matthew Signorello
Hamish Ogilvie says: "We really like Matty, we just gritted our teeth and hoped he got to us. He's got elite ball take. There was a game he played up in Highgate, when they used the pink breast cancer balls, they were poly-coated balls and he never fumbled all day when hardly anybody could take it clean. He's a really tough mid, he's got a bit of an injured shoulder but he'll be fine to do pretty much everything after Christmas."

Wasn’t Berry drafted as mainly a HBF who has since pushed more into a genuine mid?

He could have easily played at the expense of Kelly & DMac over the past 3 seasons - although we probably wouldn’t have played him there ahead of those two.

15, 44, 51

Gaucc seems a bust, but you can't expect too much from 3rd and 4th rd picks
Yep, we traded our r2 pick the year before for Hampton as a future pick trade.

From pick 15 after Gooch, players picked don't strike me as being quick players ( wikipedia 2016 draft ) so Gooch might have been it if speed was made a priority consideration.

Exactly my point earlier, both Signorello and Lachie Murphy were standout mids for the Northern Knights in their draft year but for reasons only known to our brain trust they decided to re-program Signorello into an outside runner probably because he had a good tank....I know this because one the Northern Knights staff told me that the next year when I was talking to him at a local game.

I know Murphy lacks a bit of size/height to play permanent mid but have to say I'm surprised we haven't give him a squirt in the middle when things aren't going well, he's dead set in and under terrier and I distinctly remember when he went back to the SANFL last year he had a run through the midfield and did very well. Size hasn't stopped Dane Zorko or Dion Prestia being bloody good mids.

Look at the entirety of the 2016 draft. Terrible. The first round is littered with garbage players and it doesn't get much better in the later rounds.

Not surprising we couldn't get a great return

It's not looking good.
What I don't understand is why are we taking 5 players in this terrible draft, even when we don't have a 2nd round pick also.
And then in the 2018 "super" draft, only taking 3 players and giving picks away for 2019.
It doesn't look like we have made a very good judgement on the the strengths of the drafts

Draft sanctions feed into that?

We had four picks in 2018 (Jones, McHenry, Hamill, Sholl).

No mate everyone at the Ballarat Rebels knew his future was as a big bodied midfielder, any of the AFL Club Scouts would have told you that with his kamikaze attack on the footy and endurance/elite running capabilities.
He was an All Australian as an under ager playing the running back role but unfortunately he had a late start to his draft year games wise recovering from off season surgery but the Rebels' plan was always to play him as a mid in 2016 as soon as his fitness allowed which was quite late in the season but he showed plenty once he transitioned in there from defence. It was no mistake that Brisbane immediately played him in the midfield as soon as he was AFL ready.
