We will probably lose Gibbs in 12 months. Brodie is the natural midfielder. Inside but can receive. Reads the ball well. Sums up options well. Gets his hands free. Has pace. Moves in a rangy loping fashion in traffic like Bontempelli.

Would rather a dedicated midfielder rather than a flanker who also plays midfield.

Haven't seen a heap of them but with Murphy being 30 and Gibbs 27 and possibly being traded at some stage and being a bit short in the middle I would lean towards Brodie as a centerman. Taranto looks like he could play on ball but perhaps more outside forward/winger? Brodie might be slightly better with his hands from the highlights packages. Either way should be a good player.

Taranto for me.
Grunt can be found and drafted anytime, silk is a lot rarer, grab it while we can.

Not too many Cripps' around. It's the reading of the play that matters.

I worry about Menzel at #11. We hoped he could transition to the midfield but it didn't happen.

Will Taranto be a full time mid who plays forward occasionally or a half forward who rotates into the midfield?

Brodie stands out like a sore thumb given what we need, but points Soapy V for looking past the bleeding obvious so I'll try to follow your lead. Probably could make a case for anywhere up to 15-20 players. Really want a beast who smashes it on the inside, but can bust the lines with powerful running on the outside when the opportunity presents itself so that narrows the field somewhat. Would much rather a person who uses his ball winning abilities to bring his team mates into the game rather than simply slams it onto the boot and hopes for the best. Must have a defensive side to his game and be able to stick a tackle. Not only would it be a nice change to have a midfielder who can snag a few goals, I'd actually love to get one with a bit of mongrel in him as well.

Wouldn't have an issue if SOS called out Sam Powell-Pepper.

Think the coaching staff out West have done a fine job with Powell-Pepper's development. Spent a fair bit of this years U18 Carnival used as a HBF or HFF rather than just a midfielder, so he'd come as a more rounded player than some of the more fancied prospects and you could utilise him elsewhere when resting off the ball. Think he'd absolutely revel playing next to Cripps and would feel right at home with the current focus on contested footy. If the Blues are keen to find someone who has an even fiercer desire to succeed than Jack Silvagni then they need look no further than Powell-Pepper. Won't escape the first round as he's exactly the type of player the Doggies or the Swans will go out of their way to snaffle.

I'll be changing frequently from now until draft day.

The thought of another competitive and unconditional beast like Cripps is salivating. The kind of player that wins you finals.

Given that we are desperately thin through the midfield, I'd take Brodie.

Hopefully a goal kicking mid. We don't have anywhere near enough footskills at Carlton, and we need players that can hit targets.
Turnovers are our biggest problem at the moment, not in and under grunt.

I think we have problems everywhere. Appreciate the silk and scoreboard impact from Taranto. Hoping Pickett might be that plus pace.

The cons Knightmare lists concern me:

Weaknesses:
- Two-way running effort
- Work rate
- Attack on the ball
- Unclear whether he has the game to step into full-time midfield role

I think Taranto disproved those perceived weaknesses by the end of year, particularly re: work rate and two way running.

Taranto has scoreboard impact. In my opinion we need that in a midfielder desperately.

Better kicking skills than Brodie as well.

But Brodie will slot in from round 1. He'd be a great partner for Cripps for the next decade.

Either one of them should be an awesome pickup. So glad we kept pick #5. At the same time, really disappointed we couldn't obtain more earlier picks in this year's draft considering the midfield talent available.

The one thing that puts me off Scrimshaw is the height oddly enough. I just think we have a plethora of talented 190cm+ players. Would like us to get some around the 185cm mark so we're not too top heavy. But he is a smooth mover and has a nice left foot kick.

Ainsworth is strong over head, has explosive speed and has some pretty good field kicking. His set shot kicking needs work though.

Damn, there's 4 players we could really use. Sadly, we can only take 1.

I'm really expecting to hit the draft big time next year. Gibbs out for Crows 1st. With just the 2 years and being 29, I'll take pick #13 next year. Trade our 2018 1st for a top 5 pick. If we finish bottom 2, I'm expecting a compo pick from the AFL given the amount of players we've lost over the 3 years (Henderson, Yarran, Betts, Waite, Menzel, Tuohy and you can include Gibbs in this too, highly doubt he'll be here after 2017), the low amount of games won and haven't played finals since 2013.

Hopefully Picks:

#2, #5, #13 and #19

Yep. That was knightmare's rating at the start of the season. A lot changes...

Sept 18 was his last update to those rankings. Even mentions his champs and TAC form and lists that as a reason for him starting to move up everybody's order.

Yeah but first impressions last and sometimes opinions stick. His work rate seemed fine toward the latter part of the season. With a professional club to nurture him, I don't think it'll be a problem.

Haven't seen enough of any of them to pick.

Do not want another flanker/athlete that may be able to play midfield, I want another pure midfielder that can win their own ball.

This year my opinion is almost entirely based on highlights packages so take it with a pinch of salt.

My two cents on Brodie. He looks like a footballer. He hunches his back like the Bont. He's ready made physically. He's slow in play. He often takes the first option by hand because he's slow. He kicks to contests or just bombs it forward without targeting a teammate. He gets a lot of contested ball by physically pushing his way through. I doubt he'll be able to do that as much at AFL level.

I'd go Scrimshaw myself. He'll take more time to develop but he's makes his opponents look silly. It's incredible for a guy his height to move through packs like he does.
