There has been talk of JOM maybe entering the National draft as a way to get to Hawthorn at pick 10 should a trade not eventuate, as a way to avoid the pre season draft where Essendon would surely get him straight away, as they've said they would.

If he does enter it what would you think of picking him up at #5? Personally I'd do it.

Just curious, is this an observation of the past 2 years ? I seem to remember around this time last year people saying that 2016 would be THE midfield draft, with all the references being towards how good SPS would be. I also understand he struggled with a hammy this year, could that be a determinant for the 'hot and cold'.

Based only on this year. Looking at SPS last year and the only thing you could say is that he looked damn good. Still inconsistent, but what he did by foot and way he moved in traffic suggested real class. He didn't get huge numbers, which was always my worry, but what he did do you noticed.
I was hoping to see his numbers go up and that hasn't happened significantly. For much of the year his statistics have looked decidedly ordinary. With the SA and WA boys they also get the chance to play senior footy - it is one of their major advantages. SPS didn't, even though guys like Waterman did. That puts him back some way.
I have no idea how bad his injury issues have been, I only know that he has had some injuries. Nor do I know if his injury issues are going to be ongoing, which would turn me off.

On the other hand I did not note Taranto last year. He did not play at the Carnival and I didn't note him playing in the TAC Cup. Doesn't mean a lot as I usually get to see Bendigo Pioneer games. So I can only go on what I saw this year. I was impressed. Especially for Vic Metro. Nor have I heard anything about any long term injuries that have been hard to shake off. That is also something I prefer to see, as we appear to like getting guys who have had injuries too often for my taste.

They have threatened to bid for both guys. Not sure if they were just trying to p*ss GWS and GC off or whether they were fair dinkum.

Thanks for the in-depth response ! Admittedly I'm not great at analysing or judging transition from 18's to big boys league, so I tend to more impressed by traits that will always stick out ie. Agility, pace, one touch ability and X-factor. A poster mentioned being impressed that with all the class SPS also brings good endeavour and aggression which is also something that caught my eye, but as you say low numbers can be worrisome and can carry a sense of risk. I think with 5 we will do well regardless.

Would be nice... I wonder if GC would take the deal though... They do have a lot of picks this period, they might see it as a positive.

I'm not sure Taranto gets picked before Brodie though... I'd personally be happy with either!

Can't see why GC would do that. If we had those picks this foursome would be handy.

I would prefer Taranto over SPS. Taranto is a Victorian: no 'go home' factor. Taranto consistently gets the possessions; SPS does not. SPS can do some incredible things, but he is very hot and cold and hasn't had the game time against men that many WA boys get. Neither has Taranto, being a Victorian, but he looks more solid in the torso at this point. Taranto hasn't had a huge number of 'big' games yet, but he really stood up in those that he had. SPS was magic once or twice and kickless the rest of the time.

SPS is from Halls Creek. Haha, trust me there would be zero go-home factor from that place.

If you ever want to know why regulation is important, check out all the people who are quite happy to entertain the idea of knowingly colluding and perpetrating draft tampering.

Some people will take any edge they can get, even if, on the whole by doing so it hurts them.

Not too familiar with the draftees this year, but Brodie sounds most likely to become a player. Probably not the highest ceiling but would fit in well on the inside with Cripps.

Just rather take the 'bread and butter' players at this stage of our rebuild.

Tend to agree, guys that are strong at the contest are needed with the stage we are at.

It's what worries me about taking a guy like SPS. Sure he can win his own ball when need be but typically l would think he will play a bit on the outside(maybe the way Murphy would play in a better team). With a decent list taking SPS would be fine. But with where we are at l would like stronger contested ball player from a high draft pick.

Taranto inside game is very strong, not to the same level as brodie but he also offers a strong forward game. I think from what he showed end of the year his ceiling is higher.

I feel the same but just a little nervous we may let go the better player for the need.....I don't know.....very confusing.

I think Brodie just edges him out. Brodie lacks agility, but has everything else going for him, while Taranto lacks pace, maybe some inconsistent hands but a good nose for goal.

I'm keener on SPS because he just looks so comfortable inside and out, and thus he will just about be able to do whatever's asked of him short of being a wrecking ball.

Brodie is the safest option to find a 200+ game player I think.
