I'm not saying this from a CFC POV, but i think it is a near certainty that Brisbane bid on Bowes.

It is in the northern clubs own huge interest for the 20% discount to remain on academy players. For the southern clubs to continue allowing this, the bidding system must not only be legit, but seen to be legit.

I'm not fussed enough to argue this and other reasons in detail, but i'm confident that Brisbane will bid on Bowes at 3 and GC will snap match.

I don't think they will unless the connection to Ainsworth breaks loose.

The only scenario in which I see Brisbane not bidding on Bowes, is if Essendon select McGrath and GWS select Ainsworth.

GWS wont do that though. I believe the first two picks are set in stone, McGluggage and McGrath and the BL will still get the same player even if they bid on Bowes. Just like we get the same player even after bidding on Bowes, assuming the Lions don't bid on him before us. That's why I was saying earlier that bidding on Bowes is pointless. GCS get Bowes 100%, BL get Ainsworth who seems to be their first choice, Ainsworth wants to go their too I believe, and we will take SPS, if recent talk is correct that he is our first choice. GWS have clearly locked onto McGrath as well. That's why they traded as they did, so they could get him.

I reckon you are a tough marker if you wouldn't want the Will Brodie in this clip in Navy Blue. They are only junior footballers.Plenty to love.

Yeah Brodie only ever kicks the leather off the ball aye!

Brodie has better disposal than Taranto - fact

That is exactly, exactly why you bid on Bowes.

They like him, they rate him, they bid. You're being insanely defeatist about the nature of the academies.

They will get Ainsworth regardless. GC will snap match the Bowes bid.

I wouldn't take the risk and nor do I think Brisbane should, if they for instance rate Ainsworth at 2 and Bowes at 8.

If they're in love with Ainsworth they should be true to themselves and to Ainsworth.

Oh of course.

But if Brisbane rate a gun Qld'er midfielder at No8 on their list, then they may as well pack in the Academy System as it makes a mockery of it.

*i support the academy system.

Brisbane bidding on Bowes benefits the Academy system, which helps the northern clubs. It keeps its integrity. GC will snap match the bid and it doesn't hurt them.

It is in the AFL and northern clubs interest, and is the perfect scenario, to demonstrate bidding integrity.

*damn, i said i wouldn't argue this lol....so i won't anymore.

There are only 3 options really

- The pure talent, SPS mix of ball winning ability with pace and excellent disposal
- The pure midfielder, Brodie an inside bull with the body type for it and a burst of speed to set him apart from other inside mids
- The hybrid mid, Taranto with excellent goal sense and a quality ability both inisde the centre circle and the forward fifty

I reckon you're being pretty generous with the phrase 'positive impact' there. Even for metres gained, a very simple metric, it's not that flash given how often he handballs backwards, sideways and for less than 2 metres.
.
You must not rate Patty Cripps then, as plenty of his handballs go backwards and sideways and by the very simple metric ( simple because it doesn't take into account the end result of the possession) is low metres gained player. If you win the ball in a contest and give it to a player in space that is not under pressure when they dispose of the ball, to me that is a positive impact.

The thing with Cripps is that he largely puts the ball in the right hands for the best team advantage and if that happens to be to go backwards, in order to go forwards, then so be it.

Cripps's negative metres are a teams positive metres. He's just a different type of cat. :)

Just a heads up for anyone interested, it looks like we're going to have a few spots available for this year's phantom. Jump over to the thread if you're interested in taking a club's picks and having a bit of fun:

Kinda my point though, and hence why you can play around with the metres gained stat based on the chain of possession, as well as why they also highlight who started the chain of possession (particularly Pro-Stats, who The Age affiliate themselves with I think).

Big Footy Draft.

LemmingMaster has us taking Taranto @ 5. Next picking coming up soon....ish....
Thank Christ for that!!! Can I cancel the padded cell we booked for Toddski just in case it didn't happen??? Absolutely love Toddski's passion for the "Flying Tortilla".

Reckon that's a real stretch Flowers. If I'm drafting someone who I believe will be most likely to have the greatest impact on a game and stand up in big moments at Pick 5 then I'd take some mighty convincing that Taranto's not our man. As much as I like SPS & Brodie as well, the "Flying Tortilla" has won me over. Having said that, I'd still like SOS to bid on Setterfield & Bowes to keep some integrity in the academy system.

I think Brodie is definitely a better and more natural kick to be honest. Which is to ve expected considering the paths they have both taken to get to where they are now.

The bidding system helps clubs further down the draft by changing the order of picks and can remove picks altogether.

If Essendon bid on Bowes for example, that changes the whole dynamic of the draft very early. Would probably remove a top 10 pick altogether if GCS matched

The whole point of it is for us to bid for the player where we would be happy to take him. You don't bid to play mind games; you bid because you like him. If they're not prepared to pay, you get the player. It's worked great so far.

Metres gained is a horrific stat to judge a player with no context.

Who cares if he's handballing backwards? a lot of the top afl teams do that to a free man in space to get a clear kick forward...

It's what brodies suppose to do in contested situations rather than just boot it forward.

Not sure how you can say he wasn't having a positive influence In that video...commentator even mentioned he was taking the game away from metro

Really like the look of SPS and then Brodie at pick 5 and would LOVE it if we took Tony Olango! Looks like a better, more athletic version on NicNat.

So who's the goal kicker of the first round mids?

Personally, take whoever as a first rounder, have a dip at Rioli in the 3rd, go for Green if he's still available in the whatever draft, throw in Pickett, Wright, a fit Murphy, fitter Summer, hope Bokehorst & Cunnningham come on, and we have a neat little mosquito fleet of scoring options.

Am I doing it right??

You'd have to knock three times and tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree for SOS to take him.
