I'm saying that can mean different things to different people/clubs.

Bontempelli wasn't the best player in his draft year although he did project favourably.

should be "best available" for what you "NEED" first and foremost.............

Agree up to a point, because 'needs' can change, and often do, as the season progresses due to injury, positional changes, and player development, etc. The important thing for me, is that the player also at least fulfils the expectations of the draft pick number and retain the equivalent player currency. So, I would place skills, abilities and other player qualities above the 'needs' aspect (but that is important, too, though).

I don't disagree and you would have to also acknowledge that the Dogs didn't have the best KPP stocks once they picked best available over the last 3 years, then traded for Boyd, Hamling and added Adams late in the draft as a mature body tall to fill their needs

I am sure we are on the same page Harker, just different ways of looking at it

GWS have said they see McGrath as the ideal replacement for Heath Shaw.

And they have also suggested that if McGrath was gone, they would choose another explosive player in Ainsworth. They may deem that these guys project better than McCluggage, which is a reasonable debate

No way the AFL take pick 2 off them. That's too shiny for the AFL to strip.

Probably tin hat stuff, but I dare say GWS's frantic efforts to secure pick 2 was to cash in some of their 'confiscatable' 1st and 2nd round picks.

This way they get an elite pick, pay for their academy selections with whatever they have left. And if they are left in deficit, they have already started stockpiling extra 2017 pick(s).

The AFL doesn't punish. It does back room deals with all parties that punishes just enough to avoid excessive media scrutiny. Our salary cap punishments notwithstanding.

The AFL perhaps punished Carlton too hard for salary cap cheating in the 2002 and 2003 drafts and will not punish clubs to that extent again.

This Hayward talk scares me, we're not in a position to roll the dice like that. We need a player like Brodie or Taranto who have much higher floors.

It's between Taranto and SPS or un expect jolt like Hayward rocketing into contention at pick 5
I'd be very happy with SPS at #5 , and #24/25. an inside mid like Clarke or Bunker, or maybe Cox or Witherden.
All really very good exciting prospects
I've been oscillating a lot and with possible penalties to GWS , then the bidding things will change.

GWS aren't interested as to who may be the best player in this draft........they just want McGrath, and as he's the missing link they need.

I'm not sure I agree with this, as McGrath will be drafted to the premiership favourites who currently have good strong players in the side with 3-4 pre-seasons under their belt, McGrath is by no means big bodied and I just feel he is a long term prospect for them and not a missing link as such.

Whilst McGrath might be close to best available l think he could be that player they need next year, the missing link. Haven't seen u18 talent provide that much run and drive from defence before. I Expect him to play round one off half back.

Louis is one of the best if not kick in the draft pool and a real goer a nice midfileder would not be disappointed later in the draft.

I reacted poorly when I first heard about it, but in hindsight I'm not sure its such a far fetched idea.

Love this kid. Had a smashing U18 Championships. Played inside and showed great awareness and ability to win clearances at will and dish out to advantage. The knock on him is supposedly pace but I found he positions well and apparently in the second half of the season he was played as an outside mid at TAC level so wasn't as effective.

I think he needs to put on weight but you can't best a good footy brain and he has that. Hoping he lasts to a later pick.

Don't count out the possibility we might opt for Will Setterfield touted as a genuine option by Cal Twomey on SEN Sunday night. Would be thrilled if this eventuates as we are looking to bring in as much talent as possible. When assessing the talent pool, SOS is considering which of the talent available at our pick has the most upside.

After watching as much Hayward as google and AFL draft hub (if they're reliable sources lol) will allow I actually rate him around the 5th best player in the draft.

One on one work is great, can take a mark, doesn't seem slow and has the perfect physical size that will fill out nicely. Only just turned 18, I think he has the most potential out of SPS & Brodie, and probably Taranto. Watching the all stars game confirmed he could definitely become a primary mid resting up forward....turned off Brodie, not keen on SPS, hoping at Pick 5 we nab Hayward or Taranto.

Ive been on the Taranto bandwagon for a couple of months now. Sam lansberg from the HS called him fyfe like today. That's good enough for me.

3. GWS are more focused on others, on a needs basis (Perryman, Sproule, McCreadie) than for Setterfield.
4. GWS don't want to dip in too hard into next years points.
5. GWS have a feel that the likes of Perryman, Sproule etc....will be bid on earlier than for what they had hoped for.

It may be possible that GWS are prepared to allow Setterfield to walk through to another club, so as it doesn't affect their plans too much.

By the looks of it we would be cray cray not to bid on Setterfield.

As I said in the list thread he seems to Like Melbourne (coming from Albury)... would be a shame if GWS were to draft him.

Essendon areca good chance to take Mcgrath though.
