Bicks who do you see as the most balanced (i.e. inside/outside) mid who will likely be available at our pick?

Venables' highlights showed he had some power and explosiveness (something with all our current mids lack).

Hayward looks a talent though.

That's Berry, Powell Pepper and Venables, of course you know who I favour the most but I'll be satisfied with any of them personally. Venables is the one I still have a slight ?? on because of his lack of production and tendency to go missing a bit too often in matches , however if Hamish and the crew are confident that can be worked on I'll back them in to get it right if we select him.

Berry and Powell Pepper I believe are dead set certainties to make into first class AFL players and I'd be very surprised if both don't play AFL in their 1st season as both already have proven they have great tanks and the required toughness, Venables I feel may take a little longer to get up to AFL standard fitness as he's played so little football the last couple of years due to injury.

All that's dependent on us actually targeting a midfielder of course, looks a no brainer to us but Hamish has been known to surprise before so perhaps Todd Marshall, Jy Simpkin, Josh Battle or even Hayward could come into consideration all being "unique" type of players??

Pretty sure he won't he had a month of good footy with the highlight being 9 goals in a final which I saw. He played 18 s the majority of the year where other players managed to get into the seniors. Recruiters watch all year not just the last 4 weeks although the 18 final was dominated by one player.
Sam Petrevski-Seton played Colts all year, didn't manage a senior game and could go top 5. It's no big deal Hayward played u18s.

Recruiters are looking for guys who show sharp improvement in their final junior year - like Bontempelli etc. Those guys tend to continue that upward curve.

Can Brodie Smith kick OK??
Berry and Smith are virtual clones in every way apart from one major point of difference.....hardness/aggression...in that regard Berry I would class as a real hard nut...Brodie Smith not so much.

Read the piece above I posted from the Grand Final of the Herald Sun Country Shield Schools comp for an indication..

Settle down Bicks. Comparing Berry's kicking to Smith's is more than a bit of a stretch. We know you like the boy but try and keep some objectivity.

Could someone please give me some info on Simpkin and whether he's a chance.

Apologies if it's already been posted and I've missed it
After taking Milera last year, I doubt we'd go there but I think it would be an inspired pick. Was rated top 5 at the start of this year. His biggest plus is elite skills, his kicking is precise and he has that innate sense for the game that only the best players have. Wingard is probably the one you'd compare him to of current players (although hopefully won't go missing under pressure like Wingard does).

Whoever picks him could end up with the best player in the draft.

I'm surprised there is no talk on hear re Oliver Florent. Is it because many think he'll be gone by our first pick or because he isn't a big bodied mid. Late in the year in the all stars game he was BOG playing as a genuine mid. He could be similar to Josh Kelly imo. Classy, moves well, can play inside/outside, can do it all. I'm surprised he isn't being talk about as a viable option.

He's fourth in the poll, so has some love here. Intriguing that before TAC finals was probably 3rd round pick, now maybe top 10. Got to love a player who steps up in finals and big games and who's deficiencies become strengths. Or maybe he just had a purple patch.

The Sandringham connection doesn't help but with Roo regularly talking about wanting mids who are both inside and outside, wouldn't surprise at all if we read out his name. Also wouldn't surprise if he was already gone.

Ah...actually forgot that his dad died only a couple of months ago. Would be a brave (and cold hearted) interstate club that pulls him away from his grieving family and widowed mum. You'd have to say we're no chance of drafting him.

Without reading the whole thread, which tall quick skilful inside mid will be there at 13? Get him.
Wish it was that easy

Jack Bowes at pick 2 or 3 would be nice

The ones we take won't be the finished product and we will need to develop them very well over a couple of years or so

Powell-Pepper at 13 is way too high for him. His kicking concerns me a lot. Venable's injury won't effect him too much. He can ply AFL football year 1. Berry is the best option for us IMO. Most versatile player in the draft nearly. At half forward, in the guts, on the wing and half back he looks comfortable. Lots of room to grow with Berry. Hayward is a risky option at this pick but not to far off where a club might take him. Battle is too early for my liking. Sub 193 key forwards don't usually make it at AFL level.

We should take a midfielder or key forward IMO. Late draft we will be able to get a midfielder like Graham, Brayshaw, Guelfi etc. but key forwards wont be their at our pick. If Todd is available we should pounce because rarely do key forwards dafted outside the first round succeed. Would also like to see us draft an athletic ruckman like Olango or a ruck forward like Ladhams late draft as they have runs on the board and provide something different to our ruck mix.

He would be gone before our pick as well!!! Poor guy :(

He's been hovering around the early second and late first round since the champs.

e.g. Hugh McCluggage

Out of the names listed on the poll who are genuine Mids because that's what we need, because be prepared for every media outlet to comment on how Adelaide has a weak midfield and they are somewhat correct as we all agree

Get a feeling SPP will go to WCE, the pick before us.

Would leave us with a choice between Venables and Berry, probably

Well...of those listed in the poll only Florent (who isn't coming) and Sam Powell Pepper are genuine mids at this stage. But that's just it, at this stage. You'd expect most of them to play midfield at some stage.

It's a funny feeling not wanting Hayward at this earlier pick, but between him and SPP, there are no two player bar Venables that I'd be more worried about not having. These blokes could develop into jets and make us regret our decision should it not work out.

Still on board Venables, but backing Ogilvie in.

I'd even argue whether those two are, at this stage.

It's partially because many juniors are trialled in various positions on the field, though.

I hear the knock on his kicking is greatly exaggerated....

Didn't he score a perfect 30/30 in the goal kicking test at the combine?
