One of our biggest unaddressed problems/weaknesses over the last few years has been our forward line.

We have lacked a dangerous medium forward since chappy left and SJ on final legs as well as a CHF that can get on the park. But IMO it is more to do with strategy and our lack of roles given to our forwards.

Bombing it on Hawkins' head whilst being double teamed, or kicking it to stationary targets (sound familiar?) will just not cut it in the modern game, especially against good defences. The brown and yellow flogs have really mastered how it should be done, with more precise forward 50 entries to moving leading players as well as permanent forwards who have defined forward roles.

STRATEGY

- We need our forwards to be constantly moving with space being opened up to lead in to.

- We need to lower our eyes and hit up short 15m chip passes (like Hawks do) to free players, rather than bomb it every time to a double teamed Hawkins. The top of the goal square kick should still be used but only at the opportune moment. We just need to be less predictable and smarter.

PERSONNEL ROLES

The last few years our forwards have not had any defined roles (from where I sit). Each player needs a different role from the next in order to make the forward line work as a cohesive unit.

My ideal forward line and accompanying roles:

HF: resting mid - Clark or Vardy - Bartel
FF: Lang/Gregson - Hawkins - Menzel

- Resting mids (caddy, Motlop, Duncan, Selwood, danger). Role: to have a break from the mid and capitalise on opportunities.

- CHF can only be one of Clark or vardy. Unless vardy is playing as a second ruck and rotating forward (on the assumption Stanley is not there) both cannot fit. It shouldn't be an issue as one will probably be injured anyway. Role: to take that second defender from Hawkins and compete in the air and be a target up the ground therefore opening space in the forward 50.

- Bartel: my role for him would be a defensive hff that tags the best hbf and thus stopping teams running out of our attack at ease (a real weakness for us). Rooke mastered this role in our glory days and jimmy has the attributes to do the same, he tagged hayes out of the gf so can do this, the great man will have no issue sacrificing himself for the team in this new role and can contribute with a goal or 2 with some good leadership and tackling pressure and aerial presence in the forward 50.

- Gregson/Lang: as a result of having no specialist medium forward (bar menzel) we are forced to keep one of these players here. It's not ideal as they are both better mids, it shows we need to target one in the draft and trade next year. Role: to be CONSTANTLY moving when we are on the attack (running up and down the ground and repeat, constantly leading into space making an option) like poupolo or bruest do. They also need to be dangerous at ground level. When we do not have the ball, they need to bring relentless tackling pressure that causes inside 50 turnovers.

- Hawkins: Needs to move more. Our motto next year needs to be "keep moving". He is so much more dangerous on the lead marking at the ball and if our above players keep moving, space opens up for Hawkins to lead into. His secondary role will still always be that power foward get out of jail kick card but I would like to see it used less. If he's one out, good kick it to him at his advantage. But when double teamed, we need to lower our eyes and be unpredictable.

- Menzel: assuming stays fit, menzels role is that lurking smart medium forward that we lack and crave so much. To create opportunities from nothing and be an aerial target (third tall almost).

Overall we need to be less predictable going forward (by not kicking to Hawkins every single time). They need to work together as one cohesive moving unpredictable unit, by fulfilling smaller individual roles.

The point of this thread is to discuss ideas as to how to make our forward work better and be more dangerous. Are there any other ideas?

Hawkins for me is the big one. I think the club expects too much from him running wise - then he gets tired and ends up trying to out body opponents. I think we need to play a high forward line with Hawkins deep. Nokia 2110 at his feet. Menzel, Clark, and Vardy can all kick 50 so I'd like them to stay out of the 50 and additionally do Hawkins running for him.

Hawkins should be played out of the goal square every game; none of this half forward, on the wing or up the field crap. He's the biggest forward in the comp, no one can stop him one-on-one, so keep him close to goal for goodness sake.
He does need to lead more though so start him in the square and if he's got space in front of him, he needs to do short and sharp leads or if it's clogged up just kick it to him in the goal square.
Quick ball movement is the key here but if teams do zone off then we need to use free players, just like Hawthorn do

I'd like us to start daring opposition defenders to stand in the holes left between Hawkins and Clark and start putting the ball there.

A break down of the sources of Hawkins' goals in 2015

It would be great if we had more information about when he was a target. Or someone else to compare the breakdown to but it suggests that he isn't that imbalanced, he gets a third of his goals on the lead and a similar number of contested situations.

To me the big question is do we play with 3 talls + Menzel, 2 talls + Menzel or just 3 talls. IF we play 3 talls + menzel there won't be much forward pressure.

Hawkins and Clark to me are very similar in the way they like to play the forward line and Clark was actually playing it better last season until he became rooted in the cruet and that will be a challenge again next year and in the end I can see them settling on Vardy at CHF as long as his body holds out.
Hawkins I expect will be better next year for obvious reasons we don't need to go into here.
Menzel God bless him will be the live wire we have lacked for a while, and with no Clark I suspect Stanley spends good minutes forward with Smith carrying the bulk of the ruck work.
So Hawkins Vardy Menzel a resting mid, Cocky as the project player and Gregson as my goal sneak.
Well that's today I expect that it will change more than once before rd1:D

There's no reason why Hawkins shouldn't be kicking 60+ goals every year, so long as he works hard and is used correctly

I'd watch that again and again....that's how we play tomahawk

We have no problems with talls other than injury

Play hawkins never passed the start of the square. He doesnt need to be a marking option on the wing, he got a lot of goals this year by camping forward and Motlop hits him up on the fast break. Hawkins one on one. Game over sorry son.

we need more forward pressure, cant afford to play Jimmy, Vardy (or clark) in the same forward line far to slow paced. We need a traditonal sturcture of;

FF- Hawkins, barely moved beyond the arch
FP1 (small)- this player is unknown, we need to be a pressure forward who pretty much play in the forward line for 90% of the game, gregson and lang just arent fast enough or skillful enough to fill this role. Betts, Rioli, Ballas, poppy, chappy are the perfect examples of this type. Hopefully we can get something in the draft, or maybe Mccarthy.
FF2 (small)- this position is a resting position for a small mid, take your pick but I suppose Lang and Gregson are the likely candidates and have shown some good stuff when forward. These 2 should probably split there games 50/50 here. Surely we cant play 2 players of that height in the same centre bounce.
CHF-Vardy and Clark have both showed they can play a more mobile role up the ground, even Stanley is a viable option.
FF1-Probably should be Menzals hes a star if he can stay on the park. Not bad pace as a pressure player too.
FF2-Resting Mid taller than Gregson and Lang. We have a long list here; Selsy, Cocky, Bartel, Murdoch, Guthrie, Caddy, Motlop, Duncan, Danger.

Probably a bench position needs to have a forward on it to so take your pick from the latter FF2 position.

I still like Bartel deep forward; can take a big mark and is an awkward matchup for most teams. Yeah he's not lightning quick but he knows how to play footy and I think he can put some real pressure on the opposition backs.

Forward line predictions will probably change 100 times between now and Round 1, but at the moment I like this setup:

HF: Motlop Clark Menzel

F: Gregson Hawkins Bartel

I think the Hawks line up for R1 will be:
FB: Burgoyne, Frawley, Stratton
B: Birchall, Gibson, Hodge

I'd probably try this line:
HF: Motlop, Murdoch, Gregson
F: Menzel, Hawkins, Clark

I'd like to have either Cockatoo or Lang on the interchange. I'd go with a bit more pace.

I wouldn't go for a 3rd tall, if we did need another tall I'd be fairly confident we would have enough in other positions to move around.

What Clark has that no one else in our forward line has is aggression. Hawkins is intimidating because of his size and ability.
But Clark is happy to throw himself around we need more of that. A small forward that annoyed the opposition was tough and kicked goals would be handy.
Scott Selwood could play the role at times but will be needed through the middle and maybe even down back. Cowan and Linc if they are fit could do it.
There is a lot of talent that can go through the forward line. Also expect more goals from Danger, Mackie, Selwood, Duncan, Caddy, Guthrie and Motlop.
Menzel as well can play deep forward or feed off Hawkins.

Said it before and I'll say it again. Scut could be a very handy smallish lockdown forward. He can sniff a goal too!.

Scut - Mitch - Caddy/Mots
Mr. G - Hawkins - Daniel
