you'll get there mate

I know! Only two months away!!!

And I agree with much of what you said…. Australian music is (and always has been I reckon) in very good shape.

Just wasn't overly enamoured with much of what I heard last week. Admittedly I only caught around half of it.

Probably me just getting old though. Doubt my dear old Dad would've been into TISM or Regurgitator or Bowie or the Pixies or the Chilli Peppers or the Eels or the Smashing Pumpkins when he was my age either.

(Well maybe Bowie!)

Luckily it's an Australian radio station :) If an American is listening to it, it's likely because they have an interest in Australian music.
True. I just think JJJ needs to decide what it wants the Hottest 100 to be. If they want it to predominantly be a celebration of Oz music, that's great, I like plenty of Oz music. However, if they want it to be a snapshot of the best music from around the world for the year, then they need to stop subtlely and not so subtlely pushing people to choose Oz music over their favourite music.

It is incredibly unfortunate the best 3 song stretch throughout the entire 200 was 33 "GOD", People-Vultures & No Problem between 102-104. Glowed Up (107), Ivy (113) & Real Friends (116) the other great tracks that just missed out.

Is it a contender for best 101-120 ever? These near misses certainly added salt to the wounds after an extremely disappointing countdown

Has it ever been a snapshot of the best music around the world for the year though? It's a countdown voted for by people that mostly listen to the station. They will vote for songs that they know, listening to triple j. Triple j currently want to promote Australian music, and are the single biggest opportunity for exposure for a starting Australian artist. Unearthed is how Flume went from some kid to headlining feativals internationally. How Vance Joy went from a handy VFL footballer to placing in the billboard charts. How countless artists have managed to travel the world doing what they love.
Their apparent goal right is to provide an alternate station for those that aren't braindead listening to nova and promote australian music. Therefore, that's the sort of music they play on the station and therefore that is the sort of music listeners know and vote for.
If you reckon triple j suck because 20 years ago they used to play Pearl Jam and The Cranberries then you're no longer in the target audience and the countdown should essentially be irrelevant to you.
As an aside, Australian festivals tend to book more Australian bands these days. People go to festivals, see bands, have new favourite bands and songs.

Tldr: triple j play a lot of australian music. Voters are predominantly triple j listeners. Voters vote for songs they know. If you don't listen to triple j normally because you're not fussed on the music they play, of course you'll think the countdown sucks

Has it ever been a snapshot of the best music from around the world for the year? Well, insofar as it's limited to what's played on Triple J, yes. Go back to the '90s counts and the bands that were popular that year around the world are also reflected in the poll. Now, as I say, if they want to be an extended Unearthed poll, I don't have a problem with that. I like plenty of Aussie music. But the disconnect comes in because they are still trying to promote it as 'the year's best music' and they still give plenty of airplay to international bands. But when the Hottest 100 rolls around, they encourage you to forget the great international music they have played and focus only on the Aussie music. As I say, I don't mind either way, but pick one, because that's what is creating a lot of the murmurings each year.

have never taken an interest in the hottest 100, given i spend most of my time listening to death metal and the like. interestingly enough, got into a lot of the bands of my vintage 15 or 20 years after the fact after my tastes mellowed to include other things in regular rotation. am reminded of a silent alarm rant - the world has moved on from guitar based music. not dead, but no longer mainstream.
as such i don't need to shed a tear, though even to my ears what i hear of the top 100 always sounds shit. the stuff i listen to gets made regardless of whether triple j plays it. people need to learn to dig beneath the surface a little. your music's not dead, they just don't play it on the radio.

Just got home from a months travelling and didnt manage to catch when flume got announced #1. How was it? Also super stoked for amy shark, wish she hadve been the winner though. It truly would have epitomised what the hottest 100 is all about.
