It's pretty obvious SOS prioritised needs and ignored go home worries when drafting. I can't blame him for Pickett and Ahern, but can for JOR, Plowman and Marchbank. I think he let all those early draft picks go to his head after his early success.

Gubby is a funny one. He has a similar history with Brisbane - get a talented list, hold on to it, then jump ship right before the salary cap squeeze explodes. Three years ago we were in stage 2. Now we'll see how bad stage 3 is, and if the drastic steps we appear to be taking this offseason is enough to cauterize the damage. The Collingwood FA moves this year have his fingerprints all over it.

I'll be very interested to see how our new staff handle all of this going forward.

Indeed, of all the ones we've lost at HQ though the Lamberts loss I think is the one that has had the most effect, and that effect will start to take hold at the Lions if it hasn't already

Massive loss with the Ahern trade and wish him the best and hope he can have a successful career and well done to North to be willing to invest the salary and rehab on him
my 2 cents on this trade is with another year on the sidelines he would be behind both the year 15 and 16 draftees and the club saw his salary as an issue as well although I can see both North and Saints owing a favour to the club the conspiracy theorist in me could be to do with Academy bidding just to push a few buttons down south;)
Also it will be interesting to see if both Pickett and WHE leave as it would effect the contract status/retention of Reid and Palmer

Reckon we just cut our losses, maybe he told them he wouldnt be sticking around once the contract was up and he wouldnt be playing all year so not much point in delaying things. How kids who havent even played are on $300k is unbelievable, if they are only here for $$$ just stick with the academy boys.

The Ahern deal is just TPP management.

We are over the limit so we need to cull players, he is a surplus mid and not best 22 plus he's out of action in 17'

North Melbourne actually have money to burn with all their senior exits and no major additions. They need players and won't get near their cap.

They can't get players in so this represents a calculated punt. History tells you there is probably something fatal in Ahern's knee structure and there is a very strong chance he goes again but he's basically a free hit.

For us he gives us salary cap relief. Even if SOS and Gubby nailed every pick we would still have had surplus players in the twos that were either disgruntled or being offered a motza to leave.

Sure it would be nice to get more for he investment but que sera...we move on.

In regards to the early contract extensions, this is my take. Be aware, this is just my speculation.

I believe the early contract extensions are very much a psychological thing. By giving a contract extension just after drafting is a way of getting the player to "buy into the club" long term... or at least have a fair crack at playing for a club which they may not originally want to play for, and not just doing their "tour of duty". They do this by dangling a very large contract extension(i.e. an offer too good to refuse). This doesn't always work, in that some players will be set on returning home and thus not extend. e.g. marchbank; or players who extend, but realise it's not for them e.g. McCarthy.

By having the extension the club is able to position itself so that. 1) if the player turns out good they may be inclined to stay longer. 2) if they do want to trade, the club holds leverage... especially if the player has proven something. If however, they want to trade and they haven't proven anything, whether it be due to injury, or they haven't been able to crack the best 22, then the club loses out.

Now I believe with Pickett and Ahern, we'd like to stick to the plan and give them another year to keep developing, or at least a chance to show what they've got. However the new salary cap/cola squeeze, means we have to shed some. This, I believe is the reason we have to fire sale Pickett and Ahern. They very well may be the ones which got away.

Im still surprised you let him go SO cheaply though...even if he has had 2 knee reco's.

I mean Steele obviously went for a much fairer value.

And rumours are we'll be trading a first round pick for Marchbank and Pickett...not 2 token late picks.

Id image you could get a better pick than that for someone like Stewart even...not that you would use it though i guess.

Some talk from Cal Twomey today that if Bombers take McGrath we might take English who we apparently really like.

I think so far we haven't missed a beat but if we traded so hard for a bloke we could have got for practically nothing at 7 I will lose my ****!!

Surely we've learn't our lesson that at the pointy end of yhe draft you ALWAYS go best available.

If McGrath isn't there we have to take McCluggage!

Happy with this, especially if it helps us get 5

Palmer really was a liability in the Prelim.

We must insist on 5 if its Marchbank, Pickett, Stewart and Palmer. Its too much to give for 13
Happy with this ??

This is what I was talking about the other day. I understand we need Cap space, bit we are leaving ourselves very very thin in depth.

Johnson in his last year gets injured or suspended we would bring in Palmer, Steele or Pickett maybe. All gone.

This massive move on could come and bite us

I still think we don't have enough ruck depth either. We were lucky Mummy played so many games this year

No doubt our depth will be tested but that is part of the reduction in list size and TPP. It is designed to bring us back to the field faster and is unavoidable.

Palmer is lovely to have as depth but is on a senior contract so is expendable.

I'd sooner we blood a Matthew Kennedy next year and even start him at half forward or have Hopper there. I realise hey are different players and not as agile as Rhys but we need to do it or we will lose them via lack of opportunity.

Pick 5 may get us an Ainsworth, Brodie or Taranto who could fill that role anyway but be on minimum contract for 2 years.

That's what happens when you have as much cap space tied up in retaining top line talent as we do. Look at our starting 22. It really is loaded, and those guys are getting paid. Every top end team is in the same situation. The lucky ones don't get injuries and win a premiership. The next most lucky have players hang around for one or two contract extensions after their rookie deal to provide that depth, which you'd hope we're heading towards with the academies. The unluckiest cop the injuries and don't have the depth to support them.
