Safe to say we will lose a few draft picks next year, but we will now have 12 mths to plan for that

Might yet get away with just a fine, but I'd much rather a bird or three in the hand from this year's academy kids than a "maybe" from next year - especially with the gerrymandering of the academy area seemingly inevitable.

Harry Perryman today on SEN - https://audioboom.com/posts/5312023-harry-perryman-on-afternoons

What a bloody legend! As country as they come and very likeable. Will end up a cult hero at the club.

Both legends :)

Almost 12 months on from his own Draft day, one of Collingullie’s finest has issued a cheeky warning about a potential new GIANT.

GIANTS TV caught up with second-year GIANT Matt Kennedy after a gruelling training session in the muggy Sydney heat on Wednesday morning.

The former number 13 draft pick used the opportunity to get back at one of this year’s brightest prospects and fellow GIANTS Academy graduate Harry Perryman.

“I’m not sure about this one, I’ve been telling them not to pick him,” Kennedy said with a smile.

“He’s a bit of a light frame and his skills aren’t great. I’m a bit worried and I’m not looking forward to it, he’s a bit of a character this bloke.”

With just over 500 people in the tiny town of Collingullie, Perryman and Kennedy have grown up together and played local football at the same club for years.

17-year-old Perryman enters Friday night’s NAB AFL Draft as one of the top prospects and as he’s been doing the media rounds in the lead up to the Draft, he’s mentioned Kennedy on more than one occasion.

“I wouldn’t want to live with him. He’s not the smartest bloke going around, I’d like to think I’ve got him covered there,” Perryman told AFL.com.au last month.

Then, this morning on SEN, Perryman had another go.

“I know, it will take me a while to get used to it I suppose,” he said when asked how he will deal with moving into the city.

“Yeah I reckon I’ll be right, Matty Kennedy can do it… so I don’t see why I can’t.”

Potentially teammates come Friday, it could be a frosty reception if Perryman does end up as a GIANT.

“He’s put me under the bus a few times so I thought I’d try and have a go back at him, he deserves it,” Kennedy joked.

Good kids and the kind of characters that build a great footy culture.

What's the point of trading up if we're going to pick Taranto, when the clear no. 1&2 are McCluggage and McGrath. If we really wanted Taranto, could have stayed at 3 and still got him.
I think that if we do go with Taranto, it may have been a change in mind post-trade period.
Because there is still a chance to get McGrath, nobody knows what will happen come draft night. Heard whispers that HMC more of a flight risk and Taranto is not.
I've had similar thoughts to Ichabod. However, when you look at the GWS trades in detail, it's a pretty reasonable position to end up in when you account for uncertainty (i.e. can't control the draft & other clubs' selections!).

If we'd stayed at #7 we would undoubtedly have had to match a bid for Setterfield, likely at #4 or #5. #15 would have been used to match for Perryman, and perhaps #16 could have gained an open pick - but perhaps a club would have bid on an academy kid such as Macreadie so we might have used it. So moving up to #3 was the minimum position required to get ahead of likely picks (can't rule out Essendon taking Setterfield at #1, but can't control everything.) With the reduced list size, the point was to get in ahead of any academy matching bids, and get a high quality kid - even at the cost of a several picks. We also had to move McCarthy on, so #7, #33 & McCarthy on equivalent points to #3 - while it sucks on giving an appropriate return for McCarthy - was OK. The trade with Brisbane for 2, while possibly turning out nugatory, was essentially pretty even. We gained 227 points out of it, and even if you removed picks 2 & 3 from each side of the equation (to be used on a non-academy pick), we only lost 56 points - to gain that extra spot and the greater chance of getting who we wanted. If McGrath now goes #1, that's unfortunate, but hopefully we understood the risks. And we've still got pick #2. The point is to ensure that we get best value for it. So out of the possibles - McCluggage, Ainsworth or Taranto - GWS need to ascertain which has the most upside in respect of both quality as a player, and qualities as a bloke i.e. who's most likely to stay with the club.

Essentially, we traded #7, #33 and McCarthy for #2, and a chance at a very skilled player in this year's draft. As Peters17 said, we're still a chance to get McGrath, just have to wait until draft night to see. We do need to keep whoever we pick - that's probably my greatest fear after the last couple of years is wasting those picks/trades - so I can't fault the club if they had a lash at their dream player (McGrath) but settle for someone they consider most likely to stay and contribute strongly if it's Taranto). They just need to be right with that assessment!

My one concern about our list and I think this years draft will further execerbate it, is pace.

We have some speed in Shiel, Williams, Wilson and Scully but we have lost quick players in WHE, Pickett and Ahern.

Last year we brought in Hopper and Kennedy who are both slowish mids with limited agility and this year we are bringing in Taranto, Setterfield and Perryman who are all average paced.

When you look at Western Bulldogs and see their speed and agility it is a real point of difference. Similarly when you look at Geelong, Hawthorn and even Sydney and you see them frequently exposed through lack of speed.

We have exceptional skill and move the ball very well by hand and foot. We link play beautifully and move the ball quickly with this but not really via run and carry except maybe via Zac Williams and Nathan Wilson.

I do think we seriously need to look at bringing in some speed to our midfield and half forward line.

For that reason Ainsworth was really the selection for us this year in the absence of McGrath.

I'm at the same conclusion there must be more to mccaluage then written, how do you past up a rolls Royce

+1. After watching the youtube vids of Taranto I cannot see a player that screams out worth using pick 2 on. And then when you watch McCluggage its even harder to comprehend. He's even from out Cameron's way and would probably fit in with the pig shooter's group, this is baffling if it goes the way everyone is predicting.

Here's a thought.

Twomey (and the rest) does his final phantom based on what recruiters tell him. He's been bashing the academy all year. Maybe our recruiters have been telling furphies as a bit of pay back ? If mccluggage goes as 2 his whole order is ruined.

Or maybe he is a flight risk?

Has Quale put hers up yet? I'd trust hers more.

I think you're overthinking it a bit. :)

Based on the second half of the year Taranto is a top 5 talent and there have been many a player who have had cracking youtube clips who have never fired a shot and Pickett certainly comes to mind in that regard. That said can understand a bit of the frustration in us not rating McCluggage as highly as other clubs.

With ten live picks in tomorrow night's draft, anyone get the impression that we haven't lodged two of the re-signed contracts of Mohr/Downie/Simpson and won't until list lodgement after the draft? Gaming the system. :D

Actually
The AFL this year changed rules relating to the 'hidden picks' used by clubs to bank draft points, but the Giants can have an additional three picks due to an allowance given to clubs who traded in future picks in 2015 because when those deals were made the clubs didn't know the rules were set to be altered.

It's possible, but I was of the same view as captainMyCaptain - three extras from last year's future picks - except then why are we down one draft pick (should have 11 but only have 10)?

Faaaark! Well, I got him pretty wrong. I had him the other side of 50 ... still not sure why his star has seemed to go so bright after the end of the season. But good luck to him - presumably one of the SA teams are planning to pick him up?

Quayle has now written that Sydney is now a chance to bid on him with pick 9 which seems crazy to me.
