Well I sincerely hope for his sake that his prognosis isn't as bad as I'm led to believe ... I think he did manage to put together a couple of injury free seasons a couple of years ago, he is an elite talent. I do wonder if there is something amiss with the Gold Coast medical staff though, every year they seem to rack up a big injury list, is it simply a case of poor management, or bad luck (or both ?)

Interesting. I don't think it's that unlikely for us to get 2 top 10 picks. We will have this year's second rounder and next year's as well to offer teams like GWS and GC who need points for academy players. We will need to get rid of a player worthy of a second round pick. It's not a popular choice but Boekey seems to be the only realistic option.
The other point I wanted to discuss with you is about grabbing a KPF. While it's clear we're lacking quality in that department, we did just draft Charlie and Harry along with Silvagni. All three have potential to be quality KPFs. When we look at our midfield department, guys like Murphy, Daisy, Armfield and Gibbs are getting old. Which potential youngsters do we have to take up the spots and help Cripps? Kerridge is serviceable but not really exciting me too much to be honest, Cuningham has potential. After that we are really running low on decent mids. Gun mids once Murphy and Gibbs get past 30 years? Cripps and potentially Cuningham. In my opinion, we need to have 4 outright gun midfielders and another 6 decent ones after that if we want to be able to be in contention to win multiple flags. Yes, you also need to have a very solid defence, but I think we are developing that very well at the moment; and yes, you also need to have a dynamic forward line.
So, to sum up, we have already built the foundations for a very solid defence. We have already drafted 2 KPFs using two top ten picks last year. Now we need to build the gun midfield. So we have to be aggressive at the drafts and take no prisoners. We will require 2 top 10 picks this year and another 2 next year. So to do that, I think we're going to have to offer up 2 second round picks to either GWS or GC this year and keep our own pick. That sets us up for this year's draft. Then next year, we keep our first pick (whatever it ends up being, likely to be pick #5 - #9) and we offer up our 2018 first pick with steak knives to get a second top ten pick next year. That gives us 4 top ten picks in the next 2 drafts. By 2018, if all goes well, we will be pushing for finals and 2019-2022 we will be real contenders.
The only mids of the reportedly available ones out there that I would be remotely interested in would be Neale and D. Swallow, who in no way has been linked to us. Swallow also has injury concerns so this is a big go slow.
O'Meara hasn't been on the park for so long, he is an impractical risk given what he would cost. Prestia is also a good player, with some significant
injury issues of late. He is smallish and has been blessed by having the taggers go to Ablett and co, therefore inflating his figures a little.
Neale gets his own ball, and while small seems to be able to handle some attention. Surely we will hit the draft though.
I am still in favour of hitting the draft for three midfielders in the top 30 or so picks. I am not seduced by the thoughts of SPS, or even Brodie, or McCluggage, as we will be unlikely to have a top 4 pick. I do not want to draft another tall, as we have plenty developing. There is nothing to gain by taking another under developed young KPP. I see merit in both Tomlinson and Marchbank if they are within our reach, but want those young midfielders to develop.
In a practical sense I see Gallucci as the silk in our pick range, not huge but big enough, trained with us preseason. Like the profile of Simpkin as a forward/mid with pace and precision who can hit the scoreboard.
We need a couple of young bulls, the current rankings suggest Dylan Clarke and Joseph Atley are both good extractors in the second round range. We need a couple of irons in the fire for that role. They are the types we need to add to the dominant Crippa.
There are up to 10 young ruck prospects on the horizon this year, and I firmly believe we need one in the third round or so. Sweet and Goddard have been the highest raters, some chance they slip that far. English, Ladhams, Olango, Maze, Dennis and a few others have some admirers through to rookie range.
On exposed form Northern Blues Kerbatieh would be a good value pick as a forward/mid after missing a gig last year through tank and workrate concerns. Already "in our system".
If we can't snag a Tomlinson or Marchbank (maybe future 2nd rounder would get Tommo), we will need a state league or DFA swingman added to the mis in the draft or as a rookie.
With definite upgrade of Byrne and possibly Sheehan as well, we would have to be looking at 7 plus delistings, retirements or trades off the main list.
More intrigue at season's end

Murphy/Gibbs/E.Curnow have 3-5 years to go and Thomas has a year to go on his contract after this year- no reason to think he wouldn't play on if we wanted him to So the core midfield in terms of older players will be around for a while.
The task is to get Cuningham/Boekhurst/Kerridge/Lamb/DVR/Whiley up to the task of rotating as genuine improving on ballers - as well as using what picks we get to draft the right type of mid - we could do with a second monster type like Cripps- some are suggesting Charlie Curnow might be that bloke.
The Club has a coach who understands structure and how players need to move in defence and attack - the focus on individual type players as a need will diminish - and the ability of the Club to develop and bring in role players who can fit into the system will be worth many fancy pants high draft picks.
Bolton has demonstrated that so called reject players can play well at Carlton - this can't be underestimated in terms of how much more attractive Carlton will become over the next couple of years to players looking for a change.
I think the Club has bought itself the right kind of time through what Bolton has been able to achieve - the glaring weakness is the VFL development environment.

Couldn't agree more with that post, the VFL development program has been piss poor ever since we became The Northern Blues, as opposed to the Bullants.
From all reports though, Josh Fraser and the new coaching regime are off to a good start, unfortunately the seconds are being decimated by injuries right now, but it looks like we've got the VFL development program almost right now ...
Really need DVR to actually come and get some games, if he can't actually manage to crack it for a few games this season, it's hard to see him staying on the list.
I wonder if the form of Sumner and a couple of other surprise recruiting packets (like Matthew Wright) changes our list management strategy at the end of the season, don't think our list is as bad as I thought, and we may not have to trade in for as many draft picks this time around.
Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay are long term investments who will kick on and become valuable assets, patience and conservative man management with regards to their fitness/injuries is required.
But yes The Processes and instructions that Bolton and SOS are bringing to this footy club is extremely encouraging. Finals by 2019 is a realistic target/goal for us now, possibly 2018 ...

I'm not keen on getting Prestia over either. His knee has become chronic to the point where he's being flown interstate to see specialists on how to manage it and he's only marginally older than Docherty is. Considering his body weight and the amount of running he would do, how bad is it going to be 5 years from now? It wouldn't surprise me to see his career finish like Andrew Walkers has come 28-29.

I'm not a fan of taking Simpkin, (not high first round anyway) he-s going to miss all of this season so the only form we'll have to go off is his under 17 form and that is such a huge gap to AFL that its fraught with danger

Simpkin will still go top 20, but I dont think we should look at him until at least #15 or later. I dont want to flirt with someone who has missed the entire u18 season

It's really hard to tell what pick's we'll have so I havent had too much of a look into it.
Like the look of McLuggage, Battle, SPS, Bowes (GC) at the moment. Its hard to differentiate exactly between the other midfielders at the moment, i'll reserve most judgements till after the championships.

A rough list just familiarising myself with the players again would be, for the Blues;
1. Bowes (Utility, GC Academy)
2. Brodie (IM)
3. McLuggage (Utility)
4. Petrevski-Seton (Utility)
5. Powell-Pepper (IM)
6. Sharenberg (IM)
7. Battle (KP)
8. Scheer (IM)
9. Settlerfield (IM, GWS Academy)
If we keep our first, we'd be looking at at least one of those.
If we get a pick in the #12-17 range, we could maybe grab a slider from there, or another midfielder, maybe even a Simpkin in that space.
I know I'm not asking for much but in the next draft just get us more gun KPF, KDF, & Mid and I reckon we are on our way.
If we could get a settled back 6, things can start happening for us pretty quickly. I know Bolts is already trying to do this just needs 1 or 2 more pieces to help out Weitering, Plowman, Docherty, Bryne, Tuohy, (Jamo & Rowe probably ain't gonna get to our next final series) And also on my wishlist, I'd love us to be able find another Duigan type from SA / WA comp just like the Doggies have done this year with Adams (ready to go body for AFL)

We need to keep bringing in quality kids for limited cost and still keep top Draft picks. If we can get a Marchbank or Tomlinson for say a second/third rounder would be essential for list management. We are not in a position to get ready made established players who demand big money yet.

That's basically the GWS bundle trade we have been floating around.... If we finish low enough and can trade up into the first round for 2 picks this year plus add the GWS 3, then our first we put up for them next year would be pick 10 or higher you'd think with progression and could be a bargain. (The flip side being we do a Freo or GC and flunk out with injuries).
Draft a ruckman in the 4th round upgrade Byrne and maybe a couple of Mature rookies and things look great!

Malthouse said it's very hard to get players to come to CFC and at the time i couldn't argue with that.

All credit to Bolton for the job he's done thus far. We've been playing far better football than I expected to to. Playing much more as a team and defending as a team. All good things.
Still feel like the rebuild, in terms of ins and outs, could take a while. We've got about 5 players that at some point in the next couple of years will retire. Ive got no idea how the club will handle it, but we'll need players fwd, back and in the middle.
As a club we're not going to be able to do it all in this years draft.
