Unless we pay significant overs then none of these players will want to come to a club like Carlton which is so early in its development.. We would need to pay 20% more than what a Geelong, Hawthorn, Bulldogs will have to and if a player is chasing immediate success then even that might not be enough. This is why i would rather bank our salary cap until we are ready to pounce and take the best available midfielder in this draft.
You can only bank 5% correct? So banking isn't that viable I think, especially not over extended years.

And I disagree. I think we are looking very good, Bolton is a really positive influence and is well regarded, I think we'll have plenty of people wanting to come to us.

And if not. Go to the draft, just don't trade for Marchbank haha

Marchbank & Tomlinson to Carlton for our first-rounder is a done deal, might be a second or third rounder coming back our way as well.

The rationale behind this move is that the draft watchers don't believe the pool of players will be as deep as originally thought so anything outside of the Top 4 are going to be somewhat speculative. The Blues believe they will finish higher than that and would rather take the two readymade players instead of a young newbie.

This also means that the overall strategy in regards to the trading of certain players as well as what happens with our second & third round picks will have changed as well.

A 'done deal' in May. :straining:

Well there you have it folks.

Welcome to Carlton Caleb & Adam!

If Carlton waste our first pick on Marchbank WE WILL NOT progress up the ladder as we should.

We NEED a young midfielder who will walk into our best 22 - straight away.
From the GWS Board, Tomlinson is an inside mid:

Thommo's problem is that he wants to be a forward. Trouble is, he's only average at best in that position. I always thought he was at his best when roaming that outer wing and being the link between back and forward. Runs all day and can turn his hands to most things. In the NEAFL game in the weekend where he racked up 52:eek: - a lot of that was as an inside mid (biggest bloody inside mid I've ever seen, Brisbane boys didn't stand a chance)

Consequently he is a jack of all trades and a master of none.

His best position is wherever he is needed - because he'll do a job.

But that, of course, is not what he wants.

You've chilled out in the space of a page. :p

If it's something like Pick 8 with their 2nd round pick coming back, that's awesome for us.
I like the aquisition of Tomlinson, i've always been keen to add Tomlinson, not Marchbank though.

Tomlinson is a must target for Carlton because I think we will get him for below value and he will improve our side. The same cannot be said for Marchbank.

Couldnt disagree more.

We would have our backline sorted for a decade, and the makings of a solid forward line.

Mids we can get, and they slot in pretty much straight away (unlike the talls).

Id rather load up on talls in year 1 of the rebuild, and grab mids in years 2 and 3, than the other way around.

With you here Mal.

My only worry is that we end up like an Easter egg.

Nothing on the inside.

We rated Marchbank top 5 in his draft year and GWS ranked him at 6.......obviously.

Both teams rated him above Lever for his flexibility and I don't think he's done anything to suggest that the quality isn't there.

Intriguing.....Done Deal ??????

I have made no secret of my desire to hit the draft for midfielders.............but

If it indeed is a done deal, it strongly suggests that we rate one or more of our current players and/or
Tomlinson or Marchbank as midfielders.

Charlie Curnow and Casey Byrne are two that come readily to mind. Plowman has been suggested as
having midfield prospects, even Weitering played midfield as a kid, and has the skills, I also floated
the outside possibility of SOS having some midfield potential some time ago. Expect Sumner to enter
the mix with a preseason behind him. We do need some "silk" though.

For those questioning Marchbank......don't. Absolute gun in the making, slightly undersized KPD, but
skills, smarts, commitment and mobility are elite.

We have Rowe for the gorillas for a year or two, then enter Jesse Glass-McCasker.

If we have the midfield "sussed" then I could support the deal.

Its scary to think if thats true then GWS will have 5 first round picks
They are basically drafting, developing and releasing on our behalf. How about a little appreciation for their efforts?

i'm all for renewing our list but remember we don't have the same currency as last year. 10 cuts / retirements means we have to rely on either sweetheat multi deals again, dfas or really scraping the draft in the later rounds.

we did very well last year but it's not a given we can package like that again.
Do you think the Giants will take unlimited pizza & lamb kebabs on Lygon as trade bait?

Starting to think the MC and Bolton have put a line through Nick Graham, if he keeps getting close to BOG every week in the VFL and not getting a call up to the seniors, that's pretty much alarm bell ringing time. Think he's contracted for another season, but it's hard to see him not being traded or delisted after then, and it's a shame because he's worked pretty hard and seems like a nice lad, but unfortunately, he isn't the line breaking, gut running midfield option that we need.

Yep, unfortunately some players just aren't in the coaches plans. He reminds me of Tom Curran at St Kilda. Continually dominating the VFL but never getting a proper shout.
