One individual swallowing up 7% of the salary cap........playing in the 2's........ and all is fine? Don't believe that.
Their ladder position suggests otherwise. Who do you see them missing out on due to Boyd? The salary cap is going up a fair bit and that 7% will be less. Don't be surprised to see $15mill over 10 years being thrown around to Jesse Hogan.

Edit: Info about CBA & salary cap from 2017 onwards here:

Boyds salary was heavily front loaded which suited them fine. In the next year or two they will move some of the space to sort out appropriate contracts for Bont, Stringer et al. ;)

sorry harker. unlike you. very very short term thinking and logic
Think this is a bit unfair on Harker. Boyd signed a 7 year $7m contract of which 2015 salary was low (payout Griffen). So more than $1m pa now.
A lot of pain to come for WBD if he does not improve as it is a big % of salary cap, but also demotivates his team mates who will know he is taking cap space.

Could get ugly unless Cap does increase as per...

dont look at the worth of an individual. look at the worth of the group.

as for us, the contracts of jones thomas dick tutt plus our poor drafting and recruiting over the past decade certainly dont put us in a position to criticise.
Sadly have to agree CFC has stuffed up.

Will be interesting to see if our mistakes can be cleaned up in 3 years of rebuild.

Tom Boyd is still 20. Im pretty confident in a few years he's gonna be a gun.
More like a Cannon! Boyd is a 20 year old KPP who can seriously play. He wasn't the standout number 1 draft pick in his draft year for nothing. And anyone who can't see tgat is either dilusional or sees 'what they want to see'...wish he was in Navy Blue.

Mate, I'd have him and I'd play him - but for a considerably smaller salary that what he's on now. So it wont happen.

Sorry soapy....you're wrong.

Did you know that Beveridge was happy to move Boyd on last year, should the right situation present?

Whose logic are you alluding to? Mine or Beveridges? Work it out.

Yes, we could write a 5,000 page thesis on our drafting / list management blunders over the past 15 years. Doesn't mean others can't be critiqued.

The worth of the group is very high, that's the problem they have (not sure why you have used that to support your argument), this contract is going to negatively affect them unless this kid becomes close to an A-grade forward. Doggies wouldn't go near that deal with a 50 foot pole right now.

This is what I'm scared about with Harry McKay, I see blues supporters writing him off after a year or 2 because he hadn't done anything. He needs time as does Boyd. I also think Boyd is going to be seriously good in a few years

What are you talking about?
Boyd's first year at the Dogs was on minimum draftee wage & bonuses.

This is his first year where the real money kicked in.

this year and next year he will be paid $1.4m for each. there is provision to extend the contract dollars out over a longer period if he stays. he will only be 26 when current contract ends. i remember similar comments about tom scully

So now we're talking about numbers? O.K.
Boyd was touted as being on a 6 million contract for 7 years. Some said more but let's go skinny.

His first year under the draftee rules, he would have topped 200K, leaving 5.8mil for 6 years........fair to say 1 mil a year? I think so.
So this year he's being paid ~one million dollars to play in the 2's and Beveridge would be happy, going forward? :)

There has been talk of Boyd accepting a reduction in salary. He may accept that and if for no other reason, than fair play.
He's not a million dollar a year player this year and he won't be next year........Scary numbers that could end up putting a noose around a clubs neck.

yours. seems that people are making a career decision on a 20 year old kid who is a long way from his best. i am sure the people in charge know more than any of us. long way to go yet.

gordon said last week there would be no reduction to contract. i wouldnt expect boyd or pickering to accept any pay cuts. why would they. i cant believe the dogs would ask. he's 20 and improving. looked good to me at the start of the year before injury.

Big forwards take time, no doubt there. The difference with McKay is that he won't start earning those dollars until he proves he is worth it. Boyd is about to turn 21 and is in his third year so there is plenty of time for him to prove his worth, but just because someone can dominate juniors doesn't necessarily mean they will dominate seniors.

I put forward what I had but that carries no value. Fair enough.

I guess if we had Boyd emulating Liam Jones in the 2's, we'd all be O.K. with that............but he's younger?

Read the Dogs board for how they feel for his performance through the 2's.
Please remember that this is a player commanding 7% of the salary cap and not 2%. You have to understand what that means in the scheme of things.

thats not it. i just dont agree and think people are being harsh. as for comparing him to jones? i think we just agree to disagree. personally i think what the dogs did showed a club prepared to back itself and head in the right direction. i dont see it as an issue at all

He may go from zero to hero tomorrow. It happens, but right now there are many doubts upon a 1mil a year player not playing in the seniors.

If I was Beveridge, I would be wondering whether 2 key 500K players may be of more worth to the whole (for many reasons) than for 1 player using up 1000K. It sort of makes sense and this is what Beveridge was wondering last year, so what has changed for him to think otherwise this year?

On what genuine authority do we have this GWS 4 v.2 trade? I understand GWS need to cull their list but Steele and Marchbank (maybe Tomlinson) could each draw first rounders from other clubs. SOS does have the connection but surely demand would indicate they could do better than a first and second rounder for the 4.

Still will be tough trade to get across the line. They don't want to lose Marchbank and Steele but at the same time realise there will be salary cap casualties, they will put offers to these guys no doubt but will it be enough to keep them? There is only so much salary they can spend and they have other highly talented players who are probably a bigger priority.

Saints (among others) are also very keen on those two. The thing is, clubs will be very apprehensive about using a first rounder on just one of those players, that's where a package deal can be beneficial.

I suppose the question for GWS, is what happens if those deals with other clubs fall through, or are difficult to get through? GWS needs the points, they might value certainty over potential value.
