He is actually worth something for a club like the Lions who are desperate for experienced defenders. I find it funny that people think he isn't worth anything but are deadest happy for us to keep him. Its kind of very contradictory thinking IMO.

It's more that the value people expect to get for him (e.g. 4th round pick), it's more advantageous to just keep him..

He is worth far more to us than we would ever get in return.. Why would Brisbane who are in a similar development mode to us want a 29yo defender?

OK, how's this:

- He is not worth anything at the draft table

- He should be a depth player in 2017, ousted in favour of a player (Marchbank) who can dispose of the ball without panicking.

The best backlines are mobile and flexible. Weltering, Marchbank, Plowman, Byrne, Tuhoy, Simmo and Doc is an outstanding backline.

I would be happy to offer Morabito a one year deal on minimal salary with an option for extending. No doubting the guy has talent if he can get his body right. I would certainly be happy to give him a shot.

I'm inclined to agree with you in that instead of bring in the young longshots at the dry end of the player pool I'd rather see us roll the dice and snap up some bargain DFA's etc. Bring in the kids using those early numbers at the Draft of course. It's a risk/ reward thing and I sense that we need some experienced smarts within the group to bring these kids through and develop their mental readiness. Talent alone won't get us there.

havent seen him for a while but a few years ago i thought he would be a good key forward
Likewise. He fell well down the pecking order.

Wouldn't cost much and provides a more mature body that can kick straighter. Don't expect he'd be a superstar but would think he'd improve on most of our forwards.

I have said it twice, the Lions are desperate for experienced defenders. For the Lions, that makes Rowe worth something. If people are happy to keep him around while our young defenders develop, then he has value to us. For that reason alone, it is very easy to make the argument he also has the same value for the Lions, and that makes him worth something to us, does it not? You cant argue that he only has value to us and no one else.

I agree the cost benefit, or risk/reward on offering Morabito a minimal contract is very much in our favour if he can come good, if he doesn't come good then we haven't lost anything for taking the chance on him.

Haha, yes unfortunately it's not just our forward line that is complete shit.
Which is why we need to concentrate on getting our midfield up a level in quality.

It's not contradictory thinking, it is just the reality that in the modern game with free agency, teams don't want to give much for a player of his age when they can target other players without having to give any pick away.

Not worth a pick under 30 surely.

It's a lazy argument because you're using average disposals to establish the value of a key forward.

Disposals alone shouldn't be used to determine the value of any player, let alone a key forward who naturally gets less of the ball.

Of far greater significance is what he does with the ball.

I don't disagree with you that Levi is hugely disappointing but there are far more accurate ways to demonstrate that than by simply pointing to the average number of disposals he has per game.

Why you chose to add Daw to the comparison is baffling. Firstly .3 of a disposal is an immaterial amount, secondly they don't play the same role so a direct comparison between the two is completely irrelevant.

Number of touches is important, as is efficiency, and number of goals kicked, and number of tackles, etc etc etc.
It is a balance.

I propose we take O'Meara, Marchbank, Steele and Ahern all at firesale prices and give them long term deals.

In 2021 when they can actually play, we'll go from the worst to the greatest midfield ever seen. Minstrels will bards will sing of our great feats and arts will be produced the world over.
Meanwhile, a couple more swimming pools appear at doctors' houses in Toorak.
