I think you're 100% correct about the run and quick ball movement from the half back. IIRC there were stats that indicated we were terrible in the second half at scoring from out of defence. We all know Johnson was a huge loss, but I think a few others are only now realising how good Duffield has been as a distributor. I guess he just ran out of legs and a weakness like that makes it too easy for opposition runners to break you open.
Ross also referred to a lack of spread - I can only wonder whether there was something about our stoppages that got worked out. Skill v application is a favourite topic here (usually cast as plodders v silky skills), however I notice that after round 12 last year Freo was leading the comp in kicking efficiency. The reason Sandi and A Pearce had such high efficiencies wasn't because they are magnificent kicks, it's because a lot of other things are working right - teammates in space, not being pressured to kick when we don't want them to etc.

This. Perhaps the sacrificial running that Lyon referred to in the Duffield interview will help the kicking efficiency. Too many players were static (standing, walking) on the field when they didn't have the ball towards the end of last season. It makes it hard for a player to be spotted by the kicker if they aren't creating a target by moving quickly.

thats what I really notice. particularly toward the end of the year. It was like players were afraid to take responsibility and so no one was leading or creating a target.
Sometimes I think if Sandi or Clarke or Fyfe doesn't mark the kick out from a point we just fall apart and kick back and forth across the ground or try to hit the line.

My sentiments exactly E Shed. We have an awful lot of players who have the courage to take a hit for the team, back into a pack, chase and tackle - but very few who have the courage to take the game on and break lines. Stephen Hill, Nat Fyfe, David Mundy come to mind in the midfield, but we seem to have become incredibly timid coming out of defense. We will bang it along the boundary to a contest, but won't take the risky corridor option or run a line, beat a man and open the ground up.

I remember early last year when we would occasionally take the kick out after a point hit someone 50 metres out in the corridor - we had a number of coast to coast goals from that play, but then we just stopped.

It's not a play you should use often, but just often enough to have the opposition thinking maybe we won't kick it to the man deep in the back pocket and allow ourselves to be hemmed in.

So agree. Was it just me who got a bit frustrated that we never seemed to look at the centre corridor when coming out of defence in the NAB2 game? I get the whole skinny and fat side mentality but with our contested dominating midfield sometimes I wish we'd take the risk up the guts rather than slowing the ball movement down switching and swinging it around either wing every time. Or at least have it as an option for our defenders to use. I thought Adelaide were superb when they ran it up through the centre corridor as a wave.

No you weren't! I am a firm believer that the shortest route between two points is a straight line. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation as to why we take so long to move the ball out of the backline, maybe allows us time to move the zone or something, but man it is ever so frustrating. People have criticized Tom Sheridan for dropping that mark in the Hawthorn final last year, but the ball should NEVER have come backward to him. What were we doing, protecting our deficit? :)

In NAB 2 we kicked an own goal moving the ball backwards and just missed a second - so it's not an isolated thing.

Hopefully we are foxing and come the real thing we will roll out our "real" game plan which involves Stephen Hill, David Mundy, Tome Sheridan, Cam Sutcliffe and Michael Walters breaking through the centre of the ground and opening up opposition defences like ours was opened up on Sunday.

That will get us our 100 points a game ;)

I can't remember the game late last year. But Hill had the ball 50m out and rather going for a shot he passed off to one of our players who had a defender already hanging off him. The confidence of the whole team was gone.

I'm not going to bag Ross because I love him, but sometimes I think he is just too rigid in enforcing his game plan. I remember last year when Barlow snapped a miraculous goal from the pocket and Ross said (jokingly, I'm sure) that he should have followed team rules and centered it to the top of the square. For me, my game plan would be any time one of our players is moving forward and within kicking distance in the corridor TAKE THE SHOT. At worst we get a chance to lock the ball in from a kick-out and I reckon there is more chance of a goal in that situation than in a mad scramble at the top of the square.

Anyway, hopefully with the new assistant coaches we have brought in we will get a bit more of that Hawthorn attacking flair into our game. If we can do that and keep our defensive structures we will be an awesome prospect...

Does anyone remember Ballas' low flat penetrating kick out of the back pocket into the corridor in nab 1 right onto someone's chest?
It was a thing of beauty and it opened them right up (admittedly against tiger cubs), we need more of those.

Major announcement coming according to Freo's snapchat/twitter.
Will be made at the season launch, commencing at 730.

Would make a new thread, however being a newbie unable to create a new one.

This should go over well on the main board, I was expecting him to be coaching Gold Coast or GWS by now.
cue 20 pages of bitter Saints fans and every other teams supporters now resorting to the only jibes they have left which is Lyons failure to win a premiership and or our boring game style.

Good interview. He's trying to evolve as a coach, trying to build relationships with players a bit more and delegate more.

Did anyone grab a listen to Hackdorn on PR Sun morning. His take on the Lyon's contract ext was that Freo have realised they are into a slide and have no chance of the top 4 this year and that Lyon was given the extra time to rebuild to a cup. Interesting concept considering Ross has stated we are in the season,s cup chance up to our necks . Also Hackdorns take dispells the opinions that Ross can't rebuild a side. Three questions ,are we out of the top 4 race and can Ross rebuild a side with minimal damage to our future finals hopes or is Hackdorn full of shit?

The latter seems most likely.
It stills amazes me that he has a job at all, in any other profession a failure rate like his would have seen him out the door.
