OK forget about Essendon getting pick 1 and all the other stuff, that's just policy decisions that people disagree with.

This and the Geelong deal are a whole new level of stuff up, of Biblical proportions. The other clubs should be ropable, and public, about this. This is just Not On.

And the AFL has to reverse it.

They do not make mistakes. The original wording was put there to guard against non Victorian teams trying to cheat. But when it is to the benefit of a Victorian team, wording get misinterpreted so they can change the outcome. Point in question: When Essendon got penalised 2 first and 2 second round picks for doping, they complained that that would stop them from acquiring a FS. So the VFL said " Sorry, we forgot about that. You can have one first round back for that."
P.S.- The action in the quoted words may not have happened exactly as stated, but the end result is correct.
Didn't they then get Jake Long in the rookie draft anyway? So it was a completely BS excuse anyway.

AFL Statement on Jaeger O’Meara trade

The AFL is aware that the recent trade of Jaeger O’Meara didn’t meet our own rules.

In considering this, the AFL decided to adopt its Close Enough Policy.

The Close Enough Policy is a key pillar in our ‘Making It Up As We Go Along’ Legal Framework, now in its 33rd year.

Considering the trade, within these parameters, the AFL came to the conclusion that changing anything would be a massive pain.

The AFL also considered that the club receiving O’Mera was Victorian and more specifically, Hawthorn.

We, therefore, interpreted the rule to achieve our preferred outcome in this circumstances.

By ‘interpreting’, the AFL means ignoring the rule and just saying something else.

In this case, Hawthorn traded something they couldn’t, but we just decided they had other things, and hey, we made up these rules so we can ignore them.

Like when you say you won’t eat the whole tub of ice cream but you do anyway. We’re just like you really, except this is meant to be a billion-dollar professional industry.

We hope this clears up the situation.

Go Hawks!

So what do we, as members of one of the biggest supporter bases do about it?

Ive just about had enough.
I've said it over and over again and always get shot down, but put simply money talks - and while we all like to complain a lot we're (everyone who follows the AFL) shoveling money into the machine as eagerly as ever and that is all they care about.

The league has serious integrity issues, that's for sure.

- Forced to accept sanctions against Essendon, despite their best efforts to avoid it.
- The Hawthorn free kick saga.
- The Western Bulldogs free kick saga.
- The 2016 Grand Final was compromised at best, rigged at worst.
- Allow a breach of trading/drafting rules to suit Geelong.
- Allow a breach of trading/drafting rules to suit Hawthorn.

These are just a few things in recent memory, among multiple examples of a competition very much governed by a VFL mindset.

The almighty dollar rules, as do residual values from a Victorian based competition. I've been following AFL footy and the Crows for close to 25 years now, since I was a little fella. It's so ingrained that it's hard to say this, but I'm seriously waning in my enthusiasm. It doesn't feel like a fair and equitable competition, it feels rigged. The Grand Final this year felt like close to the final straw for me. How much longer can it go on?

These are my sentiments exactly. If I did not have a family membership I would be giving AFL away. No bullshit.

Equalisation policy.

Equalisation policy.
They have problems accepting that their role in the league should be to administrator of a fair and equitable (and profitable) league where the results will be what they will be, determined by a combination of who runs their club best and plain luck.

Instead, what we have is a situation where they are constantly throwing their oar in the water, tweaking rules like father-son to suit, changing policies on the run to best suit the big Victorian clubs, and turning a blind eye when their preferred clubs breach the rules, while enforcing harsh penalties when others do so.

Imagine if we'd pulled what Hawthorn did to get O'Meara?! He'd be back at the Gold Coast by now, and we'd be excluded from the next three trade periods or drafts.

and it's easy to make it all wash when every journo in the country has to look after their AFL accreditation.

You left out the Whitfield drug testing issue.... Whilst we are still yet to see what comes of it, I don't get why Melbourne tanking, individuals get sanctioned, Crows Tippet deal, club (and individuals) gets sanctioned. And no talk of GWS getting anything over the Whitfield issue despite two club officials being up to their eyes in it...

Why aren't GWS staring down the barrel of two years draft sanctions (....at least)?

The Essendon stuff don't even get me started. The AFL still hasn't even issued anything condemning what went on! Their public statements have all been about supporting the club and players, and they have worked their socks off to mitigate the WADA sanctions so that they had as little impact as possible. the club should have been kicked out of the league over that $hit.

Well, Hawthorn broke the rules so they should be penalised. Doesn't matter that the AFL screwed up, Hawthorn knew or should have known what they were doing. GCS for that matter, too.

Won't happen of course, just saying.

The other clubs need to raise absolute hell about this - on top of Geelong's dodgy deal.

Wasn't there a similar glossing over of the rules for Geelong. Which made it hard for us in our Gibbs trade?
If so it's a ****ing farce. If none of the other clubs get on to this it's a real sign of pissweak administrations across the entire league. It's so rigged like living in ****ing Zimbabwe under Mugabe FFS.

Can't be too mad at Hawthorn though. They could put in an application asking for 12 first round picks next year and if the AFL says yeah sure...

Reversing the trade would be a really awkward solution given the domino effect with other trades. It won't just be Hawthorn copping it. And punishing Hawthorn isn't fair because the AFL approved it.

What's the equitable solution here?
