Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

Always tough to rank players in different positions, this is my best 22 of the draft so far

B: Tom Stewart (Pick 40, 58 games) – Jack Henry (RD Pick 16, 36 games) – Luke Ryan (Pick 66, 46 games)
HB: Alex Witherden (Pick 23, 44 games) – Josh Battle (Pick 39, 22 games) – Andrew McGrath (Pick 1, 56 games)
C: Jy Simpkin (Pick 12, 49 games) – Jarrod Berry (Pick 17, 48 games) – Jack Bowes (Pick 10, 38 games)
HF: Zac Fisher (Pick 27, 49 games) – Oscar McInerney (RD Pick 37, 28 games) – Sam Petrevski-Seton (Pick 6, 57 games)
F: Brandan Parfitt (Pick 26, 47 games) – Nick Larkey (Pick 73, 12 games) – Will Hayward (Pick 21, 51 games)
R: Rowan Marshall (RD Pick 10, 26 games) – Tim Taranto (Pick 2, 52 games) – Hugh McCluggage (Pick 3, 55 games)
I: Sam Powell-Pepper (Pick 18, 51 games) – Oliver Florent (Pick 11, 47 games) – Ben Ainsworth (Pick 4, 37 games) – Cameron Zurhaar (RD Pick 11, 21 games)

There's no real proper key defenders so far so I've had to go with the undersized Henry and Battle at the posts.

Gone early on Larkey because there isn't really any competition - I like him more than Cox and Ratugolea so far and I've gone early on Zurhaar after a couple of bags against lowly teams because it shows he has X-factor and I have no doubt he'll be a great forward over the years.

Lipinski, Bolton, Callum Brown, Esava and Willie Rioli are all knocking on the door

McGrath playing more middle & Bowes more defence these days i think (admittedly have missed the last month of Suns games)

Thats not a bad side other than the lack of key defenders.

I'd have Taranto just ahead of McCluggage at this stage although it's tough comparing them as they have different strengths.

Does anyone else really not rate Hayward? Seems to be a dumb, soft footballer.

Has had a terrible season.

Has stagnated massively this year. He seems really soft at this stage.

Taranto should be AA this year. Clearly best from this draft

Taranto is clearly #1 at this point in time
Taranto and Battle were my 2 preferences coming into the draft with 1 & 19.
Was surprised Battle slipped so far.

Very stoked Ridley fell to us (had him top 10).
McGrath is great. But damn Taranto is something else. Like new fyfe...but with kicking boots.

Clearly ahead of everyone else except McCluggage. An argument could be made for both. McCluggage the higher ceiling IMHO
We’re talking about right now, and Taranto is definitely ahead. He probably should be All-Australian or borderline at worst, McCluggage has been great but not as great.

Mod note: this post and associated replies were moved from the thread about Will Setterfield.

Due to the low cost, was always going to be worth it.

However still absolutely miles off the other players considered potential number ones of his year in McGrath and McCluggage.

16 career games largely thanks to an injury will have something to do with that.

It was evident via this pre-season just what he's capable of.
Health being well and a full pre-season should bring out the best in him,.

Probably to be expected after starting his career with a knee reco, at the club with arguably the strongest midfield in the comp.

Confident he has McGrath covered long term, who is more a half-back flanker anyway. McCluggage and Taranto look to be the best 2 by a fair way atm.

McGrath has barely improved since his first season. I’d actually be reasonably concerned if I was an Essendon supporter given the development of Taranto and McCluggage, and the latter was the obvious choice as the best player in the draft pool.

Setterfield has been building nicely, and he’s finally regained that confidence he had as a junior, and executing some really slick manoevres. His pickup on the run under pressure yesterday was freakish.

Then you’re a fool, plain and simple.

No sir, I am not.

I have maintained my observations of McGrath since his draft year. Great linebreaker with a penetrating kick and strong runner, but I just think his appetite for the contested work and overall football IQ are still a work in progress.

This places him well behind Taranto and McCluggage, as things currently stand.

But this is a discussion about Will Setterfield, who will soon move into that echelon of players, health permitting.
