It's the 2016 'draft' not 2016 'elite player selection'

I've flagged this before, but no matter who you think was in the best picks, a draft can be best measured on their contribution to your side as a whole - number of games played amongst the list you drafted.

This is why the 2016 draft is basically the only reason we're not Bottom 4 right now.

Pick 26 - Brandan Parfitt
Pick 40 - Tom Stewart
Pick 43 - Esava Ratugolea
Pick 60 - Quinton Narkle
Rookie Pick 16 - Jack Henry
Rookie Pick 33 - Zach Guthrie
Rookie Pick 53 - Sam Simpson
Cat B Rookie - Mark O'Connor

The above has already played a whopping 521 games between them - and most of them (bar Stewart) still have a long career left. People can have their Boltons or McLuggages or Tarantos - I'm still taking this draft as a whole over any individual player, given just how fruitful it's been, and just how many really solid players we got out of it.

Shai reminds me of Steven Motlop in his early days at Geelong, IMO. Has the ability to turn a game, has talent coming out of his ass, but it will be up to him whether he ever actually realizes that talent and becomes a superstar - or if he just does the flashy things and coasts along, and ends up being another in a long line of 'oh what could they have been?'

Freo also love this draft

Pick 8 -Griffin Logue
Pick 9 - Will Brodie (Didn't draft him but got him now)
Pick 38 - Sean Darcy
Pick 41 - Brennan Cox
Pick 66 - Luke Ryan

Thats nearly a spine from this draft

Couple of rookie draft picks that had AFL talent but just couldn't do make it too in Duman and Strnadica (Nads just got picked up at WCE tho)

Absolutely it's a 'spine' - given Cox can play forward and Ryan and Darcy are elite!

Add Stengle (playing with us now) and Jamaine Jones (played with us but now at WC and dramatically improved) as well, if we're using that sort of system, and this draft gets even more ridiculous, haha

Logue was dropped this week though. Pretty poor for a pick 8 six years in. Brodie seems like he's playing well though.

Team balance, we were running like 7 defenders taller than 188cms it didn't work

Logue is a good player but we can't just pick our best players, sometimes you have to balance the team up

Bit like how weid can't get a game ahead of Brown, Tmac and Jacko except in the backline for us

1. Taranto

Really? From what I've seen Logue has been fairly underwhelming.

Yeah, I’ve been a big supporter of his his but there’s no denying a pick 8 should be a lock at this stage. He has incredible athletic traits and has had some terrific games but he has mental lapses or makes some horrific mistakes at times.

There’s still hope there because of his athleticism but he could find himself being purely depth if he doesn’t string it all together soon

I'd have Jack Henry FARRR ahead of some of the last 5 or so in that list, IMO. Already been Runner up B+F, and probably better than Parfitt at this stage - and definitely has done more than Lipinski, SPP, Battle, Ainsworth etc.

Respectfully disagree, is a good lockdown defender and can play tall or small

Out of form this year a little bit but he has been good in previous years

There have been times when Charlie Cameron has cut us up then we send Logue to him in the second half and keep him goalless, can also play on the talls, is a unique defender

Geez I must of skipped Henry missed him. He’d def be top 10 for me.

I reckon Perryman gets a bit underrated here. Seems like a very consistent HBF that does a consistent job week in week out. Probably better than Berry at least from my own team. I'd rate him probably around the 10 or low teens mark

I've got him at 15 on my list right now, but he could definitely end up being higher - as he's such a gun who can play multiple positions. Needs some Top 5 B+F finishes, IMO, in order to get up the list a bit more

EDIT: Should be ahead of Berry, so I'll put him at 14 - which is serendipitous given that's where he was drafted, haha

I like English's chances of moving up this ladder over the next couple of years. Strong start to the season, was dominant last week and is starting to find a lot of the ball around the ground playing an intercept role, as well as his clearance numbers going through the roof (6th in the league right now, averaging 7.33 per game).

Rucking is still a work in progress, but is notably stronger this year in holding his ground and will evolve to probably be good, not great in that department.

Good call but I think Cumming is overtaking him .... had a great Start to the year after a really solid 2021

Rowan Marshall is the one criminally underrated here imo. Excellent Ruckman or stay at home forward. An absolute weapon. I’ve got him easily ahead of Bolton for one
