Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

Lol - mistake. It’s a re-do thread and I’m taking him in the top 25. Long way to go before it’s a mistake.

I’m tipping Matho gets closer to 25 than McGrath does 1 in this thread. Now that’s a mistake!!

Huh? What are you alluding to here Bill? Not once did I say McGrath was 1?

jade did...

Pidge may be in a few years.
He might not.

Macrae and Dunkley may improve even more.
They might not.

Pidge may improve to Jackson's and Josh's level.
He might not.

At the end of the day, it's all guesswork and the probabilities and pissabolities that come with footy.

These discussions are good but they're not gonna bruise a grape.

I'd take McGrath over bailey smith and Caleb Daniel every single time and as of right now he is a better Player then Naughton, although Naughton has a huge scope (one that i don't think he will ever reach IMO), people are getting carried away now and going overboard with this, McGrath is still a very good young player, Not the best in the draft sure but he'd still be going top 5.

Ahhhhh BigFooty.

Never change.
But seriously though. Definitely wouldn’t even think about trading the 18 year old Bailey Smith for McGrath. And it’s not just the eye test either. You have a look at the stats to compare them and you wonder how Mcgrath has 3 years on this bloke.

The McGrath talk is getting a bit silly now. Sure Taranto and McCluggage are looking the better prospects but it’s not a Tambling over Buddy type bad call. McGrath won a rising star and has been steadily improving since.

He's been best 22 since literally the day he walked in the door, won a rising star, and is a likely (as in, not possible, but likely) club captain in the making.

People on BigFooty are ****ing absurd. He's worth more than most of your kids you teeny tiny peasants.

Dyson Heppell once won a rising star. So did Lewis Taylor. And just like Heppell and Taylor, he’s improved f**k all since.

And he will follow in Heppell’s footsteps in being named captain of Essendon and proving you don’t have to have any improvement at all in your footy to be considered a captain at Essendon.

Oh almighty one, since you know how all 21 year olds careers will finish up, please tell me how many Brownlows Taranto will win so I can put money on it. Nobody knows how any of the kids in this draft will end up all we can do is speculate.

For the record though Heppell got an All-Australian nod, putting he and Lewis Taylor in the same bracket is a fair stretch.

He's a good young player. Is he worthy of the number 1 pick ahead of McLuggage and Taranto? Time will only tell. But saying that you'd take McGrath over Macrae (top 10 midfielder in the comp), Dunkley (one of the best inside midfielders), Naughton (best young key position player and second in the comp in contested marks), English (is widely considered to have the potential of Grundy), Bailey Smith and Johanissen is laughable. Even Hunter, Daniel an Libba are players that may be picked before McGrath, even considering potential.

Don't dig yourself a hole my friend.

McGrath is being played out of position this year, playing wing which wasn’t a spot he played in his junior year. For some reason Woosh doesn’t want to pull the trigger on him as a stoppage mid and our gun rebound defenders mean that McGrath can be used elsewhere and I have no doubts he would be killing it as a rebound defender this year.

McCluggage, Taranto and Setterfield are playing in the positions the excelled in at 18s level and it shows.

Lol Theres so many things wrong with this response. I know more about your club than you do.

1. O'Connor is keeping out Touhy? Wrong. Injured - hasnt even returned through VFL.

2. Henry keeping out Henderson? Wrong, he's just returned from injury on the weekend.

Venables is a premiership player. Jy's played 40 games - he had 27 touches and 2 goals, 2 days ago.

'Based on current form' Parfitt is averaging 17 touches this year as a midfielder..... That 'current form' is below average.

Venables a Premiership player so what ?

Arguably worst performance since Cameron Moody's no touch Premiership player . 4 touches all day .

2-Clug
3-McGrath
4-Stewart
5-English
6-SPS
7-Berry
8-Setterfield
9-Marshall
10-Zurhaar
11-Witherden

edit - added Witherden back in

Ill max out at a top 20 for now.
Solid draft this. I was a big fan of Ridley's in his draft year. Retraining as a wingman in the VFL. Expect him on this list eventually.

PLenty more quality kids.

Probably to be expected after starting his career with a knee reco, at the club with arguably the strongest midfield in the comp.

Confident he has McGrath covered long term, who is more a half-back flanker anyway. McCluggage and Taranto look to be the best 2 by a fair way atm.

Not directly aimed at your post but the theme throughout is recognising those on well performing teams . Much harder to get recognition with strugglers .

I dunno what the relevance is of the rest of the dogs’ list (or Heppell for that matter), aside from Jade ’s digging.

As far as Essendon’s pick at the top of this draft we took the player we wanted the most that was available at the pick we had. I don’t think there are too many players in any draft who were later rated at the pick they went at. Andy is a very impressive player and a pretty impressive person as well. Very driven and personable sort of guy, leads by example and inspires others.

He isn’t the big bodied mid many Essendon fans thought they needed at the time of the 2016 draft but we seem to be doing just fine without Setterfield or McCluggage, who were meant to be the three we had to choose from at the time. Instead we filled that need with Dylan Clarke at pick 63 and now that he’s starting to put together a run of games at AFL level I don’t think many of us are disappointed at all.

You can’t be serious saying you’d take johannissen over mcgrath. Has been average for the past couple of years and he’s not going to get any better
