Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

You can’t be serious saying you’d take johannissen over mcgrath. Has been average for the past couple of years and he’s not going to get any better
Right. So one player out of how many that I’ve questionably rated ahead of McGrath? Realistically he’s achieved a hell of a lot more than him with his Norm Smith Medal alone. Anyway, the point stands. Jade is deluded if he rates McGrath higher than anyone on the bulldog list, “not named Bont.”

Not sure how long since (or if i have) posted a redo list.

Close to end of 2019 assessment (still an element of potential here)

1-Taranto
2-Clug
3-McGrath
4-Stewart
5-English
6-SPS
7-Berry
8-Setterfield
9-Marshall
10-Zurhaar
11-Ryan
12-Ainsworth
13-Battle
14-Graham
15-Bowes
16-Bolton
17-Parfitt
18-Darcy
19-SPP
20-Clarke

Ill max out at a top 20 for now.
Solid draft this. I was a big fan of Ridley's in his draft year. Retraining as a wingman in the VFL. Expect him on this list eventually.

PLenty more quality kids.
Simpkin has to make the top 20 - his best has been better than McGrath this year. Florent, Witherden, Fisher, Larkey all stiff.

Well you went ahead and named a few that aren’t not better. Clearly McGrath is no where near the level of bont, macrae, dunkley and naughton has so much scope as key position because they are so hard to find. At the same time McGrath is being played out of the position for the necessity of the team, if he was allowed to float through half back and be a distributor he would be having a much better season. His defensive qualities are elite as well, bathed Eddie betts in his first season of afl unlike Caleb Daniel who can often get exposed in the d50

I'd take McGrath over bailey smith and Caleb Daniel every single time and as of right now he is a better Player then Naughton, although Naughton has a huge scope (one that i don't think he will ever reach IMO), people are getting carried away now and going overboard with this, McGrath is still a very good young player, Not the best in the draft sure but he'd still be going top 5.
Daniels had a way better year, but McGrath could possibly be better in the future. I would put my house on bailey smith and Naughton being better players in the future, both have been just as good this year and Naughton probably better. Smith had no pre season and has been super this year. The kids gonna be a midfield beast as long as his body holds up

I find McGrath hard to gauge. He might go on to become an AA level player, or he’ll just develop into a decent complimentary mid in the Tim Notting mould.

I’d definitely take Bailey Smith over him though.

The fact he’s writing off Smith as ever reaching McGrath’s level is just peak Bigfooty. Particularly when Smith has done an unreal job considering he’s not even turning 19 until late December and the fact that he had an injury interrupted pre season.
A mid that has power, speed and can kick goals are worth their weight in gold. And they are already putting up very similar numbers.

You going off on this tangent about someone writing off Smith when nobody has done anything of the sort is peak Bigfooty my friend.

He's hard to gauge for us Bombers supporters too, we still haven't seen him playing his best position yet.

Everyone had written off Darcy Parish as a bust until 8 weeks ago, he gets the freedom to play his natural position and we are now seeing what he is capable of, can see the same thing happening to Andy.

Ah there it is. Blokes a Brisbane supporter. Let's not get caught up in one of these "bombers supporters overrate their players" type deals

I can't be bothered arguing because it is purely subjective. But you can agree with me that Jade's statement was ridiculous and incredibly one eyed. By all means, McGrath may evolve into an A grader but right now he looks like he'll develop into a pretty good player, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Oh gosh, that sounds terrible... what did Jade say?

1-Taranto
2-Clug
3-McGrath
4-Stewart
5-English
6-SPS
7-Berry
8-Setterfield
9-Marshall
10-Zurhaar

After watching Setterfield this year coming back of his knee last year, I reckon he'll be in the top 10 conversation by the end of the year.

Finally got one of my predictions right!

reckon Marshall pretty hard done by there. I'd have him over English 100 times out 100

Ive long rated Setterfield. Was a bit worried the injuries could mount up and make things hard for him. But looks to be ok.
Perhaps that ex-hawk medico you guys have should be made available AFL wide, so we can prevent guns going down to mismanaged injury

nah.
I did hold off to watch tonight thinking i'd missed something in Simpkin. Im not seeing that assessment
Good call on Witherden. I took him out to place him back in when i was done, and forgot. Will add back in
Lewis is another 1 that could crack the top 20
agreed. He is building a nice game. Once he has the tank for 4 quarters, he'll be a serious forward. Strong hands, good positioning.
Not far off the top 20.

Wot Bailey Smith has best player in the comp potential. He has all the tricks and is very very good

How is Parfitt in the that list and Zac Fisher isn't ?
Geez Louise. Also Zurhaar deserves to be top 5 on 2019 form, being a real bolter this season.

Simpkins best is better than McGrath’s but you need to wait and watch 1 game to see if he is top 20? There is a big chance he will be the better player and your number 1 pick slides down the pecking order.

perhaps, but Simpkin at the moment hasn't popped out in any of the games ive watched. And while i inevitably watch McGrath more, i still watch Simpkin a bit (i have in a UF keeper league, so there is some investment)

To date and with the upside i predict (which is worth nothing in real life), i have McGrath ahead.
not sure the chance is big. There's a chance sure. He was rated and felt he could have gone top 5-8 at the time. But i wouldnt say it's big like you would bank your house on it.

The one game was to see if i had missed something throughout the year.
