Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

Simpkins best is better than McGrath’s but you need to wait and watch 1 game to see if he is top 20? There is a big chance he will be the better player and your number 1 pick slides down the pecking order.

Bit of a stretch here. Not hard for Simpkin to stand out given North’s midfield drops off a cliff after Cunnington and Higgins. I expect that if McGrath was given the same midfield minutes as Simpkin he’d be putting up some very impressive numbers.

Wot Bailey Smith has best player in the comp potential. He has all the tricks and is very very good
All came about because 1 poster said he thinks Andy is an average footballer so the twit stupidly attacked who he supported by saying a stupid statement.

Lol what?? Lucky for Taranto he only has Kelly and Cogs and lucky for McCluggage aa he only Zorko and Neale to compete with for midfield minutes....

What a bizarre post. If McGrath could be the best player on the ground as a midfielder - he’s playing in the midfield. The all powerful ess midfield ain’t going keep him out.

nah.
I did hold off to watch tonight thinking i'd missed something in Simpkin. Im not seeing that assessment
Good call on Witherden. I took him out to place him back in when i was done, and forgot. Will add back in

agreed. He is building a nice game. Once he has the tank for 4 quarters, he'll be a serious forward. Strong hands, good positioning.
Not far off the top 20.
Hope you watched today’s game. You have McGrath in the top 3.

He was horrible today. At least Simpkin laid 6 tackles - McGrath just 1.

Bills obsession with all things Essendon is the gift that keeps on giving. I would argue about players for his club but I really could not give a single f*** about anyone at that club

Bombers went with the safe option and their fans kick up a stink when you mention it. There’s nothing wrong with going the safe option, especially at a time when the club clearly needed immediate results and hope.

With the emergence of Saad and McKenna I’m not sure they need a 3rd running half back. I’d imagine they’d select Taranto, Mccluggage or bid on Setterfield if they had their time again.

To be fair most teams go the safe option with pick 1 which is one reason pick 1 is rarely the best player. Walsh while being a super player was the safe option. A good chance the best from that draft will be from the likes of Rozee Rankine Lukosius etc

From the Bulldogs, I’d take Bontempelli, Daniel, Naughton, Smith, Libba, Macrae, Hunter, English and Johannisen ahead of McGrath.

All are better players currently or will become better players. You could make a case for a few others as well. Suggesting Bont and Macrae are the only two more valuable than McGrath from the Bulldogs is absolutely laughable.

McGrath may not be the best player but he's also being seriously underrated in this thread. A few of those Dogs players were spudding it up big time V Lions

You’d want to use more than one game as a sample size to judge a player.

That is just hypothetical conjecture based on no basis whatsoever. The consensus around the traps is that Walsh's debut season is right up there with the greatest of all time (like Selwood in 2007)

You can bet dollars to donuts Gold Coast would gladly swap both Rankine and Lukosius for Walsh if they could.

Lol - mistake. It’s a re-do thread and I’m taking him in the top 25. Long way to go before it’s a mistake.

I’m tipping Matho gets closer to 25 than McGrath does 1 in this thread. Now that’s a mistake!!

Problem for Matho is that he's competing with the likes of Neale Zorko Lyons Berry Rayner etc and Ely Smith is also coming along nicely.

I like Petrevski-Seton and Fisher but I'd trade them both for McCluggage.

I wouldn't. SPS is rapidly turning into Carlton's most important players, plus he has a massive upside. Not saying he will be as good as McLuggage, but he is more valuable to Carlton and our structure

You'd be crazy not to do that swap. McCluggage is already one of the elite wingmen of the competition and still rapidly improving. He is superstar material.
